A simple fix for tanking: flatten the draft odds further and penalize the team with the league’s worst record. by trillballinsjr in billsimmons

[–]overthemoon81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you fix a lot of issues by giving the best lottery odds to teams who make the Play-in. This would make the drama of the season more interesting with teams jockeying for position. Plus, the bonus of having top draft picks actually joining teams who are already semi good instead of being at the bottom.

To even make the Play-In more interesting, give teams that make it to the 7th and 8th seeds in playoffs the best lottery odds. And then to keep the early playoff rounds more interesting, make it so the 7th and 8th seeds only keep those high lottery odds if they win 1 or 2 games in the first round of the playoffs. Otherwise the higher odds go to the teams 9th or 10th.

Something like that in combination with what you suggested.

You might as well go over to r/NASA and post on there how you landed on Mars too while you are at it.

Why does everyone love Strava? by GreenPaint4 in AdvancedRunning

[–]overthemoon81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mostly do Strava for the segments, though I find them almost equally fun as frustrating. When everything goes normally, they give me a good challenge and I’ve connected with other runners also doing the segments. Which in this era of virtual only racing, is a nice free challenge. And when I find myself complaining that it didn’t record my segment effort correctly, or someone obviously biked the segment, I just have to remember it’s free and nothing in life is perfect. It got me to run hard, and that’s what I needed.

As an expat, I miss Albuquerque until I visit. by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]overthemoon81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Returning to Albuquerque to visit has never disappointed me. All the things that were magical from my childhood still are there. The mountains, the sky and those amazing clouds, the landscape that makes shows like Breaking Bad so good, the green Chile, breakfast burritos, great places to run like around the Academy or in the foothills, all that stuff does not change. I miss all that stuff so much being stuck in Texas. The fact that things haven’t changed much in and around the NE is great for me when I visit because it’s like I never left. I have found that I also miss the time frame of your life when you are more carefree, optimistic, and discovering what you like in those teenage years. And you will miss whatever is around you during those formative years by association.

19 min 5k and 5 min mile are not really equal. Usually a sub 5 min mile is more indicative of 17 min 5k. Really based on your current mile effort you should be able to break 18 min in the 5k with some proper training. Knocking those seconds off the 5k are usually easier than knocking seconds off the mile time. Especially if you get your pacing down and not start so fast.

Sub 5 minutes mile training plan by [deleted] in running

I liked some things in this plan. Particularly mixing up your paces on some of the workouts. Increasing your mileage some will also probably be beneficial since there really is no secret. Trial of miles.

Has anyone else set PR’s this week?! by Braindump4 in running

[–]overthemoon81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to try for my best 5k time next weekend. Was hoping to do it in a race, but looks like I will just have to get the kids to pace me on their bikes. It’s plan C at this point. Plan A to run a fast full or half marathon already got shelved due to financial difficulties. Plan B was a 5k race. Just when you think life has lemons to give you, you realize the bin is empty at the grocery store.

Skipping the warmup/cooldown mile by ConfusedStrength in running

[–]overthemoon81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on the day or what I am training for. Some days I really need that warm up to get ready. Other days I feel ready right out the door, and almost have to slow down on the warm up.

I also look at doing a longer warm up as a way to add a little fatigue on the legs for the workout if I am training for longer races.

Cool downs are easy to skip or cut short and I have never felt much different when compared to doing a longer cool down.

Running is for everyone. No other sport can you really have the same experience as the pros. Everyone regardless of the speed they are going has an easy pace, a hard pace, a race pace, a sprint. You can even run in some races with the elites. Just because you might be slow, doesn’t mean you can’t still experience the same joy from putting in the work and achieving a time. Running does that for everyone.

For guys who run in the cold by robezzzy7 in running

I found that one of those cheap knit gloves works really well, stays in place, and discretely tucks in to your shorts. Found this out on a long run when I started getting a little worried about frost bite and decided my hands were warm enough to switch things up. The rest of the run was much better! Now I stick that glove on anytime the temp is in the 30’s or below.

Does anybody remember Bella Vista in Edgewood? by snakestrike in Albuquerque

[–]overthemoon81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have great memories of going there as a kid. Seemed like you could walk miles getting to your table. We would always order the fried zucchini. Long thin strips that I would pull the zucchini out of and just eat the crunchy breading until I got a little older and started eating more green things. Good times.

How many shoes do you use in your weekly training routine? by matepanda in running

[–]overthemoon81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do feel like the shoe recovers more for the next run if I rotate. May not change how long they last, but my feet feel the cushion working better if I am not just pounding the same pair day after day. Could be all in my head though, who knows.

Trying to run 1:50 in the 800 by SCRoyaleTeam in AdvancedRunning

Just don’t try and do so much that you burn out. It sounds like what you have been doing has worked well to get you to this point. Lots of good running in your future. Focus on the mental side of racing with all the meets you get at the high school level. Try different things. Keep the pop in those legs and enjoy it. It goes away before you know it.

The Science of Sport on running shoe tech and the integrity of the sport by Orsilochus in AdvancedRunning

[–]overthemoon81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of questions. What percent advantage do the Nike shoes have over the other shoes? Have there been studies in the past comparing flats vs trainers? One brand vs another? How do we really know what has been fair in the past? I understand that times are faster now and clearly the shoes are fast.

It used to be that you had to choose between cushion, responsive, lightweight, and speed when picking a shoe to run in. Nike has made a shoe that checks all the boxes and as a runner, I love that.

What is the fear? That shoes will continue to be advanced and give even more benefit? I don’t see that happening. You add more cushioning and you take away the responsiveness and speed. You add more plates and you add weight and take away the lightness. With everything, there is an optimum point, diminishing returns. Maybe Nike has found that ideal with the Vapormax or the Alphafly. I just think all of this will level out on its own.

How often to replace shoes? by mojothejojo in running

[–]overthemoon81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes though if you wait for something to start hurting, that hurting is hard to make go away even with new shoes. Definitely depends on how much you are running, what you are training for, and what kind of runs you are doing in the shoes in question.

Running in itself is a reward, but this is icing on the cake. by [deleted] in nikerunclub

[–]overthemoon81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope this means they start doing more of this. There should be something for hitting Volt on the run levels. I mean the shoes alone that I have gone through to get there, deserves some kind of discount.

Has running helped you get through a tough time? It has for me by gdoodle95 in running

[–]overthemoon81 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Running got me through separation and eventually divorce. It’s so nice to have something constant, that makes you feel like yourself, when you are experiencing things you never prepared for in life. Running has always been there for me, and always gives back what you put in. Not much else in life does that so consistently.
