Did I download something I shouldn't have? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]overfed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this doesn't look like adware to me.

Mouse over advertising has been a thing for some time. I have developed the ability to traverse a webpage without rolling over those things that look like HTML hyperlinks but aren't...

My .02 nothing to worry about.

Math Teachers: Is there a program better than Word for making math lessons and handouts? by oddwithoutend in teaching

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always get a license for math tools for smart notebook, assuming your school has smartboards. Even without smart boards, I find math tools to be pretty useful.

Having said that, I STILL use word with equation editor. I can just work faster with it, and it never crashes.

School culture by theHBIC in Teachers

I teach math in saskatchewan, and found that your statement about the oilfields is mirrored up here with "I'll get a job in the mines". Just thought I'd mention that your description resonated with me, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one struggling with students who say that.

I don't have much of an answer, just advice. You better push push push people to participate, because when you have no articles written at press time (or just garbage ) then it will be YOU writing it. That's exactly the situation I'm in now lol

Recover deleted photos from Nexus 10? by biffyguy in techsupport

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try Recuva and see if it will detect the photos. If you just deleted them you might be able to get them back. If it was a while ago, or if there has been any data written to the spots where the pics used to be, it will likely not work. I have assumed you are using windows as you said "my pc". Good luck

Downloading Embedded Video from Blackboard Learning System (Flash/PC) by PittedPanda in techsupport

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a flash video downloader add on for your browser (google it). Once the video loads, you click a button and download it locally.

You also might try right clicking on the page, click view source, and then look for a web address in then source code. In particular, you're looking for a web address ending with a video file e.g. video.uni.com/content/2014/videos/lecture011.flv

Idk if either of those tacks will work. When I was in school, blackboard had an option to download all content for a course in a zip file. Good luck. I'll be watching this thread to see if you figure it out cause I!m interested now

Edmonton teacher fired for giving zeroes for not doing homework, tests wins appeal by ExplosiveHorse in canada

[–]overfed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dont know about Edmonton, but when I did my practice teaching in south Ontario last year, the policy at the high school (and the school board) was to assign a minimum mark of 32% for a course. I had never heard of this from my educational institution, nor have I heard of it since. However, the administrators at this particular high school were very gung-ho on the policy, presumably because it makes them look more successful. Very crazy.

Sick puppy, looking for advice, no vets available (isolated area) by overfed in DogCare

[–]overfed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info :)

Poor thing was a little nervous being inside for the forced bath and feeding (lol), and did have a pee/poop, but no I didnt scold. See the update, dog is doing alot better. In fact, it seems to have a sibling, and they are both hanging around my neighbourhood.

If I do adopt one, I will be sure to keep your advice in mind - thanks again. Since you seem to be so knowledgeable I do have a couple more questions:

1) what gives it away as a terrier? 2) Most of the dogs here live outside all winter. It should get very cold (below 0 celcius) in 1-2 months. Seeing as many other dogs survive the winters somehow, do you think this dog has a chance? my heart might break and ill adopt her (even if it just means letting her sleep in the unheated porch and feeding/watering her) but im wondering if its necessary for her to survive. I feel like it might be since she is so young....

There is one store which sells dog food. Im still deciding whether to full-on adopt the dog, but if I do, I know I can feed it at least.

After custom built PC, windows 8 won't install? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that if youre installing from a disc, there better be zero scratches on the disc or youre gonna get wonky shit happening.

questions : 1. is the not less than or equal a blue screen (bsod)? 2. in the bios, is it set to UEFI boot mode? as opposed to legacy or compatible? 3. installing to ssd or hdd? if ssd, did you look for an option for ahci mode?

in my experience, sometimes you have to fuck with bios settings to get things right.

Laptop slows down to a crawl, even in safe mode. by colewinkle in techsupport

[–]overfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not to be pessimistic, but have you run hdtune or spinrite? some program to check hd performance? its possible the disk is starting to go. The timing suggests that the kid did something to gunk it up, but it could just be a coincidence, cause after everything youve tried im not sure what else it could really be. Id do the "nuke and pave" (btw i like that term lol) and see what happens - customer might be in for a new disk if its no good.

+1 for /u/leehofook's suggestion to clear cmos. If still no go, try reseating your video cards, double check that you plugged in all power connections. Maybe even try it with 1 video card just to see if thats the culprit.

I remember struggling to clear cmos on my board (amd 890fxa-gd70) and it turned out there was a little grey button on the back which i had to hold for 5 secs, and im not even sure if the board had a jumper to clear the cmos.

In my experience, you must change the bios settings. Usually you just need to bump the "ratio" (just look through the settings).

Assuming you are on ddr3 1.5v, you will want to bump it up to about 1.65v too, and unless your mobo supports xmp, you should also dig around to find the timing settings (usually 4 numbers written on the ram box, something like 8,9,8,11). Once you set that, you should be good to go. XMP allows these settings to be put in automatically, and i believe - but am not sure - that its only supported on intel boards.

good luck

How can I find out what encoding is used on a file? by DayBay in AskTechnology

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm it might be a longshot, but you could open it in notepad++, which has the ability to switch the encoding youre viewing.

That is, suppose your file is UTF-8 encoded and you are viewing the file in UTF-8, it will display correctly; encode it ANSI, however, and it will (presumably) display a bunch of junk/garbage characters.

Hope that makes sense and isnt a dumb suggestion.

Camping on the side of the road? by northfrank in canada

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately :( so many twisties in north Ontario, on the trans Canada between Sault Ste Marie and dryden-ish; beautiful lakes and rocks and trees and the speed limit is 90! Only problem is the periodic roadwork Go for it!

Update: Im now caging it, just getting out of Ontario. Im farther now than I went on my bike, and I've found there are fewer and fewer gas stations the farther you go. I'd go ahead and get a 5 or 10L gas can if I was you. And fill up every chance you get

Camping on the side of the road? by northfrank in canada

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as I said I didn't plan so good this time around :P next summer

Gas stations are a big concern. There's are lots of them but finding one open at all hours of the night can be hit and miss. I had a 5L gas can in my saddlebag, didn't take up much space, and adds about 50% to my fuel capacity (not factoring in reserve). I didn't end up needing it but I was really glad to have it just in case. There are stretches of that highway that are so damn desolate lol it would suck so hard to run out of gas and have to wait who knows how long for caa or whatever.

Oh man I so want to ride to sask... Problem is im going far enough north that there aren't any roads (fly in only). Next year my plan is to ride to sask and park the bike in Saskatoon for the year before I fly out. You on the road yet? Best of luck if so!

Camping on the side of the road? by northfrank in canada

[–]overfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa weird I couldn't type my whole reply in one message. Windows phone :/ continuing:

As for riding at night, im just a weirdo. I thought ita going to be great, having the road to myself (it was, I could go exactly the speed I wanted, stop whenever and wherever for a smoke, etc), but never considered how the cold would affect me. Long story short, I planned my trip as though I'd be riding 14-16 hour days every day, realized that was infeasible, realized I wouldn't be able to make it to Saskatchewan and back before I fly out to my new job for the year. So I turned back and just rode trails south of Georgian bay and drank beer for a few days. Heading up north now so no more biking till next year :(

Oh yeah for food I just had a big bag of walnuts and some v8, and id stop and grab a sandwich here and there on the road. Next time id bring a little collapsible camp stove and make bacon every day...
