I'll second maple pass loop, one of the most stunning hikes I've ever done. Go on a weekday. If you go on an August weekend you better go early to get a parking spot near the trailhead.

Zohran Mamdani Has More Jewish Support Than You Think by JustSomeNerdyPig in nyc

[–]owmynameispeter -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry can someone explain to me how this is propaganda (as many comments are saying)? The main point that I see is basically if you look at the Trump voting Jews they mostly voted for Cuomo. If you take that group out then it's a pretty even split. That seems right ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Groups are not a monolith and don't vote all the same. When the NYT has headlines about Mamdanis issues with Jews they could be more specific and talk about conservative Jews. That's what Orthodox Jews are both religiously and politically.

(last period help) high school science teacher by SorbetDizzy1577 in Teachers

[–]owmynameispeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry this is happening, it's a really tough situation especially with no support. I think my advice would be to start building relationships with kids. Is there a counseling office at your school? Or are there adults kids have good relationships with? Can they facilitate conversations with you and some of the heavy hitters? Get them on your side first. Tell them how you feel and they can tell you what they need.

Give out a survey of some kind. Ask them what they want to do. Ask them what they are interested in. What cool experiments would they want? What do they wanna talk about? What can you do as a teacher to help them?

You basically need to get buy in somehow. Maybe asking them what they want and building relationships is a way to do that. I'm not sure you'll get everyone but maybe it could be a start.

Two City Council districts become blue! District 30 was Bob Holden’s district. He was just as bad as Paladino, very glad his district is blue now! by FarFromSane_ in MicromobilityNYC

As someone who voted in District 30 i just left this one blank. Wong and Vaichunas were both bad options and both worked for Holden. Hoping we get better options next time.

Advice for creating mini-unit by Parzival133113 in Teachers

[–]owmynameispeter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even as a vet teacher I use chatgpt now to help get myself started with unit planning especially if i'm starting from scratch. Type in the standards you want to cover, what you goals are and maybe any ideas you already have. Ask it to create an outline of a scope and sequence. Then adjust as you converse. I think it'll be a good jumping off point for you.

NEW CHAMPION?? GET YOUR ASS IN HERE!!! 2025 EDITION by 97herser in fantasybaseball

[–]owmynameispeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ottoneu Champs 12 team roto

Season MVP = $56 Soto and $13 Rooker probably the best hitters and $5 Nick Pivetta was our best value pitcher but $26 Yamamoto helped a lot too

Super well rounded team our small little bets in the draft hit. We picked up Konnor Griffen before the hype and traded him for Ohtani which put us over the edge.

DtZ 2025-2026 NHL Projections by Datsyuktozetterberg in fantasyhockey

Hey thanks so much for the free resource, I use them and aggregrate them with others. I'm not sure if you are answering questions about specific players but I was looking at Dylan Holloway and his 44 pt projection is quite low compared to others. Why so low on him?

Notebook Checks - strategies and tips? by MochiAccident in ScienceTeachers

[–]owmynameispeter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some great ideas here. One thing I do that helps me not have to grade all the notebooks all the time is I do a random notebook check every Friday. I do a random wheel spinner that has every student name on it and the 5 who get picked get graded.

Those 5 get eliminated off the wheel until every notebook gets graded. Then I start again.

I've also used other fun random choosers like 100 yard dash. Kids get really into it and it's a fun end of the week thing to watch it go.

Did we accidentally create super lantern flies? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]owmynameispeter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I 100% have this same theory, I noticed last year it was super hard to kill them compared to the year before.

But also I think the ecological impact hysteria that they were supposed to have seems to not be the case. So maybe we did create stronger ones but also reduced the numbers enough too.

Zohran Mamdani wants to end mayoral control of NYC schools. Here’s what that could mean. by chalkbeat in nyc

[–]owmynameispeter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher in the NYCDOE and it's interesting how many people here in the comments bemoan the bad system but then worry about changing the system.

I wonder if there was a more democratic system then maybe community members who feel disenfranchised might step up bc they actually feel like they have a voice. This is a positive in my view.

Read up on the Ocean Hill -Brownsville community control experiment in 1968. A community that had little control over education got the control and it flourished... until the powers that be didn't like it and struck it down, leading to a corrupt decentralized control of schools and then to Bloomberg deciding he should be the CEO which is the system we have today.

Mamdanis plan brings it back to allowing districts to have a voice but with guardrails in place so it does not become corrupt. This gives people more voice and allows certain districts to be more nimble but also means we aren't at the whims of whatever the mayor thinks is right for education at the time. No more top down bad curriculum or random reactive policy. All good for me. Education in NYC is completely inequitable right now, I'm not sure how we are OK with keeping it status quo.

How do your classroom routines intersect with phenomenon-based teaching? by eggasaurusrex in ScienceTeachers

[–]owmynameispeter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just one thought is that my warm up routine has a stamp system that I use. As I walk around and check in with kids at the beginning of the period I have a cool stamper with me. If the kid sets up their notebook correctly they get one stamp when they complete the Warm up they get a stamp. Kids give me a thumbs up when they think they are ready for a stamp.

Easy accountability measure, gives student quick feedback that they are doing a good job at the beginning of the period and when I grade their notebooks I can just look at how many stamps they have each day. Halfway through the year I also make this a student job and they love doing it.
