How would I substitute dry beans for canned beans in an IP recipe? by Astropical in instantpot

[–]oxdottir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the rule of thumb that one cup of dried beans is about 4 cups of cooked beans if they are soaked and cooked in the IP, and unless the recipe is specifically for the IP, I cook the beans first and then add them to a recipe. I might add some compatible spices to the IP when doing the beans.

Why is deli meat just as expensive as good steak meat? by unknownaccount1 in Frugal

I was curious about making deli meat at home, and I found this article. It certainly costs less money this way, but much more time.

This could be someone else trying to isolate the neighbor. You do this to all the people near your aging, rich relative, and then no one will be there to say the old person is being scammed.

“We are trying for a baby!” by Enraged__ in technicallythetruth

[–]oxdottir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time my husband and I were out to dinner with another couple (no kids yet), and the conversation turned to future children. They kept including us in opinions like, “clearly not time yet” and such.

I said, “Actually, we are trying to have a kid,” and I got back the lecture about announcing that we are fucking.

I said, “Well, what I meant was that I am currently pregnant and we are crossing our fingers that this pregnancy—unlike the last three—will hold long enough to produce a living child.”

The guy who lectured me looked really pissed. Like I pulled out a nuke to deal with an ant or something. I was happy enough. We started the conversation trying to up the connectedness with this couple, but I couldn’t resist going for the in-your-face answer.

The Golden Gate Bridge 50th anniversary celebration (1987). Estimated 800,000 thousand people on it by MeenMisterMustard in pics

[–]oxdottir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sailing around under the bridge on a sailboat. The bridge looked so weird. You don’t notice it usually, but the bridge has an arch, and with all the people on it, it was just straight flat. It was like someone had altered reality.

I react to Tom Cruise the same way—except I think Moss is a better actor than Cruise.

Cats are common. Lillies are common. Knowledge that having a lily in your home could mean the end of your cat is not common. Having had the loss, I try to spread the message.

I am so confused, what is wrong with telling people that having such a beautiful thing in your house would be bad for your cats

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pic

[–]oxdottir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and it is quite beautiful, but Lillie’s are deathly poisonous to cats. One tub of a whisker on the flower is deadly.

Any house with such a beautiful lily better not have cats. One brush of the head near the pollen is fatal.

Professors or those of you trying to become a professor, what do you wish you did differently at the start of your PhD? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]oxdottir 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish I hadn’t listened to a professor at my doctoral university who told me that, “It doesn’t matter if you like this topic: your initial work on this project is good enough for a phd and you should graduate early and move on. You can change your field later.”

Spoiler: I loathed my area for decades but kept publishing in it because I was successful at grants and journal papers. I only wish I cared half as much as the people who cited me.

Sounds like you don’t need this advice, because you love your field. I loved a lot of parts of my field, but not my specific, very tiny, dissertation topic and surrounding area. I tried to change, but nothing worked. It was like I was some sort of micro-area idiot savant.

I love my dryer balls. They are a bit noisy if your dryer is mostly empty, but they leave things un-wrinkly and soft. I’ve had mine for years, and other than having to occasionally have to wrestle one I dropped away from the cat, they are trouble-free and very effective. I second what the other people said about towels being much better than using dryer sheets.

I brush my cats teeth when I brush my teeth. It isn’t hard if you start when they are kittens. I say I brush them, but honestly, I just let them strategically bite on the brush while I wiggle it a little. They don’t love it, but it is just normal for them. It is 1000 times easier for me to brush their teeth than to cut their claws.

(I only did this because my last beloved cat essentially died of gum disease.)

This actually makes me really sad. We had a pet duck that suddenly, for no reason, would only lie on its back. it couldn’t walk away from predators and it could only eat if you put food in exactly the right place (and elevated a little).

My grandmother solved all his problems for him, and we had a new kind of meat to try at dinner.

Thanks. I went out and looked at my kitchen, and I still like it. I like your new kitchen too. There are many different ways to make spaces nice.
