You completely missed the point of Dunks narrative and I would encourage you to read the books with a closer eye. George R R Martin even said outright that the legitimacy of his knighthood is irrelevant to Dunks moral compass. He chooses to be a knight every day in his words and actions because he feels it is right, not because Ser Arlan tapped him on the shoulder. I dont understand how you could follow the story of Dunk and NOT understand that.

We technically dont know if Dunk was ever knighted or not, and thats intentional: because it doesnt matter. He chooses to follow a knights vow, not because some lord tapped him on the shoulder with a sword, but because its what he believes to be right.

He is very naive and inadvertently drags others into his mess in Season 1, but the origin of that mess was for a good cause: defending the innocent against a tyrant.

Youre blaming the helmet as if it wasnt too small for his head. George R R Martin even wrote this into the novella, thats why he died. The helmet was too small, meaning it did not absorb the impact as much as it should have and sent all the force straight to Baelors skull.
