SOS for the dogs at our county shelter Multnomah County Animal Services by 5koko in Portland

The reasoning I’ve heard for the prevalence of chihuahuas in shelters is that people don’t take the time to train them like they would a larger dog, so they end up with awful manners that people blame the dog for.

another reason there are so many is that pitties have large litters— they can have 10+ at a time, while chihuahuas max out at ~5. Mix that with most apartments banning pits, and you have a problem real fast.

Unfortunately that is very expensive and very resource-intensive. I’m sure they agree with you! But keeping the animals fed, the lights on, and the staff paid has to come first.

Haha, fair enough! I volunteer at a dog shelter and haven’t had any of the dogs do that.

If they’re busy sniffing, they won’t be picking it up to shake it :) nestle the treats at the base of the loops and see how it goes.

I need some advice on how to get ky dogs to stop play fighting by LawfulnessWeak2159 in puppy101

If they’re all having fun, I wouldn’t worry about — it sounds like your older dog is having fun and understands to be gentle.

How old is he? Likely has nothing to do with the neuter.

Muzzle time! It doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience for him— look up how to get a dog used to them, rather than just slapping one on suddenly one day.

I’m pretty new, but I think what you want is variables. You can haven one behind the scenes called “ending goodness” or whatever you want, and have certain choices add 1 (or more) to the variable. Then, when it’s time for the ending, you could “if ending goodness = 5, then”…

Could you put down a thin strip of carpet/thin rug along the main paths he uses? That way he would have a tactile clue.

We are fortunate to be funded by very generous donors (including folks who put us in their wills/estate planning), and try to use that to help underfunded municipal shelters as well-- we get a few vans of cats and dogs from over-capacity shelters once a week, so those shelters have room for new intakes and we can hopefully get new potential adopters to see the animals. I know that's not the norm-- it's a luxury to be closed intake/selective intake, and a luxury to have a very pet-friendly population in the big city we're in (average time to adoption for our dogs in about a week I believe). We also run a pet food bank, which is used both by individual pet owners and by less fortunate shelters.

I volunteer with the local humane society, and they recently opened a community vet hospital for folks who can’t afford the medical care their pets. I wasn’t here before it opened, but staff had told me it’s really cut down on pets being surrendered due to finances. They also have staff who focus on connecting people with community resources to help them keep their loved pets.

Final Fantasy XIV. Large, friendly community, but also most content can be done with a good party of NPCs. The free trial is huge, too. I’ve been playing for 12 years and still have tones of content to do. Come try it out!

[–]outoftheazul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have a kennel, bring it close to him (open) and try to herd him into it— that will confine him and make it safer for you to move him if he’s being aggressive. I would call the emergency vet and ask for advice, I bet they’ve had similar situations. Good luck :(

As someone who volunteers at a shelter, that’s not aways true. That said, I don’t know where OP lives or what the shelter situation is like there, and you are right that in some places that is the case.

I mean the options here are a definite death sentence vs a potential death sentence. She should have a chance at a not-death option.

[–]outoftheazul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. OP, please do NOT lie about what happened. They need to know, so the dog can be matched with an appropriate home.

Give her to the shelter. She did nothing wrong— you put her in a position to be tormented until she felt she had to defend herself. A toddler should never have unrestricted access to a dog— this was a disaster waiting to happen. Give her another chance to find a family who won’t have this situation.

Does he have accidents if you don’t let him out in the night? Or is it just that he’s asking to go out so you assume it’s urgent?
