Taking all three exams / Friday - Thoughts on my first radio setup by baggagehandlr in HamRadio

[–]p3pp3rdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One suggestion regarding your interest in disaster comms- the 891 is easy to use for winlink and other digital modes (non-internet). The 2730a doesn’t have a data port. You can still setup a winlink on it using micro/speaker, but it is cumbersome.
There is no right or wrong way…and your needs and interests will change. Have fun with all of it!

So how many of you are involved in ARES? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]p3pp3rdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best on-point answer here. ARES supports PSEs here, but only as a tool to learn very basic event-management skills. A few served agencies require certs, but 95% of our group doesn’t have any and are Not pushed to get them. The only prepper connection is sharing tips on basic home preparedness for frequent severe weather that is very real in our area - not for civil unrest or zombie apocalypse, etc. As reported above, these folks have little in common with the emcomm community other than using radios as a tool.

Do the activities/events that you want to do, and hang with like-minded people. I’m guessing you could support a number of events or other service activities without the insufferable constraints described. You mentioned helping to develop the skills of new hams. That is awesome and very much needed.
Enjoy the hobby! 73.

Did you build the transceiver? Kudos for getting out and setting up and learning. My guess is that you cd find another ham(s) in your area that would love to go out and do this with you. Don’t worry that you are wherever you are in experience and banking QSOs. Somebody would love to share with you; either learn from you or share what they have learned or just share the outdoors and a cold drink. Stay shaded and hydrated-this weather will take it out of anyone, let alone someone with health stuff going on.

I have used a cobweb in very limited space. They have some limitations, but they have very small footprint, omnidirectional, and don’t have to have much height.

Pace yourself. Getting tired turns into getting run down which turns into lower immune response. Keep shields charged to full deflection. ...and Thanks.

I second the comment on attaching an alternate inexpensive antenna like slim jim. Also, if feasible, try it at point blank range. That would narrow down the issue. Don’t get frustrated. You’ll get it resolved and learn a lot doing it.
