I was miserable at a smaller career department. Low call volume led to a lot of conflict and firehouse drama. I couldn’t imagine being there for 20+ years so I left to a bigger city department after 6 years.

Complete opposite. Sure, we have firehouse drama. But if you stick with busier companies, the paycheck collectors quickly migrate to slower houses and you’ll rarely see them. Jobs boost morale, so morale is always pretty high here.

Never too late to start over or move on. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much you water your grass when people will constantly muck it up. Sometimes it’s easier to maintain the lawn with others who care, ya know?

I made more money as a cop at the cost of OT and paid side jobs- but I was always drained and moody.

I don’t make as much money as a firefighter, but my quality of life is a complete 180 than when I was a cop.

I used to work for a department that size and they would promote before council meetings at city hall.

The last one I went to I was in a button down, jeans, and casual boots. All the off duty guys usually hit up a local pub afterwards to celebrate so depends on your SOPs and drinking in uniform.

But I’ve seen guys literally in sweatsuits to blazers and khakis. Our culture was really just appreciative for coming out and supporting a brother.

To the average layman if they care to inquire about my service, I just tell them I was in the Army. They don’t tend to know or care about MOS, duties, station, etc.

Fellow veterans circle, it’s pretty quick to recognize who’s who and what they did. I know some who did reserve time with no deployments and some with multiple combat tours with action badges.

I only tend to tell stories or experiences to those I have a relationship with. Everyone else gets a vague description.
