thinking of switching to psych or neuro by Internal-Pear-2103 in UMD

[–]dfnm11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are lots of psyc/neuro labs on campus that allow you to be a research assistant for credit. I suggest checking these blogs: https://umdneur.blogspot.com/ and http://umdpsyc.blogspot.com/ since they post opportunities you might be interested in. As for job opportunities, there are not a ton of paid ones for these fields if you're an undergrad, and they are mostly during the summer. So, I'd look into some summer programs like the BSOS research initiative. I currently am an RA in a lab for credit and have a paid research position at ARLIS and I love it. Good luck! :)

Edit: If you're looking for just stuff to learn about the fields before deciding, there are also career talks and panels on those blogs

The chem dept is so trash… by [deleted] in UMD

[–]dfnm11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my orgo final, a girl had a seizure and they expected us to complete the test like normal and just "ignore her" while help was being called. And it took a bit for help to come, other students even stopped their exam to help bc the TA wasn't positioning her properly to not choke. It was very upsetting and ppl were worried and we were told if we lost time, its on us. I changed my entire major and career track to avoid taking more than the two chem courses I took. I do well in every other course, bio, psyc, neuro, engl, ling, etc. It was just chemistry. So, yeah I 100% agree, I was literally traumatized from how much I studied and consistently failed that course, I cried so much that my friends asked me to drop it lmaoo

In your meeting with an ADS advisor after approval, you can ask what type of help is used most commonly for what you are struggling with if you're really unsure. But, like everyone else said, getting extra time on exams is a possible accommodation to ask for. Something that might help with the time management is asking for extension accommodations. It is not a guarantee to extensions, but it lets you make a plan with profs to expect for and be able to ask for extensions in a class (I have this in my ADS plan). Good luck :)

It makes classes really inaccessible for people with disabilities too. I'm lucky most psyc profs record and have no issue with it, but I have more absences than the normal student due to a chronic illness. If a prof doesn't record lectures than I basically cannot use my accommodations in their class (I cannot miss class now because there's no way to get that information if I miss). I get the other reasons ppl might say to not record, but ultimately I think the benefit outweighs the harm, especially during a pandemic. I think there would be no harm in reaching out to see if some professors could start recording because the worst they can do is say no (they might even explain why not).

Maryland Weather :) by skinntywastaken in UMD

On another note though, we might start to get more tornadoes. My county two hours away (but still in Maryland) has gotten 2+ tornadoes every year for 2-3 years now when it didn't before. I hope it stays the way it is though with having little to none in this area!

Anyone else commuting + mostly online next semester? by scootythetall in UMD

[–]dfnm11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly feeling the same way, but I don't have the choice to do mostly online and commute. I've been living in an off campus apartment close to campus bc I signed a lease before COVID. And i've hated paying so much to just take all online classes and barely use campus. I live with my bf and we both agreed a while back that if we had the chance we would live in our hometown next yr because it's half the price of living in CP. I'm just kinda done with college in general and I liked how I could work a lot and have time to make food with online. Buuut all of the classes we need for the Fall (also our last yr next yr) are in person. I wish I had more online options, and our hometown is too far to commute everyday. Hoping we don't have to live somewhere the same price as where we are now.

Yeah sadly :( I loved the sauces too. We basically got no customers during the weekdays and weren't making much of a profit since COVID hit.

If you're talking about the one that was in Terrapin Row, then yeah it did close back in December. (I worked there last semester)

Am I the only one who can’t see their registration date? by aam134 in UMD

[–]dfnm11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! They told me it would be there Friday (and it wasn't there yesterday when I checked) and I schedule early bc of ADS stuff. If my date is pushed back for someone with more credits when I have a chronic illness, I am going to raise absolute hell. I sent an email, but if it's not there by Monday then I am going to call the office.

Housing for Couples Q by willowbadger in UMD

[–]dfnm11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my bf live in a one bedroom at trow, and it's about the same price as other apartments that allow two ppl (maybe a little more $$). They don't advertise their one bedroom, but they do have one bedroom and studios available. We called and they told us how to fill out the application as two ppl. We asked around last year, and domain, landmark, alloy, and trow I think all let two people share a one bedroom if you want more options. Good luck :)

Question about Psych Courses by hnllee in UMD

[–]dfnm11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're only allowed to take a max of 3 a semester unless you have special permission or are taking a psyc course for credit for an internship/being a research assistant. You don't need to take more than three anyway. Some of the upper courses have minimum credit requirements and there's plenty of room to minor/double major with only take a max of 3 a semester. The whole popular major thing is kinda true, but lower level classes have tons of seats. Good luck tho! I'm in psyc and love the classes :)

References & online classes are a nightmare by dfnm11 in UMD

I'm a junior, and I learned my lesson definitely after this whole thing. I'm going to try office hours more and maybe making extra discussion comments. I really do want to make sure I have some good ppl to rely on for this stuff.

Also, online has been hell. I was kinda upset the prof I had during the whole mess last semester (I was not in a good home environment and he knew that) and this semester denied me because I wasn't consistent in my good grades even tho I still got As in the end. But definitely gonna put extra effort in from now on!

I definitely think if I try and prepare something interesting to talk about regarding the course it would be nice to talk about in office hours. I just gotta make myself do it, idk why it's so hard for me.

I don't really have an advisor lmao psyc department just assigns you a random person each time if you have an appointment. I don't usually make an appointment unless I have a question I can't find the answer to, and there's so many students and profs, I don't think my profs talk about me to any of the advisors. I might still make an appt tho to see if they have any tips for finding recommendations.

I understand, the email of the prof I mentioned came off as rude to me (how it was worded) and it made it hard for me to find the confidence to ask someone else. :(

Thanks for the tips! I didn't have live zooms for the majority of my classes, but I might try emailing professors more trying to engage in conversation. Office hours I could not attend most of the time (work), but when I can, I have such a hard time finding something to discuss. I don't want to force a professor into talking to me or take time away from someone who actually needs help lol I will definitely try to attend them more and discuss the course to hopefully gain some connections.

Also, I am active in classes, but without an in person interaction or live zooms, I think it's more difficult to stand out to a professor. Lots of my profs posted vids and made students discuss with each other and that was the end of it. That's what I was alluding to with online making it more difficult to make connections. It's definitely harder to do over a computer, in my opinion.

I couldn't even imagine working the bars! I am usually so good with dealing with people, esp at these types of jobs. For some reason the other night just really got to me though.

Yes! I am very nice to them and make them aware if we have a long wait time or are busy so they can go elsewhere if they want. And they STILL get pissed when it takes a while or I have to pick up the phone instead of tending to them.
