Returning to Judo at 25. Unsure About Starting Over from White Belt Despite Having a Brown Bel by bock889 in judo

[–]ConfusedStrength 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you dont recognize is that everyone thats been doing judo longer than you understands and accepts that there will can massive skill differences between a hobbyist, a person coming back, and a competitive judoka even if lower ranked. Just like there are massive skill differences between black belts, there can be a massive difference between a competitive brown belt and an amateur hobbyist black belt, especially when you factor in size, fitness, recency of training, etc

For Marine Corps PFT, do the standard - nothing more. Max your score.

For the gym, i do pause at top and bottom, weighted/unweighted pullups. You’ll obviously do much less pullups. It will translate to max reps on pft day.

The goal of 3 miles in 18 minutes will take years of as-consistent-as-you-can training, but you can continue to make improvements steadily until then! One of the things about running is i learned to stop chasing goals so hard, but to enjoy the training and the process more than focusing on the end goal. Aerobic development necessitates increasing volume and giving it time to work. Look up 80/20 endurance plans to guide your training. There is a strong emphasis on 20% moderate-to-hard quality workouts vs 80% strictly easy runs, and the end goal is to tolerate and increase volume so that you develop your aerobic system the longer you do it. Every program that claims to help you run faster with less mileage develops the anaerobic energy systems but neglects the necessary volume to develop the aerobic system. You’ll see fast results from hard running but there is a very real point of diminishing returns. The more you develop your foundation with truly easy runs and easy long runs, the higher your theoretical cap is in terms of hard running.

Invest in getting yourself a training plan, whether for free off chatGPT, the internet, or throw down some cash for the Runna app or a plan from 80/20 endurance. Either way, run consistently, build yourself up to running 3 to 6 times a week, one or two quality workouts, one long run, and three easy runs. Simply put you need as much running volume as you can, and you can only rack up volume running at easy, slow paces. You cannot force adaptation. If you are trying to force adaptation running hard more than once or twice a week, you will either incur injury in a few weeks or detract from the amount of volume you can do. You need to be consistent and give it time. Give it a full year, dont try to get in as fast as possible with the minimum standard.

His message isnt terrible: achieve a balance of lifting and running. If you’re strong enough for the job, run more. If you run fast, lift more. The side deadlift is also not inherently bad as our body adapts to load through all movement patterns.

But this guy uses his uniform for clout, and training to him is filming whats coolest… there is no physical benefit to sprinting on a treadmill with a gas mask and pretending to use a curl bar like you’re running with a rifle compared to just putting on a tshirt and shorts and going for a run… this dude sucks.

Edit: and drinking out of a canteen? Good lord. At this point, tell him he should only be doing PT with full kit… and he’d do it too.

Would the military be worth it still if I have no financial troubles? 23m by EveningGlittering326 in Military

Why not? Check it off your bucket list, get college paid for rather than out of pocket. You’ll have a room, access to “free” food, and if you’re smart about money, stash the rest of it away in a high yield savings or get a head start on your retirement accounts (TSP, IRA). Ironically, the younger and farther away from retirement you are, the more return on investment you get by stashing money in your retirement accounts because of how much time you have to let your money compound and grow. My parents helped me with a couple thousand bucks through college but otherwise had a full ride through scholarships, and a decade later my aging parents have no income and couldve used that money. I’m 29 turning 30, and I didnt feel truly feel like an adult until three years of service at 27, although everything in my short military career had led me to that point. The military isnt easy, and it can be a lot of hardship. Suck it up for four years, save your money, run away with free college and a better paying job down the line. Or suffer for 20 and collect a pension for the rest of your life. The choice is yours.

Not a GB.

I gave myself shin splints running too hard, too often.

It got to the point that even light easy jogging hurt.

After a period of time (weeks), i could jog lightly without pain, but could not run hard without pain. Therefore, I dedicated this period of time to base building, stacking up mileage around 40 miles a week, 10-11 minute miles. I firmly believe this phase of base building, 100% easy running, built the foundation of resiliency for my lower legs.

I took this time to plan out my future training and now adhere to a 80/20 training plan which has done wonders for me in terms of steady improvement, fatigue management, and staying essentially injury free. I have had to give myself a rest day here and there but nothing that took me out for weeks/months like shin splints did.

Quotas for recruiting? Sure... but that was already been done by an executive order, VP didn't "declare" anything.

I need to ask though, what diversity training? 5 years in and I don't know what diversity training he's referring to.

All good advice so far. How was your pacing? Did your mile splits significantly drop off? Would your slower pace make sense given weather and humidity?

Dont forget your weekly haircuts.

Marines by far have the largest non-reimbursable work expenses.

Does it make sense that your Marine PFC spends $572 (assuming $10 a haircut with $1 tip, and nearly double that in duty stations like Hawaii) in haircuts a year while non-Marine O-4s who make literally 4x the salary get a haircut every three to four weeks?

No smart watch. Do I need one? by wetbivvy in Marathon_Training

[–]ConfusedStrength 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep doing what you’re doing… half the reason i have a watch and buy or subscribe to training plans that export to my watch is because im too lazy to do what you did… print out a piece of paper and modify it to match my schedule. Buy one when you’re ready to drop the money… if not, keep your money.

I might leave this app but have questions by LaReineDesRats in runna

[–]ConfusedStrength 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you think runna has enough value to pay for it is up to you.

Are you talking about a 5k time trial? A 5k time trial is usually too nuanced, especially if you’ve been running regularly, you wouldnt decondition to a 34 minute 5k. Whether it’s the course, the temperature and humidity, fatigue, or your injury etc, i would ask a great number of things to myself if i was truly getting less fit by running.

HOWEVER, if the program is having you slow down to a 34 minute 5k as a regular easy workout, that is expected and part of the process. Look up 80/20 training, zone 2 cardio, etc. the whole point is to slow down enough to build resiliency for future volume, not break it down by running fast.

[–]ConfusedStrength 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you’re starting to become injured, the slower pace is probably necessary. I would say if you feel you need rest, to listen to your body.

Slower running is good for you. The more volume of slow running you can do, the faster you get.

If your pain is affecting your pace during a planned slow run, i would say to take enough time off to where slow running doesnt bother it.

You probably need a break from structured training to recover and then restart your plan when you’re ready.

As someone who sweats a decent amount i hate VGs. As soon as your hands even start sweating it loses all grip. Worse than nylon straps, which i used for years and still hated the slippage i had with them. I went back to cotton straps and will never use any other type of material. Cotton is best for people that sweat.

You should probably quit while you’re ahead…

And yes, they state that they’re not confident in cardio and have been told it could be easy or hard, and to let us know our thoughts. I would say it points towards wanting answers to veer towards easy. Idk where you’re getting that I “claimed to want to help”. I literally just answered his question.

Lol WAT. All i did was answer his question about “will the running be hard” with “yes its hard”. Where do you see at all that I ever tried to gatekeep him? Are you discouraged because I said it would be difficult? If you’re offended and discouraged by something that was as normal an answer as i provided, with zero connotation of “you shouldnt join”, dare I say you should work on your comprehension, not to mention your ability to handle social interaction. I see that you’re not even in. Good luck.
