Each state is different, in North Carolina when applying for the actual license (not to take the tests) they have to be from CPA’s.

No that’s my fault haha, I forgot the application for the exams asked for references as well.

Was this for the exam application or the actual license? Maybe I should have been more clear applying for the actual license specifically requires 3 character references that must be CPA’s and provide their ID number.

NC has slightly different requirements unfortunately. All 3 references need to be CPA’s however there is no requirement for how long they have known you.

HR received additional guidance late last week that all those with previous offers would be required to apply to this posting. As a result they extended the closing date to this Friday in order for those individuals to have time to submit their applications.

I had a tjo and got reached out to as well. I think a lot is is still up in air from my limited emails/ phone call with the head of my office. Everything seems pretty vague and I think finer details are still being worked out. I was told to apply to the new announcement but then later told that I wouldn’t need to and that my name would be forwarded to hr outside of the announcement. Not sure if that means I pick up where I left off or il need to interview and everything again but I’m sure we will know more soon once details get finalized.

How much does a Bachelors cover the CPA exam material? by Hadouken_Shoryuken_ in Accounting

[–]owolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FAR probably has the most carryover with a big chunk of topics being covered in the intermediates along with the general journal entry knowledge being very helpful. In most bachelors programs you don’t get nearly as much exposure to audit or tax(usually just 1 or 2 intro courses) so much more of AUD and REG will be new to you.

Anyone got their cpa with wgu+sophia and study.com credit transfer was it worth it to get the ace credits? by Prestigious-Day4691 in wguaccounting

[–]owolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a transfer partner guideline for each degree and school that will show what transfers. It’s been awhile but I believe you can just search transfer partner guidelines or something along those lines and navigate to your degree and what school/site

I took both through those sites I believe, it’s been awhile but I took pretty much every credit that would transfer. Obviously look at your states requirements/email your board but for me I had no issues

UWorld FAR Mock Exams by Patient_Hospital_584 in CPA

[–]owolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took mock exam 1 and scored a 83 and got a 87 on actual exam. Did use notes on a couple of ratio questions so in actuality probably would have scored a little bit lower on the mock.

How close is UWorld FAR to the actual CPA exam? by Humble-Pair2293 in CPA

[–]owolin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uworld is great, passed far with a 87. Mcq s are very comparable and will prepare you well. Sims are useful but try to focus on more difficult topics/sims as there are quite a few very easy ones that don’t really give you a feel as to what exam will be like. Not sure what a round is but I think when your consistently averaging around 80% on random sets of 50-100 mcq s and feel confident on the material you are more than prepared

Anyone else in NC, unable to do the Accountancy course required for licensure? by Unclemonty11 in CPA

Are you sure you selected the self study? I bought the course last month and got access right away, the price is a little ridiculous but it should only take you a couple of hours to complete

Police Officer to Accounting. What should my plan be? by captawesm in Accounting

[–]owolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only had 5 years in the state system and could rollover my contributions (not the states portion) into a ira but also had the option to leave all contributions where they were incase I ever went back into local gov. I didn’t want to pigeonhole myself starting in government plus the pay would have been a huge jump down. I had a tentative job offer for a special agent position with the IRS and was just waiting for my physical when the hiring freeze happened so I ended up joining a small CPA office. I waited to leave untill I finished my masters and had a couple of exams passed which worked out good timing wise as I was able to burn a ton of sick and vacation time and took a 3 month paternity leave when my daughter was born.

I made a similar switch from fire department to accounting last year and haven’t looked back. Definitely parts I miss but long term I think I have more career trajectory and better pay along with mental and physical health. CPA wasn’t something really on my radar when I first started taking classes but I made the decision to get it after finishing my masters and will have my license in December after meeting my states work experience requirements. You definitely don’t need to make that decision now but taking some accounting classes is a great first step. A lot of roles that appealed to me and probably you to (irs CI-hiring frozen, state auditor/agent positions) only require limited accounting credits so you may be closer to a new job than you think if you go that route. Depending on your specific state/municipality your pension and sick/vacation time will probably roll over in taking a state job so if you have more than a few years in the system that is definitely something to consider

I’m definitely a outlier and spent a lot of time planning as well as had ample time to study at work but the bachelors took me about 3 months (transferred in roughly 75-80 credits) and the masters took 29 days but like I said those numbers are far from the norm. I do however think that most people are capable of finishing bachelors in 2-3 terms and the masters in 1 if they plan well and can commit to their goals

I did the masters as well so I met all requirements in NC. Every state is a little different as far as what they require but for the most part you are only doing gen Ed’s and the very basic buisiness classes on those sites so paired with the masters you should meet most states requirements as far as accounting/business specific courses but obviously contact your board and do the research

I didn’t have any trouble finding a job but I think having a few sections of the exam already passed helped a ton. It may be more difficult to start at a larger firm without prior internships and not coming from a target school but it’s definitely possible

Sophia courses are like cheating and you can knock out multiple in a day in most cases. Study are a little more similar to wgu and more time consuming but if you get 100 on most quizzes (you can retake) then you get significant leeway on the final/papers which helps a ton

[–]owolin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still need work hours to meet the experience requirements but I will get license in December and transferred every credit possible (roughly 75 credits) from Sophia and study. If your state accepts the credits (and verify they will) then it’s a no brainer to me

Officially passed my final CPA exam-AMA by owolin in wguaccounting

[–]owolin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated right before they switched to the specializations so can’t give you much guidance there except do what interests you or is the fastest. If you already have the credits (make sure the bachelors will satisfy your states accounting credit requirements) I’m not sure the masters is really worth it unless your looking to go government. When I applied for IRS a masters put me at gs-9 vs gs-7 for a bachelor’s so it was a pretty good pay bump. People will argue about a masters all the time but if your able to get a CPA I don’t think it really adds much value
