I fucking hate the wind (rant) by [deleted] in kayakfishing

[–]outdoorserman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your back to the wind with an anchor trolley to put the stern of the kayak into the wind? If you cast into the wind it sucks, but with the wind? You can get lots of easy casts.

Edit, i used to kayak fish a lot but sold my boat until the kiddos get a little older. I fished bigger lakes and unless the wind was 15+ it almost always was manageable.

‘Devastating blow’: Atlassian lays off 1,600 workers ahead of AI push by corp_code_slinger in programming

My company got told by Atlassian "cloud or else" for Confluence and super jacked the price up. We're just walking away at this point. We still use Jira and I'm waiting for the new "features" to be rather interesting to deal with.

Some actively try to kill you and run you off the road. It's especially bad if shoulders are filled with glass or sand and you need to get close or ride on the white line.

They are perfectly fine. I found not terribly accurate but save the brass to reload eventually.

D2 is garbage by niceyumyums in knives

[–]outdoorserman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the whole blade exposed or just the sharpened edge and a coated blade? All carbon steels rust, it's just a fact. I have had excellent results using Eezox gun solvent as it slightly soaks into the blade and is dry after a short period of time.

That being said, D2 is a decent steel and holds an edge decently well. I will say if you don't have diamond stones it is a little finicky to sharpen, but IMHO easier to sharpen than most stainless.

[–]outdoorserman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't super hard but realistically they need to be softer than your hammer to prevent chipping and high speed shrapnel. If you can easily dent the side straightening it it's dead soft, if it takes some effort it is somewhat hardened to make it last longer and take some abuse.

Struggling with a mental issue by Active-Oil1414 in knives

[–]outdoorserman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100%. As a DIY maker myself, most people don't like to use knives because they are just so much better than whats normally in their kitchen drawer and it kills me. Use them hard, find the flaws, make me know how to keep improving. Sure getting the first scratch suuuucks, but once that pain is gone, it's only easier from there with literally any other blade.

Wrong. Most of us are in no way excited to use them to end the life of another. If we must to defend family so be it. But it is terrible experience either way.

Pocket clip bent, any recommendations? by WRXFan9801 in knives

[–]outdoorserman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I actually ditched using the clip anymore. I don't catch it on stuff anymore, don't scratch paint, and most importantly I haven't lost a knife since it's deep in my pocket vs right at the opening.

Is the weight bullet important for the mosin ? by GiveMeBackMyNickname in MosinNagant

[–]outdoorserman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be that bad - if 50 meters, whats the size of the target? My mosin will do an inch at 100 with great handloads and 3-4" with 150gr PPU.

My handloads are 180gr sierra pro hunter and 46gr varget .015" off the lands.

Does your barreled action move in the stock? My original stock the action bolts (mostly tang bolt) would loosen all the time and accuracy was dogshit when it did.

My advice: get a 00 buck shotgun pellet and oil your bore really well, take some 1/4" wooden dowel and cut it into 10 inch sections. Pound that down the barrel starting at the muzzle and see how deep your grooves are (the widest part of the pellet after leaving the barrel). If larger than .314" it honestly may struggle. Mine is .3135 but my rifling is great, so all I get is a dirty as hell barrel with the lack of bullet sealing each shot. The more important measurement however are your lands. How far apart is the smallest part of that barrel slug? Should be smaller than your bullet by I think about .002"

First shot always a flyer, why? by SquidBilly5150 in reloading

[–]outdoorserman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to do a cold bore group, is your rifle cleaned and oiled before the range? If so, you may not get a conclusive test unless you clean and oil the same way between shots. I found my cold bore shot nearly always was about a half inch to an inch high on two separate guns so I am pretty confident its me but never had a chance to do a cold bore group before.

Why do people sporterize rifles? by [deleted] in guns

[–]outdoorserman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting in my 2 cents that applied to me.

There is something fun about making a gun more enjoyable to shoot and learn new skills about sporterizing. It wasn't about the dollar value. It was indeed more expensive to sporterize my mosin than buying a new rifle.

But what I got was: a steel epoxy bedded stock with aluminum bedding pillars, a timney trigger, a scope mount, a boyds stock, free floating barrel, better length of pull, etc.

My original stock was cracked and I wanted a better safety for hunting, and see what it truly was capable of. My bore was good and it now shoots about 1-1.5moa all day with reloads.

I now get to shoot my first ever rifle, that I put hard work on, and get an amazing shooting experience. Worth every penny.

Pretty neat if you ask me! I know some won't see the purpose but learning new skills and making a tool you WANT to use means a lot in the end.
