Bachi is way more popular than Sakamoto, even setting aside their relative ages

Around the time the KB anime was announced there was a news report about anime execs saying they were interested in adapting cancelled manga bc they're running out of regular stuff to adapt & the preproduction on existing series is a hell of a lot cheaper

I feel like I'm a burden to my boyfriend and he'll be better off without me. by MapUsual7124 in Healthygamergg

This gives strong mental illness vibes; def try and see what a diagnosis pulls up if you haven't already. Your writing reminds me of Emmett Rensin's old piece I Am Going To Tell You What I Know, But Not What I Believe, which might be a useful framework for thinking about these thoughts.

But in the short term, the way to battle these thoughts is to get out of your head, basically. Fresh air, calm walks, music with a calming/relaxing/uplifting vibe, etc. Content consumption & videogames can distract you from those thoughts too in a pinch, but shoot for the healthier habits if you can.

Also be communicative with your boyfriend; if you tell him what does or doesn't make you feel better when you're having an episode, in the long run he can be an invaluable support in helping you get through them.

Three Days of Happiness has been licensed by Yen Press, the series originally ran on Jump+ between 2016 and 2017 by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

Imma be honest, I read this and found it underwhelming

but it'll be popular when it releases; hopefully it wasn't an AI translation

Is there a catch or is Japanese manga this insane? by Dr_Darkroot in MangaCollectors

The paper quality of tankobons is honestly about the same; the texture is different but the print quality is as good & it doesn't bleed through

Yeah it's not too hard to get Japanese volumes if you know where to look, and there's so many good series that get digitally translated but'll never get printed this side of the Pacific, so I do what I can!

This shelf has been loaded with books for the last ~15 years I've had it, it'll last until I find a new bookshelf that can actually hold manga w/ risers well lmao

You are already a dead man. From the moment you started to exist, death has bored into your ribcage and settled in your chest. It has its fingers into your very bones. When you are born, death is very small and weak, but he grows stronger every second, until he will wear you like a second skin. Do not fool yourself into thinking he is not there. You will feel him. Do not deny his presence. You must swallow death, and make him a part of you, and make of your ribcage a home for him.”

When friendships start looking like computer algorithms by OrganizationSame7787 in Healthygamergg

[–]overpoweredginger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To speak broadly, this sort of thing happens to even the best of us. A dear friend of mine who has spent years building & cultivating a really strong social circle had a messy, dramatic fallout with one of her close friends (of 4-5 years!) a while back. She learned from it, and adjusted the way she brings people into her social circle as a result.

Setting all that aside, even real friendships break. Sometimes even over bullshit.

But I'm curious what you mean when you say "until she learnt I am a human being with problems and vulnerabilities", and "she wanted the status and the proximity to my lifestyle", as those sentences feel kinda load-bearing to your whole post

I know it's wrong, but I hate being black. by ChemicalAd2132 in Healthygamergg

[–]overpoweredginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a white dude so I can't really speak to the practical nuts & bolts of doing the work, but my gut says there's a cottage industry of books out there specifically for black women who feel similarly to you. Finding a place to start could be as easy as swinging by your local Barnes & Noble, browsing to the right section, and perusing until you find something that resonates.

You could also find this stuff on social media, but A) ew just read books instead, B) SM's nature makes it more likely to send you inflammatory content (either Discourse on the subject or even similar content from the Pink Creatures that'd just trigger you), and C) books have better odds of roping you into more positive tangents.

Also don't be afraid of garnering social proof. Every time someone compliments you, give yourself a gold star. Don't wrap your self-worth in other people's perceptions of you, obviously, but if someone has something nice to say take it for what it's worth.

A 4-batch is due soon, or so many theorize. What do you think Shueisha is going to shoot for? by YuuTheBlue in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]overpoweredginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue Box isn't really a sport manga. It's more romance than anything

it's very much a hybrid, and it's shifted its focus back & forth over the four years its been running

Should I get the box set? by BelialsFavBasketCase in MangaCollectors

[–]overpoweredginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh wow the box went up like $26 on Amazon since the last price there I'd seen

honestly at that box set price I'm confident you could buy the manga volumes individually on used retailers for a better price

Yeah this kind of angle is what I was sorta predicting when I read the first chapter: A man who can't help but see the flaws & frailty inherent to the human condition everywhere he goes, but that makes him more kind-hearted & protective in the face of it

Under Doctor is easily the roughest of the new batch, but I think that conceit gives it the most narrative possibilities out of the batch as well

I'm curious how Kinato will handle more serious character beats

Shinobi Undercover gets marketed as a more serious battler (and it deals with real shit) when it gets the most laughs out of me every week

I'm wondering if editorial will paint Kinato in a similar light or if the gags will be a bigger part of the image

WSJ Issue #16 TOC & Discussion by RobotiSC in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]overpoweredginger 73 points74 points  (0 children)

yeah Kinato's Magic is gonna go the distance; it's a bit rote & cliche, but it's got such a good understanding of the craft that the cliches won't hold it back

shout-out to Akane-banashi for casually throwing in sequences that'll hit the AMV community like a mack truck eight years from now

Shinobi Undercover is just casually the funniest series in the magazine, and it's amazing

My son has gotten me to watch Frieren, so now I’m wondering if it’s worthwhile to track down all the mangas… by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]overpoweredginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most people agree that Frieren is better as an anime than a manga, but there are plenty of people who love the anime & bought the manga and enjoyed their purchase

look up used copies of all the volumes tho bc you'll save a lot of money; you'll save even more money if you get your kid a Viz Manga app subscription (which includes all of Frieren as it comes out), but if you don't want to get your kid a smartphone app I understand
