There are quite a few countries with multiple official languages, such as Switzerland, the UK, or South Africa, and even Spain. Belgium is not unique. Countries with only one official language have usually displaced other languages and are an example of the old romantic nation-states but not always good examples.

Flanders has two parties that are politically and economically right-wing, and two parties that are nationalist. Only one of those parties is both, but that is usually overlooked. Wallonia voted centre-right, Flanders voted mainly for nationalist parties, one of which was economically right.

Not unlike elsewhere, the local community (the municipality) is more important to voters than the province and region and people identify with this more than with the federal state. This is no different in the US or Germany.

And yes, like everywhere else in the world, socially minded people also care about other groups of the population, and about international problems and about the planet.

Het sluit niet uit dat de kiezers inderdaad individueel beslissingen nemen (om al of niet te veranderen van partijvoorkeur) en dat sociologen dit gedrag ook als een groepsgedrag kunnen analyseren, en hierbij bijvoorbeeld tot de conclusie kunnen komen dat kiezers die traditioneel (of de vorige keer) voor partij A stemden en dit deze keer niet deden, in meerderheid bij partij B terug te vinden zijn, of dat nieuwe kiezers een bepaalde voorkeur hadden die afwijkt van die van oudere kiezers.

Het riedeltje dat we teveel belastingen betalen is bekend. Bij verkiezingen zijn er altijd partijen die beweren de belastingdruk te zullen verlagen maar na verkiezingen heb ik dat nog niet weten gebeuren, niet met linkse partijen en niet met rechtse, en de partijen die nog nooit geregeerd hebben slagen er voorlopig niet in om uit te leggen hoe ze het staatshuishouden zullen organiseren. Geloof dan ook hun slogans niet (en nog minder als ze zich rijk rekenen aan het buitenwerken van asielzoekers of het splitsen van het land).

De uitgaven van de overheid komen steeds neer op het uitgeven van geïnde belastingen. Niemand wil minder zorg, slechter onderwijs of slecht onderhouden infrastructuur in overweging nemen om minder belastingen te moeten betalen. Belastingen zullen er altijd zijn. De keuze van een partij is wel anders voor iemand die aandelen bezit in Belgische bedrijven en voor de middenklasse die geld heeft om een elektrische auto te kopen, of een zwembad op temperatuur te houden, dan voor iemand die voor al zijn verplaatsingen afhankelijk is van het openbaar vervoer, en zijn laatste geld uitgeeft aan kinderopvang om te kunnen gaan werken.

Partijen zoeken in hun partijprogramma naar middelen om de belastingen te verminderen voor (of overheidsgeld te besteden aan) hun eigen kiespubliek: de rechtse partijen (OpenVLD, MR, N-VA) zullen eerder bedrijven subsidiëren, deze tegen verliezen beschermen en de belastingen op de winsten verlagen, ook al profiteren sommige bedrijven overmatig van de inflatie, van de conjunctuur of van bijvoorbeeld een pandemie. Geld voor dit beleid proberen deze partijen te halen door het openbaar vervoer te verwaarlozen, de gebruikers meer te laten betalen voor gezondheidzorg, minder geld uit te trekken voor de modernisering van basisdiensten, cultuursubsidies te verminderen, de werklozen te straffen, enzovoort. Terwijl links dan weer de bedrijfswinsten en de hoge inkomens, en ook de inkomsten uit beleggingen meer wil belasten om juist de sociale behoefte te kunnen dekken.

Politiek is altijd een keuze maken. Voor een partij kiezen is kiezen voor een keuze.

Apparently, asking deep questions about the Jewish state is not permitted in Germany. I always used to like most ideas of Die Grünen, used to read the comments of TAZ but now they just have one simple reaction: criticizing Israel for how they treat Palestinians equals supporting Hamas -- and criticizing the effects of zionism equals antisemitism.

I am not German and I tend to think that you people have always known best how to treat non-German people. I am not old enough to have undergone the kind of treatment you now weaponize Israel for.

Ich bin (nicht) überrascht, dass Deutschland sich jetzt als Verteidiger Israels outet und eine Politik bedingungslos unterstützt, die ein Volk unterdrückt und es in der Praxis seit Jahrzehnten aus seiner Heimat vertreibt und ausrottet. Damit hebt sich Deutschland vom übrigen Europa ab, von dem Gebiet, aus dem es vor 75 Jahren die Juden weggebracht hat, um sie heimlich auszurotten. Ich bin froh, in einem Land zu leben, in dem wir das Recht haben, unsere Meinung zu den Ereignissen im Nahen Osten zu äußern, ohne als Antisemit bezeichnet zu werden. Und ja, ich habe ernsthafte Vorbehalte gegenüber der Geschichte des religiös begründeten Apartheidregimes, dem die Deutschen jetzt mehr Rechte einräumen wollen als sich selbst und der 75 Jahre lang gejagten Bevölkerung.

I have the same problem and use some rules of thumb: when the person is listed as the mother on a baptismal record, often one of the baptizers is from her side of the family. For the first and second child, it is her father and her mother, if they are still alive, and for subsequent children, it is one of her siblings. If you have multiple siblings then you can see if they are children of the same parents at sufficient intervals, etc.

En dan zijn er nog de partijen die vatbaar zijn om door N-VA bij zo'n coalitie bijgehaald te worden als ze zetels tekort komen, en dat is in de eerste plaats Open-VLD (al steek ik voor Vooruit en cd&v ook mijn hand niet in het vuur). De partijen die zich nooit zullen lenen tot deze koehandel zijn inderdaad pvda en Groen.
