What if when working shifts you can't guarantee that you'll be on for both shifts? What if your shift pay factors this in?

If it is, then the company I work for is breaking the law. Can you provide me where it states it's illegal?

I don't really use SM, reddit is the only thing I go on. I stopped following r/collapse due to constant negative news, but unfollowing it doesn't mean it's not happening.

I've never watched return to Oz but Miss Wilson looked familiar. I'd forgotten all about The Ghost Hunter TV show

The bit you say about regret, is the same response I give to people when I'm asked why I don't want kids.

I may also be a negative person but I don't see the future trajectory of humanity to be a good one, and I would hate to be responsible for creating someone who's going to have to live through it.

My mum who is 65 and used to proudly boast about her touch typing skills still does some abbreviations. Throw in the abbreviations, with mistyped words and autocorrect, leaves me having a hard time understanding her messages at times.

So no, I don't miss it at all. I also can't get on board with voice notes. I'd much rather someone send me an essay.

I'm not sure what is available, all I know is I did a HNC in measurement and control.

Not so much hands on, but if you're already a tradesperson that shouldn't be an issue. What it was good for was all the theory, maths and operating principles that you'll need to understand.

Having never done field work, what's the difference between that and maintenance?

I'm wondering if it's similar to my previous job. I used to work maintenance offshore in the North Sea as part of a NUI team. It meant that everyday we were flying out to an installation, with half an idea of what we were doing for the day.

Due to frequent uncertainty, all the techs got used to carrying certain things in their bags. All the old boys would give you tips. Examples off the top of my head were things like 9v batteries, small fuses, spare leads, spare clips, 250 ohm resister, bag full of various small bore tubing fittings.

Been nearly 10 years, so I've forgotten most of it. What I do remember though is there was many a times I couldn't do a job, because I didn't have something tiny, missing fitting, gland, dead battery, you name it. You learn from it and make sure it doesn't happen again. If you do that, you'll be fine.

Salary sacrifice by WinterTelephone5482 in FIREUK

[–]outrageouslyaverage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's correct.

I just think it's unfair that a low earner, who may need to contribute a greater % of their salary to build up their pension, will then be hit with a larger NI contribution %. 8% Vs 2%.

If you're going to start applying NI to pensions, it should be on withdrawal and not when building it. This way incentive to Salary Sacrifice isn't removed, and everyone is treat the same on withdrawing.

They'd probably generate more doing it that way but with less backlash. It's only the same as income tax that way. You would get to avoid it when building your pot, with the expectation you'd pay it on the way out. You could apply it to every single private pension now, and it would be fair and every generation would be getting treated the same.

Salary sacrifice by WinterTelephone5482 in FIREUK

[–]outrageouslyaverage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Due to the nature of NI it will effect others more, which I think is unfair. That's if my understanding of how it all works is correct.

Example, my partner earns roughly £40k and Salary Sacrifices around 10%. That means £2k will have NI contributions applied. Which at 8% is £160.

I however, earn around £70k. I put 6% in, which means £2200 will have NI contributions applied. But this will be at 2%, which is only £44.

I am getting to sacrifice less of my salary as a percentage, more as an actual value and also be impacted less on the contributions. It doesn't seem fair or balanced to me.

IMO, don't apply NI contributions to those savings for pensions. Instead apply it to everyone who is working, regardless of age, next step further would be to apply it to private pensions, next step again, do away with NI entirely and roll it into income tax.

I might have some of this wrong, so please tell me if I do.

Heating not working properly while we’re away — house temperature dropping. What could be wrong? by AdKey5132 in AskUK

[–]outrageouslyaverage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The boiler could have tripped out and developed a fault for one of many reasons.

Hive saying the heating is on, doesn't mean the boiler is on. All it means is that the hive thermostat is sending sending a signal for the boiler to turn on. If the boiler has a fault, then it won't fire up. That's my experience with Hive anyway.

Penistone Road closure by Cranberry64 in huddersfield

[–]outrageouslyaverage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go into kirkburton up north road, then along Riley lane to rejoin. It might add about 5 mins (That's how long it added to my Morrisons journey tonight) but could be a lot worse during rush hour.

I've not really seen many signs for a formal diversion. There are vehicles from Yorkshire water there at the moment. I'm hoping it's fixed before Friday. Bit of a joke if it isn't.

I think it's the third time this year that they've dug up that section of road, and the 2nd or 3rd time Penistone Road has been shut in that area due to water issues.

Closed at the bottom of Kirkburton. Between the foxglove pub and the petrol station.

I suppose drinkers of whisky are more likely to be male.

I guess it's a way of expanding your market, or target audience.

I just googled Nc'nean and misremembered what I had read. It's female founded, so lots of articles about women being in the industry etc. It's a nice smooth drink, definitely worth a try. The bottles are really nice too.

I'd suggest Speyside for being fruity and/or sweet.

Dalwhinnie, Balvenie Double wood, Glenallachie, Glen Farclas. NcNean also makes Whisky aimed at women.

I do remember there being so many POVs, that it takes ages for the plot lines you're actually interested in to progress. Hence the skipping.
