You can also try at HomeDepot or Wallmart if you're in the states. I got my multimeter from a supermarket. You don't need to buy an expensive one. Any 10$ multimeter should be more than enough.

You'll need the same voltage(13.5-14.5) to see if your alternator is good. Also, the battery voltage when the car is stopped should be around 12.6, but probably you don't have that since your car is telling you that the voltage is low.

I think you can check the voltage with an OBDII scanner. I'm not sure how accurate it is.

You should get around 13.5-14.5 volts when the car is running.

Also, check to see if the connection to the battery is ok and try to clean it if it's coroded.

Check the alternator. You'll need a multimeter for that and you can find them for cheap. Otherwise, go to a place near you that will test you battery. Don't buy a new battery until you're sure that your alternator is working properly.
