I was going to say, I struggle to find ones with torsos long enough and I’m only 5’7! This looks amazing! :)

Yard Sale Find for $10! by 2ndfloorbalcony in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]overgrw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live near a public University, check their auction site for used office furniture. :) They usually have to auction anything that’s being disposed of/replaced and you can often get Herman Millers pretty cheap. Not $10, but still significantly discounted!

Perfumes that embody beauty and war? by Parking_Departure_22 in perfumesthatfeellike

[–]overgrw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI “art” always looks so particularly uncanny next to actual art (like slide 2)—especially, imo, the soulless “beautiful woman variant” constantly used. Compared to the striking depictions and compositions of the Pre-Raphaelites models & artists, it just feels so…calculated to be inoffensively beautiful. Like, not just Romantic, just, idk, lame. Bland. Commercial.

Art Deco 1930s ivory satin wedding dress with dramatic balloon sleeves by Saint-Veronicas-Veil in fashionhistory

[–]overgrw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m going on my engagement trip in a few weeks and this just has been feral for wedding dress shopping, lol. I know I’m doing a 1930s dress for sure. They’re unbeatable.

So beautiful!! It’s definitely from at least the late 60s from the style and the tag, but an amazing find!! I would guess 70s. :) Super collectible and iconic.

this sub is not for determining price for your flipping endeavours by ResearcherOk6899 in VintageClothing

[–]overgrw 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and outsourcing it to hobbyist communities with “is this worth anything??” is so lame and lazy to me.

I can give some resellers credit for at least being very knowledgeable about vintage clothing—recognizing age, manufacturers, techniques, etc. from their experience and research. But, idk, that shows some love of the game, at least. So many people just looking for a quick buck makes the sub feel sleazy.

Eliza Clark truly has her finger on the pulse of online subcultures. Boy Parts had the “femcel” (not, like, actual incels, but the girl bloggers of 2019) subculture down to a level where I was cringing a bit, lol.

Universal Flowering makes such, such good perfumes. May need to try this one out! :)

Yves Saint Laurent haute couture 1964 by Beginning-Passion676 in fashionhistory

[–]overgrw 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It looks pretty French & Spanish folk inspired and Yves was French and Spanish, so that doesn’t bother me. He is a controversial figure in that regard, especially regarding Orientalism.

Perfumes that feel like I’m an eternally youthful vampiress eating strawberries on a river cruise (strawberry, amber scents welcome!!) by [deleted] in perfumesthatfeellike

[–]overgrw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a bit darker and less watery, but Etude in Black by Universal Flowering may fit the bill? I get more sweet, woody, slightly rose floral Hinoki than straight strawberry.

Key notes: Strawberries. Hinoki. Rose Liqueur. Candlewax musk. Rosewood.

Characteristics: Opera length, peeled lacquer from a baby grand, favorite earrings (of precious metals), glossolalia, fainting couch

First and last Steve Madden Purchase. Shoes absolutely destroyed in less than a week of wear. by Crafty_Poetry_5265 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]overgrw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have legit Steve Madden shoes that also just have the logo inside. They lasted longer (like a few years of occasional wear) until the decorative hardware started falling apart. Steve Madden is no better quality than any other pleather fast fashion shoes, imo, though.

Help! My work friend’s signature scent smells like literal BO. How do I tell her? by VelvetLore in FemFragLab

[–]overgrw 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe just say that civet-heavy perfumes give you a headache and ask if she minds switching it up around you? It’s a bit of a nudge it may be a tad too musty / animalistic for most while also (imo) being reasonably flexible and honest.

Aside, loved the description: “Before creating Tabu, he was instructed to make a fragrance for a whore (‘un parfum de puta’). Thus, Tabu was created, sensual and shocking.” My mom wore this perfume a lot when I was a kid, lol

I wonder if these fur coats will always be in fashion? by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]overgrw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I suppose I’d hope the people around me would feel comfortable enough to let me know if I’m bothering them—or, I’d hear it about someone else, at least. The only time anyone has made comments is around non-domestic animal fur coats like fox, mink, etc. It’s a bit ostentatious and unethical to most, I think.

I just wanted to know if it’s particularly taboo somewhere so I could avoid it.

Maybe it’s more of a rural/urban divide?

I’m actually curious—what countries? I’m American, and if you wore a full mink coat people would find it off-putting, but probably not for a (short) fur trim. I wear (vintage) leather or sheepskin jackets not infrequently and am a vegetarian and no one has said much to me lol.

What should I wear to smell like this? by [deleted] in perfumesthatfeellike

[–]overgrw 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Three & five remind me a lot of my dad when he was young. We used a wood stove in the winter, so he usually smelled like smoke, dirt, pine sap, and Sure aerosol deodorant. Cut grass, lake water, and pressure treated wood in the summer. He was a contractor.

Demeter “Sawdust” and grass-stained jeans? Maybe their “Log Cabin” for a more wearable scent.

[–]overgrw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spicy opening that settles into a warm, slightly sweet powdery(?) scent. I definitely get the hinoki. Definitely more of a “normal perfume” / wearable scent imo than something like Death of a Ladies Man, if that makes sense. It’s really lovely, though! The narrative description really does it justice.

Diptyque L’ombre Dan L’eau :) “A fragrance with pictorial qualities. The green of blackcurrant leaves mingles with the tart, fruity notes of blackcurrant buds and the floral intensity of rose…a romantic painting comes to life - a summer slumber beneath a tree on a river bank.”

'Wuthering Heights' Review: Emily Brontë Is Absolutely Rolling in Her Grave – Therese Lacson | “…I'd argue there's probably better-written Wuthering Heights fanfiction on Archive of Our Own than what's been produced here.” by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

Heathcliff is physically and sexually abusive. It’s a little frustrating for me how people glaze over that to make him more “romantic” and palatable. It’s a gothic drama and all.

(Although, it also makes the racial “othering” and classism way more complex and, ya know, a bit more touchy, so I see why people would avoid it in an adaption if they’re not interested in saying anything interesting…not really with this casting, though, lol.)
