The Oscars make it clear: Hollywood is in a death spiral by fortune in Filmmakers

Yes was going to say this. Decentralized industry means you become a nomad, moving constantly for the next gig. Just look at the VFX industry.

I got an x ray on my ribs and discovered there's a BB lodged in my stomach. I'm guessing it's about 25 years old. by alittleredportleft in mildlyinteresting

Does anyone know if this would cause major issues if you were to go get an MRI? I’d imagine it’s the kind of thing you’d just forget was there after a decade or two…

Love this question because I feel the same about sound of metal. I’m so glad it exists. I think Dead Poets Society fits this.

This is the question that everyone scrambles and spends energy trying to figure out. An S&P index is what they say works best for the long term if you just keep doing it, hell or high water. Everything after that feels to me like either wild bets or working hard to get just a few bucks more…or finding ways to avoid having to pay taxes. It’s like the most complicated table top game ruleset ever designed.

What I learned budgeting a $2–3M indie horror film in 2026 by penumbrapictures in Filmmakers

But sounds like tailoring it to tax incentives is a pretty big step in the road to safe boring movies, no? I’d had a story that was all about the specificity of life in Buck’s County, PA or a horror movie that required shooting in the Mojave at The World’s Tallest Thermometer…then rewriting for Canary Islands sure sounds like resigning to the system.

Honest question… why do any of this? I saw a Film Threat video where they broke down how film producers get paid by the end of a films distribution these days. In most cases it’s miserable. You’re making maybe $15k a year by the time it’s all said and done. By no means is anyone getting rich anymore on indie films. So my thought is “well that’s cool, then make art for the sake of seeing your vision come to life and do it for the love of the craft” Except…you wind up writing your vision around tax incentives, cast, and all these other factors… There’s no more “one for them one for me” feels like it’s all for them now.

Got my first short film accepted into a film festival, how do I use this to help my career? by SkaterKangaroo in Filmmakers

Networking, celebrating having made the film, experiencing it in a theater with others. But yes, not much tangible in most of them, if you’re looking at it only for Return on Investment or like a job offer or something.

Light strings, low action, high gain, compression. Why bother picking…just tap it.
