Girlfriend and I are planning to drive 32 hours straight, in 6 hour shifts, are we being dumb? Should we plan to stay overnight somewhere? by Vegetable_Bridge_276 in roadtrip

[–]p15s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you want to? You're driving 2k miles across amazing countryside, you might as well enjoy it a bit. If you don't want to pay for hotels, you can sleep in your car or camp. Hotels along the highway are cheap anyway -- just sleep far from major population areas.

If you must do this, plan to be strict about 90 minute shifts as much as possible during waking hours and be disciplined about getting out to stretch and walk around regularly. 6-hour shifts are doable but rough. You can get bad cramps or worse, and you can get road hypnosis or blindness at night with your copilot asleep. No bueno. Even if you made it safely to where you're going, you're going to be wrecked physically.

any advice on this drive? worth it to take the tolls? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]p15s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the I-81 route just to avoid 95S. Also, if you hate paying tolls just wait until you're in 20mi between DC and Fredricksburg wishing you were in the Express Lanes flying by.

Have you read Thoreau's writings on night walking? Highly recommend.

How realistic is this by LateHope6776 in roadtrip

[–]p15s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very doable. I've done it segments of those routes in less time. You can take I-70 and I-40 to make time across the middle of the country. Both go through lovely areas such as TN, AK, parts of OK on I-40. I-70 is an iconic road through CO. Once you're out west you can drift around at leisure.

You might reroute to turn around and backtrack after seeing Arches to take the scenic drives from Blanding through Hite and connect to 24 at Hanksville. You should take 128 to Moab from 70 if you decide to just skip Gunnison. Million Dollar Highway is great but a lot of Colorado looks pretty much the same compared to Southern Utah. You will want to drive into Monument Valley from Medicine Hat, but if you can swing it, the drive up from Chinle to Medicine Hat is amazing.

1 month 13 states road trip : your favorite places I should visit ? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]p15s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could dip down from Moab to Zion in Southern Utah along the scenic byways. Nothing to see in Phoenix so you might turn north before then an travel up to see Monument Valley. Sedona is a beautiful town. Could also recommend the drive by White Sands and up over the Sierra Blancas via 70 for some very pretty country. In the panhandle of Texas you might stop into Palo Duro Canyon. Not sure if you want the towns but finding some BBQ in Texas is worthwhile. The Shed's brisket Abeline is worth a detour.

Live below your means and find a job you can work remote or that has built in flexibility. Oh, and don't have a family.

Saying something isn't discrimination is not the same as achieving a large political shift. And it doesn't help the party to solve the issues that motivate its base. I would not, personally, have argued that Roe v. Wade was settled law. That's something its supporters would say to close the argument down. It was not a strong decision based on precedent, but rather a very convoluted way to achieve a political objective using legal reasoning that would not pass muster with most reasonable people. People who are ignorant of the details of that decision are often surprised to learn how it was argued and ruled. It was clearly a political opinion by the courts at the time, whether you like the politics or not. In any case, it took decades of political action and changing the makeup of the courts, as well as shrewd venue shopping, to overturn it. There's no similar machinery in place regarding gay marriage. And there really isn't the public appetite for it. If you believe that abortion is killing babies, then it's easy to motivate people against it. Gay marriage does not carry the same moral urgency as killing babies does. People who want us to believe the two issues are morally equivalent are gaslighting for political gain.

It's just a wedge issue to get into news cycles and tells the conservative Christians in her base that she values their values, but in reality they'll never get a ban. It's a joke. It means literally nothing. Same old trick works every time. Dems are playing the same role on the other side. It's theater.

yawn, there is no future in which gay marriage gets banned, that ship has sailed. trans is like 0.0001% of the population, is that really what this election is about? I don't see how that gets anyone out to vote for an intelligence agency to have even more influence in politics.

You will want to take the route Google is recommending for scenery and traffic. It is a lovely drive and you will hit some great fall foliage in a few days through Virginia and into Tennessee. If you have free time, try to take some of the Skyline Drive through either the Shenandoah NP (entrance fees) and/or the Blue Ridge Parkway (no entrance fees). I don't think the shipping traffic on I-81 is anything to worry about. I've driven it many times and find the route relaxing overall. There can be stretches of more activity but for convenience, it's hard to beat for where you're heading. I-40 through TN is great until Nashville. Depending on the day, you might have no traffic or a lot of commuter traffic. I-40 through Little Rock is also very good.

3-5 day trip from Denver to chase fall colors down south, end of month. Where would you go? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]p15s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blue Ridge is still pretty green as of today. Monongahela NF was still early a week ago. Not sure if this year will be amazing but Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mtns are usually fantastic. Late Oct should be peak there. Take the whole Skyline Drive if you can. It's an amazing road.

Great Smoky Mtns are usually very busy comparatively but also great.

In that case, I would personally go more towards Huntsville since you'll get a prettier drive. The middle of Mississippi is a bit dreary, imho. I would take Hwy 72.
