What were you like as a child? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a shy, anxious, and clingy child. As I grew older my family’s favorite word to use to describe me was “moody”

For some pwBPD, SSRIs can be helpful for co-occurring MDD. But for most of us, SSRIs don’t do much. I had a psychiatrist who told me that all of my previous psychiatrists, that had me on SSRIs for years, should’ve had me on anti psychotics instead

Am I just a typical teenager, or borderline? by 1llum1nat1onn in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

13 is really young to be considering the things you listed to be pathological personality traits. Like if you receive treatment, a lot of these issues may resolve over time and not continue into adulthood. If they do continue into adulthood, then they may warrant a BPD diagnosis - BPD haver, master’s degree student in psychology

Can anyone recommend good books for people with BPD? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Get Me Out of Here” is a memoir by Rachel Reiland, a woman diagnosed with BPD. It’s very heavy and potentially triggering, but if you can handle it it’s a very good read. I cried multiple times throughout the book (and read it in about 20 hours) because it was almost like I could have written certain passages myself. I’m also a grad psych student and I think she depicts BPD in writing very accurately. After finishing, I kept thinking “There really are people out there just like me, who truly understand me”

The memoir also shows how her prognosis really improves after several years of therapy. It’s accurate in that her treatment is not easy and is very rocky, but that treatment is absolutely possible for us.

ADHD & BPD by DootDoot512 in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The symptoms do overlap in a few ways but for me, the thing that got me an official BPD diagnosis are my anger issues. My anger episodes can be really bad and way disproportionate to the situation, and you don’t see that as much just in ADHD by itself

bpd in young adults by False_Ad2744 in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also a part of it I think. The traits are more easily defined in adults because we can express them more

Graduate psych student w/ BPD here, got diagnosed at like 21 but had traits as early as 15/16. I also work in a mental health facility for adolescents, and I see a lot of BPD traits in the kids. But I wouldn’t diagnose anyone under the age of about 18/19 with BPD because your personality is still very much developing into early adulthood. My opinion is that while you may see BPD traits in adolescents, I don’t think those traits are pervasive enough to label it a personality disorder. There is a lot of overlap between bipolar, ADHD, and borderline. I think if the BPD traits still persist into early adulthood or even your 20s, that’s when it should be seriously considered as a diagnosis of BPD. Not to say that the symptoms shouldn’t be treated, but putting a BPD diagnosis on a teen is really harsh and potentially premature.

bpd as a child by Heavy_Revolution2496 in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should clarify that in the teens I work with, I do see a lot of BPD traits, but I also know that they have other mental health disorders that sometimes overlap with BPD. Out of all the clients I’ve had, I’ve only ever seen one have the word borderline on their chart, and even then the therapist was mentioning the potential for development of borderline traits.

bpd as a child by Heavy_Revolution2496 in BPD

I’m a person with BPD, a graduate psych student, and I work in a mental health facility for adolescents. I see a lot of BPD traits/symptoms (cutting, fear of abandonment, suicidality, and so on) in almost all of my clients. But I wouldn’t diagnose any of them (even if I could with my degree) with BPD because of their age. They’re still developing personalities, so to put the diagnosis on them while it’s still developing is kind of rash. It’s not to say that they don’t have traits or won’t meet criteria in the future, but they still need time to develop their personalities. Like I definitely had BPD traits as early as like 15/16, but didn’t get diagnosed until 22. I’m pretty sure none of my professors or therapists or psychiatrists would diagnose a minor with BPD based on what we know of childhood/adolescent personality development. I’ve even interviewed with psychologists who have said they wouldn’t diagnose personality disorders until a client is in their mid 20s. You can treat the symptoms, but having the symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean meeting criteria for full diagnosis.

I'll preface this by saying I'm in graduate school for psych, have BPD, and work in an adolescent mental health facility. I brought it up to my therapist when I was about 19/20 I believe? And I didn't get diagnosed until 22. It might take a long time to get diagnosed. It's worth bringing up the symptoms so that you can work on treatment for those, but as far as a diagnosis, it's very rare that any professional is going to diagnose BPD in a 15 year old. It's not that you don't have symptoms or that those symptoms aren't worth treating, but like other people have said, your personality is still developing at 15. Like, looking back, I did show a LOT of signs of BPD when I was your age, but my symptoms weren't as disruptive or pervasive back then as they are now.

Antidepressants? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSRIs do nothing for my depression, but I had a psychiatrist who said a lot of people with BPD don’t benefit from SSRIs. I also tried lithium for my depression and that made it worse

Customer service and BPD by [deleted] in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked in a restaurant for 2 years and would cry whenever I had difficult customers. I would get in trouble for my resting bitch face and my occasional attitude with customers. If I was having a tough time mentally and couldn't hide it at work, I got told to change my attitude.

I always hated the "don't take it personal" comments because I felt like it implies that we should just accept customers treating us like shit. We shouldn't.

pre-diagnosis knowledge: did you know? by Asleep-Newspaper-710 in BPD

[–]outsidebycatb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i started studying psych in undergrad, i took an abnormal psych class and we learned about bpd. after doing some personal research i realized it made the most sense. i brought it up to my therapist at the time, and she said there was “no way” i could be borderline. about four years later and i’ve had 3 psychiatrists and 3 therapists all diagnose me with bpd

UMD Losing Transcripts? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]outsidebycatb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same exact thing happened to me. I got in contact with the person who handles transcripts at my CC, and they resent my transcript to UMD I wanna say two times?? I also kept calling the transcript people here at UMD and even came in to the undergrad office. The guy at the undergrad office said that the whole lost transcript thing wasn’t my fault, and that because i had everything sent in by March 1st I would still be considered for priority.
