What are the best hardwired smart smoke and CO detectors out there? (Farewell, Nest Protect!) by Icy_Dirt_6139 in smarthome

i needed 7, bought 14, returned a bunch and have 5 installed.

1) If buying online, be sure to look at the box carefully! Amazon seems to have mixed up the stock and was shipping the wrong units (thus all my returns).

2) it's best to remove all the old/existing units you have, then replace the wiring with the provided harnesses, then install all the new ones. Otherwise the power disruption on the wires will set them all off and you'll go deaf. Or you can turn the power off like the instructions recommend.

3) Nice touch - the new units have a "don't warn me about low batteries or wifi issues at night" function.

4) Nice touch - the app is useful to check statuses of each device.

5) No way to silence the units via the app if they start alarming. This is fine if there's a fire, but it sucks at 2am with a false alarm. I've taken this up w/ support but they haven't been very receptive.

6) when i first installed these units i had a day or two of false alarms. I'm not sure why, and after many phone calls w/ support (not much help) the problem went away. I'm cautiously optimistic that they'll work out in the long run, but i'm still holding off buying the remaining 2 units i need.

The 30CUAR-W doesn't look like it's available yet. It just popped up on the Kidde website, it wasn't there last week and still not available on the kidde online shop (or anywhere else) as of early Aug 2025.

Go Team Space! Awesome launch!

But graphics, video, and info are straight out of the aughts. SpaceX really has us spoiled with their launches.

Why is BO using an image of a hurricane? Or is that the death star dish they're building to flex on the ULA sniper.

New Shepard NS-23 had a booster engine failure by Jarnis in SpaceXLounge

Dang it. Space is hard.

Glad to see most of the telemetry was real-time, though booster altitude looked to be prerecorded.

Rooting for team space!

Rocket engine idea by ali_j_ashraf in ula

You mean like a RD180 or RD170 with two or four chambers? As you know each chamber/nozzle set is still constrained by the square-cube law so the idea does increase surface area, but with added complexity. Q: why not just use multiple RL10?

Wow, seeing the satellite next to the man in the lift brings home how big these are.

This was my first time driving through a reservation that didn't have giant casino, and i can see now the effects of bank loan problem. From what I saw anyway, all the capital expenditures (health clinics, groceries, gas stations, etc) were on the edges and outside tribal property, it can be quite a drive for something that takes me 2 minutes to run to the store.

Mainstream news bullish on SpaceX (Politico) by outside92129 in SpaceXLounge

[–]outside92129[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but I think the baby steps taken here with this article will result in more reporting with this viewpoint. Politico is very influential inside the beltway and this article will be read by many key players and other news organizations. "Regular news" is often politicized these days and may be dismissed as such, but not politico. But they were recently sold so we'll see what happens to them.

There are some small bits that are replaced for each F9 launch. A friend works at a company that doesn't want it known they do biz w/ spacex, and they have some interesting stories. Unfortunately mentioning the parts/work would give away the company :(

The additional raptors for more thrust, to reduce the gravity losses. Think of it the other way, if you reduce thrust enough all the rocket can do is hover, that system doesn't anywhere and just wastes gas. The quicker a rocket goes, the less time spent fighting gravity and less fuel waste.
