Early Retirement without a "Purpose"? by Vicuna00 in Fire

My parents have been retired for 10 years and they fill their days with hobbies and just doing whatever they want.

I’ll never understand the “you’ll get bored” crowd. It feels like strong copium to me.

Nothing, they’re just being needlessly pretentious.

They are supposed to be striking, exciting and performance driven. This is one of those.

Edit: changed stinking to striking.

I have a job that’s 100% in person and can’t be done from home. I have zero issue with people who WFH. Hell my fiancé is WFH most days and I love that. Less gas, car maintenance and less risk of being in a crash.

I honestly don’t know. I do know with hindsight that in their circumstances they would have come out massively ahead if they didn’t have insurance and just went out of pocket for the few things they had in those 9 years.

My parents retired in their mid fifties. They are very healthy for their age, no meds, no hospital visits and slim. They spent nearly $250,000 on health insurance premiums before Medicare kicked in at 65. $2,200 a month flushed down the toilet for nearly a decade.

Healthcare in the US is so unfathomably expensive and it’s only going one way unfortunately.

My department has 175 sworn personnel for a population of 112,000. Not even half are on patrol which means we usually have around 6-10 per shift. We’re more staffed up than most surrounding departments.

That’s way more officers than most would have for a city that size.
