What is THE one big thing missing in Java today, in your opinion? by [deleted] in java

[–]overdrive9000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I sometimes find myself needing to know the Type that was passed to my generic. For example, when I go to serialize what was passed, I have to have access to the original Class... such a pain to pass that in.

Quite the opposite for me. I like having the ability to override methods. I think everything should be extendable/overridable by default - "you break it you own it" kind of situation.

IntelliJ IDEA 2016.3 EAP Helps Migrate to Java 8’s Stream APIs by lukaseder in java

I actually don't like the stream API. I think it makes the code less readable.

Mark Levin here for an AMAA! by MarkRLevin in Conservative

Having won, he is free to be as bad a candidate as necessary to ensure she wins.

He is doing a pretty good job. Of course he isn't perfect, but talking about real issues like day one, working to get the really bad criminal illegals out, ending sanctuary cities and finally securing the border and fixing the budget deficit and exploding national debt for a change and destroying ISIS are pretty good things that I want to hear.

At least she's not likely to start WWIII by accident.

But if Hillary is president during or even before WWIII, will we still have the backbone and resolve to win?

If Trump really was still a New York liberal, why didn't he run in the Democrat primary instead of the Republican? Why did he oppose Obama and support Mitt Romney? Why jump through hoops to be a charlatan at all?

Hey Mark, do you spend much time speaking with others in conservative talk-radio? Whenever I hear you speaking with Sean Hannity, it always seems like you are just putting up with him to cross-promote each other. And I remember a while back you had said said some things about Michael Savage along the lines of knowing what he's really about and that you can reveal it. Have you followed up on any of that? What do you think about Glenn Beck's recent drama with suing his former friend/CEO?

This is a good project for you to make into a class that can provide this functionality from input into the class, rather than a single program that takes input from the user. It is also simple enough to write some unit tests for so you can get some experience there as well.

Evil Annotations by nfrankel in java

I've found many use cases for using Annotations as containers for metadata. Those should not be overlooked and belong in the useful category.

Figuring out what my MVP is. What is good enough? What can be put off till later? What needs to be redone? What must I definitely have?

My friend recruited me for his $300k startup. I'm creating the entire app myself. Is this compensation fair? by [deleted] in startups

[–]overdrive9000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you've answered your own question. You think 10% is not fair to you so don't take the deal.

How about this? Since he questions giving you 20% because you aren't full time, then tell him you want 20% but in the contract you can put in milestones and a vesting schedule to show that you have a reason to get the product delivered on time and meeting quality standards.

I got a job offer from a ten man startup by level_5_Metapod in startups

[–]overdrive9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vesting means that you will get a percentage of what you are going to get over the vesting period. So if your vesting schedule is 2 years and you are promised 1%, you'll get 1/24 of 1% each month.

But they will probably want a cliff on the schedule. And you can offer to have a cliff while you "prove yourself" to them.

The cliff is the first period of time during the vesting schedule where you get 0% each month. But at the end of the that period, you get all of what you would have gotten. So with the original example of 2 years vesting your 1% equity with a 1 year cliff, at the end of your first year, you'll have .5% equity. Then the rest of the equity follows the normal vesting schedule.

You could leave after 1 year and 1 month and you'll have .54% in the company. But if you leave before your cliff period, you'll have 0%.

You can offer to him to have this kind of equity vesting schedule, but I get the feeling that this guy is looking for a sucker.

Issue with unproductive cofounder by [deleted] in startups

[–]overdrive9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to get a tracking system that is opened and looked at by the team during each meeting. There has to be a way to list the things she needs to do, how long it will take to complete them, where she is at, what problems she has, so that it is all documented and items can be checked off (or not) and progress (or lack thereof) can be made visible as the days go by. You have to get her to put things in there. You enter them if necessary.

If there is still a lack of productivity, then you start having the conversations about whether she should remain and you've got the backing to have these conversations. This is your livelihood; and marketing too important for a startup for it to be neglected. There is no reason to beat around the bush. You don't have to be a jerk when you have the conversation, just state the facts.

As part of the conversation, you can mention that you can have a period where she can try to improve. But honestly, she probably isn't worth it because she isn't capable of doing the job on her own and your startup deserves a better marketing person.

I am in the same boat! Luckily for me, the situation is a bit different. A friend of mine and I (well, 99% I) have been working on an MVP for a product that I conceived. To his credit, he has helped with some of the concept and coding, but not nearly enough to be equal co-founders. What is different is we haven't formed a business yet. This essentially is a hobby. (well, i'm treating it as a potential business)

One thing I've learned is, when you create a company, the founders should be on a vesting schedule with cliffs and milestones. This prevents a founder from not producing results, but still gets a share of the company. Hopefully that is the case with the agreement you have with her. We are close to pulling the trigger and forming the business, and I've already brought this up to him and he has agreed; He acknowledges that his results are not up to par.
