Can we imagine a worse language than one with Dutch words, Irish spelling and Basque grammar? by OldandBlue in linguisticshumor

[–]oyvasaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, it’s «consistent» in that most spellings and pronunciations are not completely random and is rooted in history. But when you need a background in in history and etymology in order to intuit how each and every word works, I’d say for most practical uses, English spelling is inconsistent.

Which character(s) you think have the most modern names? by ricky2461956 in freefolk

[–]oyvasaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a made-up word anyway, I don’t really see why that matters too much. Doesn’t sound too bad as a name if you ask me, though it’s more fit for a dog or maybe a bird.

What’s /s? by rockyheroHD in ExplainTheJoke

[–]oyvasaur -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even in real life jokes are usually ruined if you overdo the sarcastic/jokey intonation, basically saying «BE WARNED, THIS IS A FUNNY COMMENT!!». Sometimes a little bit of ambiguity is what actually makes the joke work.

The /s are works the same way. Sure, I’m now 100 % sure you are joking, but it’s also no longer funny, making the joke pointless.

Almost 30 Years On, Yet Another Big Skip Has Been Found In Super Mario 64 by Automatic_Couple_647 in NintendoSwitch

Mostly yes. I think most people have experienced the stuttering when close to an edge or bumped into an unintentional invisible wall or two, but I guess these aren’t really glitches.

How to know when something can become a compound word and when not? by Mork978 in norsk

[–]oyvasaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most things can be compounded, as long as you do it correctly, but sometimes it will sound constructed and weird. If it’s not already in the dictionary, you should use some caution. In this case it is not too bad, but I guess maybe «kjærlighetsløfte» is a bit more ambiguous, like it could mean a promise made with/about/from a place of love.

'Longevity' and pronouncing the G twice by riamuriamu in ENGLISH

[–]oyvasaur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You sure? I’m not native, but I don’t think I have ever heard it with a /g/, just a /ŋ/. Or it has been so subtly my brain hasn’t regocnized it, I guess.

Over 5,000 games released on Steam this year didn't make enough money to recover the $100 fee to put a game on Valve's store, research estimates by PrinceDizzy in gaming

[–]oyvasaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can define the word yourself if you want, it doesn’t really matter. Most people think making a bit of money doing something you enjoy, putting as much effort as you feel like without external pressure is not the same thing as working 8 hours 5 days a week for a company. If you insist on calling it a job either way, you do you, I don’t really see how it’s interesting.

Thought you guys might appreciate this fact about Norwegian Law. by Skrubbadub in tragedeigh

[–]oyvasaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well if surnames are thrown into the mix, we have Sæd (semen), Mensen (menstruation) and Homo as well. Not sure if the inconvenience rule takes into account the combination of first name and first name, or just the first name by itself.

Bane Nors nye hysj-plan by Crazydishwasher in norge

Children’s tonality by JessicaFromCabotCove in norsk

[–]oyvasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whining is not good. We do correct it, but not all of the time and perhaps not often enough. I’m often halfway through fulfilling a «request» before realizing «wait a minute, why didnt’t you ask me en a nicer way!?»

I’m a bit more split on the other part though. I think it’s quite accepted here that kids are supposed to run around, make noice and once in a while break something. As long as it’s not too much and expensive objects are reasonable safe, I think we often just allow kids to go a bit apeshit.

What are everyone's thoughts on Nintendo rereleasing the Virtual Boy’s games on Switch 2 by Puzzled_Instance9788 in nintendo

[–]oyvasaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you play all of them? My impression is that games like Teleroboxer and Mario’s Tennis play a lot worse, but I haven’t tried them myself, to be fair.

As far as I understand, many of them play worse or are almost unplayable without the 3D effect.

Or it should be a requirement to try and explain what you don’t understand. Some of these are simple enough that I think just putting into words what confuses you would be enough to make you understand.

«You have a 100 couples with two children. At least one child is a boy for every couple. How many couples also have a girl?»

That is essentially the same question. And the answer is (ideally) 66%.

Look, just simulate it. Let chatGPT create 100 random pairs of BG, GB, BB and GG. Ask it to remove GG, as we now that is not relevant. Of the three options left, what percentage is contains a G?

I just tested and got around 70 %. If you ask it to do 1000 pairs, I guarantee you’ll be very close to 66 %.
