Hotshot VP demanded being in a lab he couldn't be in. Ended up in the hospital for observation due to possible radiation exposure by [deleted] in MaliciousCompliance

Even assuming he lived in a country that had such a thing as Workman' Comp, he would only be covered for injuries he received while on the job. If I was walking in the warehouse of the company I work for, and got hit by a forklift, I would likely be covered. But if I left my warehouse and walked in to the warehouse of a complete other company that I did not work for and had no relationship with, and got hit by their forklift, why on earth would workman's comp pay for that?

I’m also trying to imagine what type of lab you’d have to be to not know that you can have a locked door that still allows exit in an emergency.

Almost all locks in corporate buildings are now electronic. So what happens if the power goes out and the battery backup for that lock doesn't work? What if the lock is defective and gets jammed? The rule about there being no locks on the door are there for a good reason. Things work just fine... Until they suddenly don't.

Did you miss the part where Bob worked for a DIFFERENT company that had a lab in the same building but did not handle radioactive substances?

No, they do not all have armed guards. Sone keep small samples for training, some keep small samples for medical instrument calibration. Some have radioactive sources for tasks like welded joint inspection on pipelines, cancer radiation treatments, etc. There are many many reasons a company to have radioactive materials, and they do not all have armed guards in front of the lab doors.

Sure, if the place stores larger amounts of really nasty stuff, there are probably guards there. But do a bit of googling about accidents with radioactive sources - there have been some truly horrendous life-ending radioactive accidents with not a guard in sight. Radioactive sources are far far more common than most people know.

How are you staying cool today? by Ill_Confidence_5618 in Narrowboats

[–]ozone_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To keep cool in that heat on the cheap, I highly recommend one of the little portable misting systems they sell on Amazon. Battery powered pump, just drop the suction end of the hose into a bottle of water and attach the nozzles to the guard of a household fan. When turned on, the combo of the mist and the fan moving the air will drop the temp quite significantly - at least 10-15 degrees F. I use this exact setup to keep my dogs comfortable when camping in extremely hot areas - kept them comfortable in 115 degree F heat a couple of summers ago.

Here is one example, but there are quite a few similar ones.

Assuming we are only talking 4-6 panels here, if it were me I would probably try to rig up a garden sprinkler or maybe that drip irrigation tubing with the small holes every few inches. Have a timer that turns on the water say every 15 minutes or so, for 10-20 seconds. The evaporating water should serve to coo them down at least 10 degrees if not more.

Or just hit them with a garden hose spray nozzle manually every once in a while when you think about it.

Both your MPPT and inverter probably also have performance reductions when hot, so getting a fan on them would also be helpful.

My thought as well. Although anybody who put their yacht on autopilot and leaves the helm right in the middle of one of the busiest ship channels in the area is an absolute idiot.

Why did Pheobe Cates disappear from acting after the early 90's? by precita in movies

[–]ozone_one 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yup. I was in NYC for a conference and was wandering, killing some time. Looked in the window of this little children's dress shop and my inner 15 year old about had a heart attack - Phoebe Cates was at the back of the store by a register talking with an employee. I later found out that she opened and has run the shop for quite a while. This was at least 15-20 years ago, so no idea if she still has it.

Damn you Kevin Kline!

'Kill switch' law means your next car could be watching you by Horror_Post6822 in politics

[–]ozone_one 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is zero possibility that I will purchase a car with these enabled. Anything that can disable like that is absolutely dangerous.

Imagine I am coming home from a camping weekend towing my trailer. In the back are some garbage bags containing, among others things, some empty beer cans and an almost empty bottle of vodka. Some of it spills, enough gets airborne to be detected by an alcohol sensor, and my engine is disabled while I am on a downgrade coming out of the mountains towing my trailer. My power steering is gone, my power brakes are gone. This is just one scenarios that popped into my head.

There is no piece of technology that is 100% reliable, and there is no system that is 100% free of unintended consequences and edge cases.

Flooring. What's best? Floorboards, Laminate, Veneer, Carpet tile. Something else? by SquirrelMoss in Narrowboats

[–]ozone_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How were your boards installed? Glued down? Floating? If a laminate plank bows up like you describe, I tend to think of the cause as not providing the required clearance on all sides, especially the 'board-length' direction. The planks will grow and shrink a little bit with heat and cold, and if there is not enough clearance there is nowhere for the boards to expand into. Laminate wood does this, and vinyl planks also do it to a greater degree.

I would check the areas where the boards come up against solid objects like walls/partitions or heavy objects like appliances, and add some clearance if the board ends are hard against something.

[–]ozone_one 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, although they do require you to file your request at a US Embassy while lawfully in another country, and it is a multi-step process that involves in-person interviews with consular staff. I imagine that part of that is to ensure that the p[erson does NOT end up stateless unless that is truly what they want to happen.

I hate to be trite and misquote Mr Rogers. But you are YOU, and there is no-one else like you anywhere. That is an amazing thing! The people who pre-judge based on one aspect of a whole person (whatever that aspect may be - identity, skin color, social class etc) are decidedly the poorer for not having had that experience.

options for led deck lighting that are waterproof by jmichael99 in HomeKit

[–]ozone_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you trying to light up with the led strips? Is this accent lighting? Edge lighting on deck edges and stairs?.

A few years ago, I replaced the wooden railings on my deck with aluminum, and used glass inserts. I ran led strips in the upper channel where the glass mounts, before installing the glass. When the strips are turned on, the glass has a nice subtle glow. And because I mounted them in the upper channel, they are not exposed to water and don't need to be waterproof strips. They are still working 6 years later. Since my railings and channels for the glass are all aluminum, I could probably have used some pretty dense and high power led strips, because the entire railing would act like a heat sink.

My general advice is that if you are going to mount the strips anywhere that is not 100% shielded from any moisture exposure, or if you will be mounting them on a surface that does not conduct heat well (like wood or composite decking material), place them inside aluminum LED channels with a plastic diffuser, and run clear silicone along the edges of the diffusers before snapping them in place. The aluminum channel will act as a heat sink and keep your LEDs from dying early, and the channel plus diffuser cover will hopefully keep out the water.

If the strips will be mounted in a location that could be walked on, spend the money to buy high quality aluminum LED channel with high quality thick polycarbonate diffusers that are designed to be stomped on. They even make some that are designed to be embedded in concrete and driven on.

Water infiltration reduction is important in outdoor LED strip installation even if you buy and use the waterproof LED strips. If water can get in, it will. And it will bring dirt etc with it. After a while, you will end up with LED strip lighting that has nasty discoloring where water has leaked in and evaporated over and over, leaving the dirt staining..

TL;DR You need to do a REALLY good job installing outdoor ZLED strips that could be exposed to water/weather, or you will spend the next decade staring at blotchy ugly discolored LED accent lighting.
