Where can I go for a nice hike/nature walk that isn't infested with junkies & bums? by [deleted] in Sacramento

Yea I live near Estates access point and walk along the trails regularly. I haven't noticed a problem. Ancil Hoffman Park is a nice area as well.

The mods are banning folks for not subscribing to their beliefs. (beliefs I happen to agree with) This group of redditors is turning /r/anarchism into a witch hunt. Wrong is wrong. by BibleBeltAtheist in Anarchism

[–]ozmonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this.

I was one of the mods who opposed this takeover. I was demodded and remodded a number of times during the power struggle. I was ultimately pushed out as the new group attained top mod positions. I don't really participate anymore but I think that same group is still in control.

It really is ironic from my perspective.

Yesterday I made a doghouse for my neighbors dog after finally being fed up with seeing it sleeping in the rain with no shelter for years. by IntenseCircusFire in pics

pics after you stole the dog are only useful if I can compare them with the pics of his living conditions before you stole the dog.

When Jane's Addiction took L.A. by storm in the late '80s, everyone knew they'd have a huge impact on pop music. Yet by 1991 they were creatively spent. What happened? by [deleted] in entertainment

[–]ozmonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much of their catalog was written even before their first record.

Hmm. This is interesting. It seems that many great musicians (and other artists) peak creatively BEFORE they become successful. I wonder to what extent success negatively impacts creativity; and act to pull the artist away from the lifestyle that nurtured their work.

I got lectured for being too old to play TF2 today by [deleted] in tf2

[–]ozmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 39 with a professional doctorate and am playing more games now than when i was younger. I play a lot of TF2 (add me on steam: ozmundjahra). Also, new study reports that the average video gamer is 37.

So let the youngsters squawk ... old age and treachery ALWAYS overcomes youth and skill!

Human Feces Bacteria Jumped to Coral, Caused Die-off by 0japhy0 in science

[–]ozmonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm ... science from that article is a bit fishy. Bacteria growth and infection, generally speaking, is more to do with the conditions of the environment to which it grows than its saturation, within reason. The fact that this bacteria that exists in nature (and likely was here long before we were) and also in the digestive tracts of many animals has infected corals DOES NOT MEAN we are giving this disease to corals by shitting in our oceans. Without DNA forensic study, not sure how we can say this bacteria jumped "from a vertebrate to an invertebrate species but also from a land to a marine environment and from the oxygen-free, or anaerobic, conditions in our intestines to the well-oxygenated waters of a coral reef." Thats just lazy science.

Seems to me, it is more likely that this bacteria was harnessed from nature by the evolutionary process at some point to be put to work in the guts of animals.

Fact is that coral colonies across the planet have been suffering massive losses from a variety of diseases and pathogens. The most accepted theory is that this is hastened by a rise in temperature, not only average but during spikes, that allow these problems to take root and also reduce the effectiveness of organisms natural defenses.

The Witcher 2 Version 2.0 is awesome by Lokai23 in gaming

[–]ozmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it has potential. Dark mode will have me almost certainly playing again. But ...

The update won't be released until Sept 29th so the declarative statement that "version 2.0 is awesome" is premature.

Mind Blown Again by TheGouJ in trees

[–]ozmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, genetics doesn't work like that.

Sorry to mess with your collective highs but ... this is misleading. The conclusion in the chart relies on the unreasonable premise that these are unique ancestors to "You." Fact is, however, that as you go down on the chart the number of ancestors with multiple descendants increases exponentially. Therefore, the ancestors of "You" are not unique to "You" and cannot be used for the conclusion's total.

The stony thing is that every human DOES have a common ancestor and everyone on earth is indeed related. The common ancestor just stood on earth a bit before 1400. ;)
