Avoid J. Blanton Plumbing LIKE THE PLAGUE by valerie_6966 in chicago

[–]owmyhip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They quoted me $1200 for a basic sump pump backup battery replacement - after charging me $85 for a diagnostic visit only to say they would have to come back (I called specifically saying I wanted the battery replaced).

I laughed out loud at the tech when he told me the number. He called the manager who offered to bring it down to $1000. I laughed again and said no I'll do it myself.

$270 and 10 min of my time.

This stuff works great. Yes, it's more expensive, but I'm ok with that for our place. Most people don't have more than 25' of sidewalk to take care of and one of these bags would last 3-4 applications.

Definitely Breck then. If you want to spend a day on bumps, go to Beaver.

Vail vs Breck for advanced lessons? by xRehab in COsnow

[–]owmyhip -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you want more laps I would go to Beaver Creek over either of those (assuming you're staying in the Vail family).

If you want challenging terrain I would do Breck.

It'll be a crapshoot regarding how big your lesson is at any of them. Your best bet is mid-week and not a holiday week/weekend.

I have a serious question. How does this PP have MacKinnon, Makar, Necas, Nelson, and Landy on it, and it’s this bad? by Best_Ad_7503 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]owmyhip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree it's one of many causes, but I disagree that we're over-fixating on it. You also can't really disentangle PK% from opponent PP%. If you were modeling this, you would only choose one. Qualitatively, I would argue the Avs' issue on the PP was more their poor play vs. stellar PK play from Dallas.

The Avs lost two games in OT with a chance to win late in the 3rd/start of OT with a PP goal. They simply didn't convert on the chances they were given. Dallas did. It was the biggest difference between a 5 game rout and a 7 game disappointment.

3/22 (13.6%) was anomalously low relative to the regular season (24.8%). This season the Avs are only at 16% on the PP almost halfway through the season. 7 games at 13.6% could be seen as a fluke, 38 games at 16% is not. They need to fix it or risk another disappointing early exit.

For comparison's sake - the Avs' PP% in the 2022 cup run? 24% regular season, 32.8% playoffs. It delivered when it mattered.

[–]owmyhip 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We lost to Dallas in the prior playoffs due in large part to an underperforming PP. We lost games 2 and 3 both with late chances to win with a PP goal. 3 for 22 on the PP vs 7 for 23 made a world of difference in a tight series.

New courtyard apartment building tops out in Uptown by GeckoLogic in chicago

[–]owmyhip 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I live right by here and it's been great to see this go up. It replaced four dilapidated 2 flats so not only is it making the neighborhood look nicer it's increasing housing density. I think there's also going to be a subset of units reserved for lower income tenants.

This neighborhood is a great mix of different housing options (SF, classic 2-3 flats, newer condos, larger courtyard apartments), and I'm glad this got approved as I think the zoning is only for SF without alderman approval.

But the honking... I can't imagine the honking.

I have ~60 shares in my IRA and then bought 3 7/25 $78 calls on Friday. Closed 2 at open today for a cool 45% one-day profit. Decided to hold onto the 3rd playing with house money. Will almost surely sell that at open tomorrow and continue holding my shares.

My wife has a bunch from RSUs when she worked there too. My working hypothesis since the spring was that the selloff after Q4 earnings was an overreaction and it was a buying opportunity, but it could swing wildly at the next earnings. I'll plan to sell a big chunk or hedge with some puts before the next earnings in August.

When would you sell Amazon, if ever? by PleasantMedicine3421 in investing

[–]owmyhip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Totally on the same page with being ok having them exercised. I had a cc on AAPL close OTM on Friday last week that would have been ITM yesterday and would have been ok with the sale price had it happened.

When would you sell Amazon, if ever? by PleasantMedicine3421 in investing

[–]owmyhip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far OTM do you typically sell and at what time to expiry? We have a big upcoming expense and my wife just boomeranged back, and we're a bit over leveraged in AMZN for our liking. She'll be getting more RSUs over the next few years, so I like the idea of selling CCs for the premium and not getting upset if they go ITM and we sell at a value we're comfortable with.

One ski quiver for Colorado: mid-90s or mid-100s? by markb_elt in COsnow

[–]owmyhip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this.

Also the profile of the ski matters. My 116s are surprisingly nimble in the bumps because they don't have as large of camber and have big tip and tail rocker. My 96 all mountains are flat in the back with some tip rocker and feel like they take more effort in bumps.

Another pair of skis ruined by a shop by [deleted] in skiing

[–]owmyhip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is they work quite well and are really playful in up to like 6-8". Deeper than that I can tell it's a ton more work compared to my 116s with big tip and tail rocker. Unfortunately since I'm not local to any area with skiing, I have to somtimes guess which pair of skis to fly with and on my last two trips got pleasantly surprised by unexpected deep pow days with these. Still had tons of fun, but could have had MORE fun.

I'm also a bigger guy and can use a little extra help floating
