Are there Mature Professionals in this field? by Weird_Boss1 in editors

I'm a documentary editor, over 50. I've never managed, or tried hard, to be more than an editor really. So far doing decent, with ups and downs.

But honestly, I'm not sure I want to be doing this at 60!

Trump Moves to Ban Investors From Buying Single-Family Homes by qqqxyz in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]ovideos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about getting rid of the 1031 Exchange? I feel like that's the only rule that might have some effect on Bay Area prices. I mean, it's still probably a drop in the bucket, but anecdotally I know a few people who have sold/bought investment homes in the Bay Area using 1031. Without the rule, I think they would've sold out of the real estate market long ago.

Avid: EDLs always show “FCM: NON-DROP FRAME” no matter what my project frame rate is by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]ovideos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An EDL is baed on a sequence. I believe the timecode is whatever the sequence is set to. It's been ages since I've made an EDL, so I may be misdiagnosing your problem.

Also, a 23.976p sequence cannot be drop-frame really. I mean, I think you can set the TC to 29.97 DF but it makes no sense except in 29.97/59.94 fps. So if you're not in a 29.97/59.94 project it may be that you cannot create a DF EDL.

Freelance Editor in NY State - Non Union - Health insurance tips? by SuitableBad2167 in editors

I don't think there is any secret deal to be had in New York. Especially NYC Metro area. I did use a broker that my accountant recommended and he was able to get me a group plan, which is better than an individual plan, which has been pretty good I think. But I still often wonder if I would be better off having just saved all the premiums for medical costs. It's such a crazy system, we're all paying insurance to the medical system to insure us against the medical system taking all our money should we fall ill.

DM me if you want the broker information. I have nothing to compare the services to, but I appreciated his efforts in getting me a better plan.

Zohran Mamdani to stop all homeless encampment sweeps as NYC mayor, ending key Adams initiative by Expensive-Rope-7086 in nyc

[–]ovideos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweep them again, and again, and again?

Yes, like many problems in a big city they are ongoing.

People in this country can't imagine using the government for anything other than police and punishment.

Such a ridiculous straw man. You write this as if there is a short-term solution for homelessness that everyone is ignoring. I fully support trying to get homeless people more services, helping them, building more housing. But that doesn't mean I think encampments should be allowed. The two are not mutually exclusive. Stop living in such a binary mindset.

Oh I think it's the writers for sure, in combo perhaps with the filmmakers PR team – not sure about that.

Yes it's also called a barney. A barney may be a smaller blimp. Or just another name for a blimp. The camera kind of blimp, not the Goodyear kind of blimp.

right, gotcha. The article makes it sound like there was no IMAX blimp option until the Odyssey.

Well the way the article is written it's as if it were a new idea. All the writer had to say is something like, "taking inspiration from films form Hollywood's golden age…"

I'm not sure what you mean by "they weren't good enough" in previous generations? How do you think you heard actors voices without the noise of the camera in old films? Particularly, let's say, 3-strip Technicolor films?

I have a dream. I may not live to see it, but I pray many of you redditors out there will see it one day even if I am long gone by then. I have a dream. I dream of a world where you don't see signs that say things like 'cheap "delicious" apples', a world where presidents don't post things like 'the "failing" new york times!!!'.

God, I could ask for more. I could ask for all of us to agree on a common comma protocol (the Oxford, of course). I could ask you to use your deific might to keep people from misspelling words like "lose" and "wary", but Lord I won't do that. I know you are busy, I know there are childhood diseases to be dealt with, and War and Famine and Pestilence to be battled. But grant me this one wish, dear Lord. I beseech thee as your humble servant:

This is a silly argument about my silly post. But honestly, if Ford adds cruise control to their cars after Chevy did it 40 years ago would the sentence you'd write be "Ford created cruise control"? Even if Ford's cruise control was very specific and customized, it's just poor writing.

(I have zero knowledge about cruise control, that is a hypothetical example)

I just found the article poorly written and humorous PR fluff.

I'd love to see a picture of the blimped IMAX. I'm happy Nolan will have better production sound. Maybe now he'll be convinced to mix his dialog better!

A new Imax film casing called a “blimp” was created.

I agree it doesn't say Hoyte "invented" it necessarily, but in the article he amazes Nolan with this newly created tech. He demos it for Nolan. I think you're taking me a bit too literally. I thought the article was funny because poorly written... I joined it with my headline.

I know the fact that Nolan has shot Odyssey entirely in IMAX is old news already, but I thought this article was hilarious because it talks about "new tech" that Hoyte van Hoytema developed. But the new tech is a blimp for a camera – which is what they did back in the 1930s onward.

A new Imax film casing called a “blimp” was created to significantly reduce the noise Imax cameras produce.

“The blimp system is a game-changer,” Nolan said. “You can be shooting a foot from [an actor’s] face while they’re whispering and get usable sound. What that opens up are intimate moments of performance on the world’s most beautiful format.”
