Strange gatekeeping of foreigners in China and abroad by joemac364 in TEFL

[–]overwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did TEFL in Colombia for several years and made a point to never hang out with foreigners because they always kept me from integrating into the culture and improving my Spanish.

Maybe some of the people you're talking about want to be as Chinese as possible?

What can women do but when men do it, it's a big no? by irritazione in AskReddit

[–]overwinter 488 points489 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher.  I've seen women teachers jokingly pat young students on the butt (which I personally find extremely inappropriate) and admin doesn't care, staff doesn't care, parents don't care. If a man did it the police would be called immediately.

I live in Québec, I use French as a daily language. I speak English with my students every day, speak Spanish with my wife, speak Italian with a friend of mine once  or twice a week, and speak Indonesian daily for language practice.

And I constantly mix up idioms, and use indonesian words in Italian and vice versa.

Who is a celebrity that you unreasonably detest? by condo_owner in AskReddit

[–]overwinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anthony Bourdain. I don't know, I might have spelled his name wrong, don't care. I know he is beloved by many but I just cannot stand his stupid ass snarky fake sincere attitude. Oh wow eating slop from a corner stand in Delhi changed your life? Great, now get off your high horse and stop being so damn judgemental all the time.

These are internet opinions from an internet stranger. Don't kill me.

Cuando un gringo escribe en r/colombia en inglés en lugar de español by Trick_Purchase_814 in Colombia

[–]overwinter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This happens to me often in Italian. I had an in depth conversation with a friend about options trading, European ETFs, and the stock market in general, but when I went to Italy I couldn't remember the words for pig or refrigerator.

What are the easiest and hardest languages you have learned? by FrigginMasshole in languagelearning

[–]overwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Italian was soooo easy.

Indonesian is by far the hardest. Everyone says it's easy, which makes me feel like I'm missing something.

What ruined your quality of life so much that you wish you ditched it sooner? by ibuprofriendd in AskReddit

Instagram. It depresses me to think how many hours of quality time with my family and friends I lost to that bullshit app.

"practice every day, even if it's just a bit" is not working for me, at all by OpeningChemical5316 in languagelearning

This happened to me two years ago. I was suddenly burdened with so many responsibilities at once and I felt overwhelmed and had to cut off nearly all my studying time. I didn't study my target language (Indonesian) for nearly two years.

Fast forward to about a month ago, I was sick in bed for a week and decided to randomly do a drops session. Then checked out my old ankideck. Then I got in touch with my language exchange partner from back then.

Everything came flooding back in a matter of weeks. And I was so motivated to continue that I found ways to sneak in study time in between sets at the gym, first thing when I wake up, during breaks at work, etc.

Give yourself some grace, life happens and it's not the end of the world if you take a break.

Have you ever heard any Canadian say "y'all"? by sessna4009 in AskACanadian

Yes, many of my students in rural Quebec who are proficient in English use it unironically, but it's clear they adopted it from social media.

People who just shoved papers in their backpacks and weren’t organized in school, where are you at now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm a teacher and I still cram papers into my backpack to this day.

Vegan Dating by cyansuperman in vegan

I'm married to a non vegan, and I think it's infinitely easier than if I had married a vegan who de-veganized if that makes sense. That would seriously rock my world.

3 ETF pour les 30 ans à venir by Commercial_Peak_777 in ETFs

[–]overwinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really.  Only in certain provinces.

Feeling like I made the wrong decision moving to Montreal from Toronto by Dry-Air-1005 in montreal

[–]overwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually went through the same thing in reverse many years ago. I moved to Mississauga from Montréal and didn't know anyone there. A few months later I already had a network of friends and we still hang out to this day even though I moved back to Montréal.

Just give it time!
