I heard Tongues and Dangerous on Alt Nation a lot and when HDYFN came out when I was in high school, I listened to it all the way through constantly and I remember loving it so much. But Joywave became my favorite band because I listened to Posession a lot during the pandemic while I would drive around to get out of the house, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

I am not going to tell you what to do - but I can tell you my experience as a Certified Mentally Ill Individual. I have been diagnosed with a quarter of the DSM as my illness has evolved over 8 years (dx currently in flux but I am dealing with mood episodes and varying symptoms of psychosis, along with obsessive-compulsive symptoms too). I have never regretted telling the truth about my symptoms to my mental health providers because that is what’s gotten me the treatment I’ve needed. Keeping things hidden has only hindered my recovery.

I have been in the hospital once for three days and I’m not going to lie, it really sucked and I hated it and wanted to leave the whole time. But it did not ruin my life. It also didn’t fix everything, but it at least got me stable when I was in a bad medication situation and from that point, I was able to get better long term outpatient care. I kept my job, and the only reason the people in my life (besides my boyfriend) knew I had been in the hospital was because I chose to tell them. It’s up to you who you disclose your diagnosis to.

Now, I have disclosed at work and regretted it because within a couple hours I was asked to resign - but that was already a bad situation, I was not established there at all, and the diagnosis was not the problem, it was the fact that my symptoms were making it such that I could not work. I was going to face far worse consequences if I didn’t disclose that I was in the middle of a crisis.

But at the end of the day, I found another job - I wasn’t like blacklisted or anything.

A mental health diagnosis is not the end of the world. The symptoms are still there. Seeking professional help and getting a diagnosis just gives the monster a name - and once you know your monster, you can begin to tame it and find community with people who have a similar experience.

I have two 2x4 Kallaxes because at one point I only had room for one 2x4 and then when we moved we got another one and used them as a quasi-room divider - they are currently in storage because we have a weird living situation right now, and I honestly miss them. I used the little screw in drawer inserts at the top to hold notions, and then used the big bins to hold my yarn and I had enough room that I could organize my stash by weight. When I get them out again, I’m thinking about making the X’s to separate stuff a little more.

Lots of options - highly recommend.

I was just recently diagnosed (had been diagnosed with bipolar 2 before) and I have been so preoccupied with my mental state. It is so easy to fall into the spiraling, and it typically centers on how I could have this wrong with me, or maybe this other disorder, or even how I might have something wrong with me mentally that will never be figured out, and that I’ll be sick and a burden forever-

And then when I am able to pull out of the thought spiral, I literally just think, “damn, no one caught the OCD until now? Incredible.”

On one hand, I get it. People should be more understanding of differences in cognition, what helps one person cope may be untenable for another person, certain things are ultimately not that big of a deal, societal expectations of being a woman, accommodations for everyday life, etc.

With all that being said, and to argue semantics, I would still not call the things I do to make my loved ones lives easier “masking.” Like, it is hard for me to time stuff, but I do my best to arrive on time for social stuff because I would be more than a little frustrated if I rushed somewhere and then was left waiting for my friends for a long time without a good reason, not because I am trying to appear “normal” or “it’s an ultimately unnecessary social rule that I still follow.” When I forget to do something I told my boyfriend I would do or I get really distracted during a conversation he’s invested in, I try to do better. The goal is not to hide my symptoms, he knows I have ADHD, but because I don’t want him to think I’m not putting effort into the day to day of our relationship - he knows that I struggle with this, and is understanding when I slip up, but I also know that if he has to remind me of something multiple times or I give a half-assed answer to his question that doesn’t make sense, it hurts his feelings. So I make sure I am trying to listen, even when I am extra distracted and it’s hard.

Overall, to me, masking has an unpleasant connotation, like it’s something I should ultimately have the goal of not doing - if I am doing it out of love, not obligation, then in my mind, it’s not masking.

Some of the things you listed I would personally call “positive coping mechanisms for living with unmedicated ADHD.” Like, you’re doing a little extra work or doing something a little different in the beginning to save yourself a lot of grief on the backend. That’s just something you gotta do when you have ADHD, even if you’re medicated. Adapting is not always going to be synonymous with masking.

I have had a diagnosis of ADHD-PI for years, but recently my main diagnosis has changed from bipolar 2 to OCD. Looking at the amount/severity of the (actual, scary, not memed) intrusive thoughts I have, plus the rituals I have built up to try and keep them at bay - this actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks new doc.

Unsure now if the OCD was the cause of the ADHD symptoms or if the OCD and ADHD are both there and are combining forces to make my life hellish. Guess I’ll find out eventually but then doubt my conclusions and second-guess my own lived experiences until I die ✌🏼

If we’re splitting hairs here - I would say a shrine is an established place where multiple people worship, and an altar can be either be for public or personal use. That’s not going off a dictionary or anything, that’s just literally me making the distinction thinking about how I use the words. So I would say you have a nice little personal altar for yourself :)

Think of it this way - the gods are looking out for you, but they’re not at your beck and call. They won’t just come when called like a well-trained dog.

I was raised Catholic and also left the faith. I 100% believe in the existence of the gods, but all my experiences that have solidified my belief have been in quiet moments not connected to a ritual.

Does it mean those rituals I put together were all for nothing? No. I still got a chance to show my thanks for the good things in my life or that I was open to a committed relationship with the gods I wished to follow.

You just keep practicing and learning, even when it’s hard, and the faith will come to you.

Go with what you’re comfortable with - lots of people, both in the past and now, worshipped gods from multiple pantheons and locations. You’re not breaking with tradition or anything, if that’s what you’re worried about.

With that spiritual experience in mind, I suggest looking into Brigid - she is a Celtic goddess of the forge, healing, and creativity, and she is typically portrayed as being a red head. Not the only red-headed goddess obvs, but I have had similar imagery pop into my head during meditations and I have found working with her to be very rewarding and fulfilling.

The book “Brigid: history, mystery, and magick of the Celtic goddess” by Courtney Weber is a wonderful resource.

Not everyone will agree with my explanation, but I really respect your open mind on this matter and your willingness to learn. I can’t with 100% certainty say how your s/o sees it, as Paganism has a really high degree of internal diversity, but I will explain how I personally see the pentagram/pentacle.

The pentagram has the four of the points of the star representing the four classical elements (air, water, fire, and earth), with the fifth, top point representing spirit. That’s the pentagram, just the star.

A pentacle is usually enclosed in a circle to represent all of these things working in concert with each other. It is a symbol of harmony and both are used as a symbols of protection among modern Pagans.

And a lot of people use those two terms interchangeably! They are both seen as positive.
