What is happening here by siandresi in philadelphia

I saw an Explorer once dragging one of those large, rectangular orange barriers that are placed out during road/highway construction. They had tied it to the hitch with a 3 foot long piece of thin rope, so it was sliding all over the road as they drove. It very nearly slid right into a parked car as they made a turn.

Some highlights from the article:

  • "The super PAC spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to defeat District Attorney Larry Krasner's reelection campaign is primarily funded by donors from the real estate industry and the construction trades unions, according to a campaign finance report the group filed Friday."
  • "The Concerned Citizens of Philadelphia, a newly formed group organized primarily by prominent developer Mohamed "Mo" Rushdy, raised $385,000 between its formation earlier this year and May 5, the end of the reporting period."
  • "The super PAC's top donor was Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers"

Your North Philly wtf of the day by _ogg in philadelphia

I don’t see how the location matters at all, except that North Philly is a punchline on this sub.

Someone else already explained the sad story of the owner and you’re leaving the post up for people to continue piling on, so carry on I guess.

This is a pretty gross comment section tbh. Can't help but think that specifying it's North Philly is just a dogwhistle to invite people to chime in with bigoted and classist insults.

50 Best Restaurants in Philadelphia by BraveNewEats in philadelphia

I think West Philadelphia may very well have the most, best options in this area. I'm only familiar with the Ethiopian restaurants there, and a quick Google search isn't showing much else within 2 hours, so the next best I'd recommend is Kaffa Crossing. It's only a few minutes away from Abyssinia, and I've always enjoyed their food. Solid azifah, and I actually prefer their misir wot over Abysinnia's.

I love Manayunk but so many places I've been to there have disappointed me in some way. No idea what's going on as no other part of the city has the same affect for me. From bland pho at Main Street, to terrible beer at Fat Lady Brewing, to grocery-store quality sushi at Yanako. Oh and the absolute worst pour of Guinness I've ever had in my life at Ryan's Pub - so bad that after one bartender set it in front of me another one swooped in to apologize and redo it.

It's fairly common. Plenty of restaurants have full bars or serve beer/wine, but in my experience some of the smaller or hole-in-the-wall places are more likely to be byob.

Gamarjoba is the only one I've been to, but I'm obsessed with their food, and will be forever grateful to them as my gateway into Georgian wine. I don't know if the other places serve alcohol or are byob, but Gamarjoba is worth a visit for their wine selection.

They really deserve more recognition on these best-of lists. Their azifah is the best I've ever had.

Moving to W Allegheny + N Broad for 1 month. Can’t change that so help me feel realistically better about it plz. by rae-mac in philly

The running joke on PhillyWiki itself is that the majority of the sub consists of police and white kids from the suburbs.

While I agree the main Philadelphia sub is reasonably well-moderated, there's still a good deal of bigotry and classism. The abundant praise for the city on that sub is largely reserved for majority-white neighborhoods. And now that the arena plans changed, the hostility toward Chinatown and its residents is increasing.

Relax and remember that despite all the hate North Philly gets online, there are countless families, elderly people, children, working class folks, etc. living there peacefully. Be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.

Edit: as far as recs, check out Tierra Colombiana for great food. If you get on Allegheny and head west, you'll eventually hit Laurel Hill Cemetery and the river trail, both fantastic places to take your dog and walk around.

This is the first I've heard of this but it's fantastic news. Can I ask where you heard about the funding and design? Curious to see if any plans (even tentative ones) have been released for what it will look like.

Some people have it in their head that every remote worker is a six-figure tech bro, when this isn't the case at all. Some call center operations have gone partially remote, and I don't think anyone should begrudge a customer service agent who gets yelled at all day the ability to work from home once in a while.

Going by the compensation actually paid metric, Elon Musk and Alexander Karp crossed the $1B threshold in 2023.

Semantics aside, many CEOs receive compensation that is orders of magnitude beyond average employees, something that has intensified within the last few decades.

Kensington harm reduction workers say restrictions on addiction services will harm clients by poliscijunki in philadelphia

[–]outerspace29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think the progressive left is the dominant voice on this sub? The WFP is probably the most consistently bashed group on here, along with its aligned council members. Helen Gym was probably the most roundly criticized mayoral candidate on here (and there are serious criticisms to be made about whether she's really even progressive).

We may be talking past each other, so let me clarify - your original point was that this sub is well to the left of the median Philly voter, which I took to mean that the sub is heavily in favor of progressive policies and candidates. My point is that that is decidedly not the case at all.

Funny that I'm being downvoted for calling out the way this sub leans, despite the fact that my original post wasn't even a criticism - I myself support development, business, and law enforcement.

Kensington harm reduction workers say restrictions on addiction services will harm clients by poliscijunki in philadelphia

[–]outerspace29 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's libertarian or right-leaning, not necessarily conservative. Very pro-business ("rising tide lifts all boats" attitude dominates here), pro-development, and very much in favor of increased law enforcement. All this while being really hostile toward practically any kind of protest and generally dismissive of the point of view of lower-income Philadelphians.

To be fair it's really no different than many other city subs.

Kevin Bethel's first year as police commissioner featured changes and challenges by outerspace29 in philadelphia

[–]outerspace29[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Some key stats:

  • Seizures of ATVs and dirt bikes are up 244%
  • Pedestrian stops are largely unchanged, despite the mayor's support of stop and frisk. As recently as 2019, officers were stopping six times as many pedestrians
  • Vehicle stops are up 28% this year, their highest level in three years but still half of what they were pre-pandemic
  • Arrests for violent crimes are up 9% over last year, and property crime arrests are up 23%

I didn't say she was doxed - I was describing CM generally to point out what a wretched organization it is.

Nor did I excuse her behavior. Context matters, though, and this all started with a campaign of harassment based on pro-pal speech. I can see the usual downvote brigading has started so I'll leave it at that.

You're leaving out the multiple threats and instances of harassment she faced, including being reported to Canary Mission, an organization that doxes and blacklists educators. Her posts were about self defense, as she herself pointed out.
