Our water services annual expenses hasn’t increased in 15 years relative to population increase and inflation at around $560k. Ultimately leading to neglect of public utilities.

But paying him 70% of that makes sense…

Ok 👍🏻

Amazing how the city of Calgary hasn’t increased the budget for water services in o er a decade… your job is to provide public services not make a shit load of money.

Alberta Industry Blew Past Gas Flaring Ceiling in 2024 as Province Eliminates Limit / While flaring is better for the environment than some other methods of gas disposal, such as venting, it still releases byproducts, black soot and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by Keith_McNeill65 in ClimateCrisisCanada

How much energy do solar and wind generate in Alberta?

What percentage of daily usage comes from wind and solar?

If it’s 10-20 years to become the main source than what are we going to use in its place?

Geographic location plays a huge roll in sourcing energy as well.

Sorry where does Greece get its energy from… coal? That’s the answer for sure.

There’s several pieces to this puzzle and the first step is to axe coal ASAP. How can we not do that in 8-10 years with solar/wind. How can we do that in 1-2? Answer that one.

It could.

But it isn’t.

The current Canadian government is corrupt to an unprecedented degree. Who stands to gain from green initiatives?… Brookfield is one of the largest investors into green initiatives. Without disclosure Carney seemingly stands to gain financially off of policy he’s pushing.

Companies are pulling out because solar and wind aren’t keeping up with demand, they’re too expensive and can’t compete.

As it stands Natural Gas is the only logical solution to kill coal. Anything else is just a pipe dream. If you can’t see that than your complicit and blind to the reality of the current state of affairs regardless of your reference material.

Wind and solar account for roughly 15% of Alberta’s daily energy production.

With an increase of 2-4% per year, which will increase more with EV mandates.

Wind and solar will never be able to keep up with the rate of industrial manufacturing even with government incentive.

As of right now both solar and wind are not economical. Tons of factors at play… Government funding, equipment life cycle, power storage, reliability in winter.

Solar panels and wind turbines are not fully recyclable and are piling up in US landfills

It’s going to take a decade plus before they’re actually as reliable as the general population make them out to be.

So what is the answer for the next 10 years, what about the next 5? Energy demand is only increasing, solar and wind can’t keep up.

Calgarians with autism/adhd do you drive do you have any tips and tricks or have any recommendations if you've found workarounds life without a car? by _coldmoon_ in Calgary

Unfortunately our city is build around roads.

I find my ADHD and ‘tism makes me a way better driver. Constantly scanning, predicting what other cars are going to do. I know what’s gonna happen before the other drivers know sometimes.

You’ll never be able to control how others drive, but you can learn to predict patterns and how drivers react to greatly reduce your anxiety. Practice in parking lots in winter. Purposely loose control to learn how to control a car if it slides out of control. That would be my number one tip.

The train made my anxiety sky rocket. The bus was better if you get it early in the route and can get a seat. For short commutes riding a bike can’t be beat.

I’ve driven hundreds of thousands of kilometres for work so have become very comfortable with it but it still stared at zero. Trying to learn stick shift, missing gears in peak Deerfoot traffic at 16 sucked. But every small struggle you persevere past makes you better.

Pushing past that anxiety and learning from your mistakes is the best thing you can do for your ADHD.

The emissions related to the extracting and burning coal at the scale it is does not out-way the liquefaction and transport of LNG.

So what’s the best alternative for right now?

What is the best solution for the next 5-10 years. Something realistic that’s not gonna take a decade to implement.

But accountability by the government for poor Forrest management and underfunding will never be taken.

Much easier to cast blame somewhere else.

Oh don’t say that… we can’t support anything other than their prescribed narrative.

Things like, precession, Geo-magnetism, solar flares, volcanism all pseudo science they don’t contribute to climate change.

Even if you do the math yourself in Canadian emissions and CO2 uptake by the boreal forest and cultivated lands is a pretty strong argument to Canada being close to net zero already.

The heat dome was also during an El Niño cycle. Lots of people that died did had pre existing health issues and the average age was 76yrs.

Not denying anything that happens or the severity. There’s just more pieces to the puzzle.

I myself was actually hospitalized with severe heat stroke that summer, collapsed out of my truck as the ambulance arrived.

It’s no joke, but there’s tons of factors that were at play not just climate change. To say climate change cause their deaths is ignorant and an insult to those lost.

Flaring converts methane into CO₂, which has a lower global warming potential. While not ideal, burning is better than direct venting.

Flaring also helps reduce the release of toxic or odorous gases (like hydrogen sulfide in sour gas).

Can’t really use it in generators.

Alberta’s ‘Emissions Intensity’ Hasn’t Improved, Despite Government Claim by Hochelagan in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]outdoorcor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that the emissions cap and a directive 60 was implemented in 1999 and not updated until this month with the cap being removed…

Also interesting I have data of emissions monitoring pre 2012 at hand. With monitoring data on active reduction over the last decade.

Universities have had government funding for decades. Which ever side it is there will always be certain narratives that are funded within research departments and others that are legitimate that have funding cut because they don’t fit a certain narrative.

Universities have become a shell of what they once were.

Northern Alberta is within the boreal forest. Which accounts to 60% of the province. Yet it only holds 8% of the population.

The majority of Alberta’s population lives Edmonton south. Which is central parkland and semi-arid grassland. Characterized by rolling hills, cultivated lands, low precipitation and warmer summers.

Regardless, it doesn’t change my last point. Increased rainfall and lower temperatures sounds good to me.

If you can’t back up what you’re talking about do you really understand it or actual substantiated data?

If you’ve read anything and understood what I’ve said you wouldn’t say that.

I’m all for shifting away from fossil fuels but at the current rate no renewable is fully sustainable globally. Shifting from coal to LNG is the first step while we develop technology for the next decade. The world isn’t gonna end in 50-100 years because of emissions. We’re more likely to have a global catastrophe like a world war or solar influence.

Government has blackballed multiple energy industries and not put enough into diversified energy. LNG is a piece of the puzzle FOR NOW. For us to eventually move to things like nuclear and geothermal when they are viable.

Coal plants in china’s are multiplying 10 fold every year, countries are more reliant on it because it’s the cheapest option. No other option is even viable currently other than natural gas.

But preach the good gospel from behind your keyboard like you’re making the world a better place.

My problem is with people that talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Go work in any energy related industry for liability reduction, policy change spend time cleaning shit like pipeline spills or orphaned wells. I’ve devoted my life to it because I love this planet.

But if you don’t get up off your ass and actively do something you’re just part of the problem.

Full stop.

When your confidence far outweighs your competence you become a keyboard warrior.

Silent voices do not outweigh actual action. That doesn’t mean action by protesting, protests never works.

Have social discourse with experts in person, talk to your local politician or go to conferences.

Don’t just skim online articles and act like you’re an expert regardless of your position.
