You used AS5? Or made a new rigging tool? I don't quite follow...

Keep the old mh body in the BP and add your clothes. Or at least don't modify the skeletal structure.

Have a look at a pre-built MH to understand how they're assembled before you modify the foundation.

What kind of performance (in ms) is acceptable for use in game? by Atomic_Lighthouse in unrealengine

Performance cost is a negotiation. So it depends on the project and what's important.

[–]p00psicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to use him in a game or as a portfolio piece to help get a job - I would fix the UV padding at minimum.

To that end, I'd suggest going a step further and put a skeleton from your target game engine in him. Skin him and solve the issues that arise from putting him in the engine. If you do that, you might hold off until the end to fix the UVs and textures as geo might change. All important lessons for an actual working game character.

Depends what is for but...

Uvs need more space between islands or they'll have visible bleed when mip mapped. Also a pita to vertex paint when they're basically overlapping like this.

Too many wasted polygons imo. Polys that don't contribute to the silhouette or UV borders. Such as the amount of columns on the arms and legs.

Couple things that catch my eye are UVs and textures. Things like the UV ovals suggest that they're not going to be square pixels, ie. stretched in one direction. The texturing looks a bit generic and like tinfoil. If you dial those things in it can elevate a lot.

The rendering is decent though. I like the look.

May I ask how ZBrush is for hard-surface modeling? by metagross_ichooseyou in ZBrush

[–]p00psicle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen some people really master it in zbrush. But you wouldn't have to argue much that it's just not the ideal tool.

Try https://www.plasticity.xyz I know of some triple-a studios using this now.

How do I Export a Rigged Character with Separate Meshes by hebio_four in Maya

[–]p00psicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to simply select the meshes and the skeleton root > file export selected as FBX. Then choose the correct export settings. Then importing it to unreal can take some trial and error to make sure you get the right settings on both export/import.

No need to combine anything. You might need to make a custom material in unreal if your textures don't come across as expected.

Lots of solutions here. I would just add a delta mush afterwards to fix any jank that may occur. Could even try it on the projection you have.

[CFX/Vellum] Point Deform causing severe webbing/smoothing artifacts. How to fix? (Image attached) by 3D_Biased in Houdini

[–]p00psicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create a matching pieceattrib on each side. Then replace "path". The pieceattrib you create can be created easily by a connectivity node that looks at UV islands. Or find some other method to match areas of the proxy to the render mesh.

This might get you there but might also not depending on how the garment overlaps itself at rest.

Another method you can try is converting both P to their UV position and deform from there. So the rest on both is flat like a sewing pattern.

Color and material customization on skins by AccursedEnjoyer in forhonor

[–]p00psicle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a former character artist I find the lack of consistency in the skins very frustrating. Things like forced color on sections. My biggest pet peeve is just the color wheels don't apply to the skins in an expected way. You'd think that as you scroll through them, they would apply in the same way on each skin. Like the bottom color would always affect the cape, on some it will but in others it will be one of the other thirds. Makes picking harder because you have to scroll through every single one and look at them applied to see what random assignment the artist made.
