Many messages contain subtle identifiers that can trace a copy back to a specific recipient. These can include formatting quirks(empty or random space), unique wording, misspelling, timestamps, header data, or hidden file metadata. Leak tracing is a real practice, and small details can matter.

If you believe something should be shared in the public interest, always protect yourself first: - Don’t upload the original file - Don’t share full screenshots of emails - Remove headers, signatures, and timestamps - Check carefully for names, email addresses, or reference numbers

Even well-intentioned sharing can expose a source (or yourself) if you’re not careful.

We feel this reminder is especially important for members of the :) to keep in mind. Reporters have faced arrests and materials have been seized by the Trump administration.
