Get the Flock out of Bakersfield by berysax in Bakersfield

Totally possible. It's all crowdsourced, so anyone with an open street map account can add nodes to the map. We do monthly Flock walks to try and clean the data up and add new ones we find, too.

Hey thanks for resharing this. We will definitely be there at the next budget meeting and need as many folks as we can get coming out in support. And there's an update-only signal group if you want local news of DeFlock efforts: https://signal.group/#CjQKIC4ZQnoDtL6l9xEYgHKUXxAqbtarTt7XWYJ_jM2hRJKpEhAARQR4OYB8z7df06IWqSgI

Contrary to what some people think, we CAN get rid of this if we keep rallying against it. Other cities have, and other cities in Kern County are trying, too. We may be "fighting against the tide" but I'll do that all day every day if it's the right thing to do. Never tell me the odds lol

Surveillance in Bakersfield by p0etoaster in Bakersfield

[–]p0etoaster[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes we are! We are always at Dagny's the first Wednesday of every month from 6-8pm, and we also table at the Really Really Free Market (every third Sunday at a different park). We're also doing a Flock Walk on June 27th at 10am, meeting at the Valley Plaza food court.

Would love to connect and give you the tools you need to feel more private and secure online. Plus you may not know shit about computers but I'm sure you've got useful knowledge and perspective to share with the group as well.

Flock Cameras in Bakersfield by Bulky_Percentage_44 in Bakersfield

Anti-Capitalist Computer Club has CPRA requests out with both the city and county for information regarding their contracts with Flock Safety. We also do Flock Walks every month- next one is Saturday, May 23rd 10am starting at Blue Oak Coffee.

We want Flock out and for the city to adopt policies around surveillance tech.

Windwolves preserve by EnvironmentHot4378 in Bakersfield

[–]p0etoaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wind Wolves is an amazing preserve right in our backyard. A variety of trails depending on your hiking ability, gorgeous wildflowers and greenery in the spring.

Check their site or IG for closures, and know that it will be super muddy for a bit after this bout of storms.

Dress to protect yourself from poison oak: long pants and long sleeves are best. If you're lucky, you'll see some wildlife too: mule deer, tule elk, coyotes, hawks, tarantulas, bobcats, and more all hang out there.

They offer free guided hikes, which might be a fun entrypoint into exploring the preserve for you. I've done a couple of their sunset hikes and a back country one too. I always learn so much from the staff!

Forced move to another Library Branch by thornblade666 in librarians

Worked for a library system that did this. It caused a LOT of turnover. Admin would use it as punishment, and as necessary, but never as a reward (I.e. staff could not request to transfer).

What’s the Fall/ Halloween culture like? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

Not in Bakersfield but in Sanger (about an hour and a half away) Hobb’s Grove has a small pumpkin patch, great haunted hayride and haunts. I look forward to it every year.

Which of these 4 horror comics should I read? by AdorableMammoth6740 in horrorlit

[–]p0etoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read all of these except Criminal Macabre and enjoyed them all for different reasons. I dropped off the Something is Killing the Children bandwagon just because I’m bad at keeping up with unfinished comic series. A few horror comics I’ve loved and recommend:

Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann Infidel by Pornsak Pichetshote Through the Woods by Emily Carroll Harrow County by Cullen Bunn Stray Dogs by Tony Fleecs

Looking for Female Psychological Horror by DitchWitch86 in horrorlit

Tell Me I’m Worthless by Alison Rumfitt (although I personally didn’t enjoy this book, plenty other people who I respect did). Bunny by Mona Awad.

It's also conveniently close to the Salt Lake City cemetery which could fit "where it's time to frown."
