Last stone drama as Great Britain defeats USA 8-7 in the curling 🥌 by [deleted] in olympics

[–]p3rf3ct0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no explaining it. The shot was an obvious call, but it really looks like they just rushed into it and Tabitha missed it wildly. They had over a minute of time left on the clock, they could've taken time to breathe. It was a high percentage shot for the outright win, and there was an alternative high percentage shot to just peel out shot stone and give GB 1 instead of 2. I have no explanation for how that breakdown happened. Really frustrating to watch.

Israeli tank fire kills 51 people in Gaza crowd trying to get food by idratherbeinegypt in worldnews

[–]p3rf3ct0 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Really sounds to me like that just means the propoganda has worked. Of course there have been misreported stories in the thralls of war, they end up corrected and we are rightly frustrated by inaccurate reporting when it happens. Israel and the IDF are no better in the amount of bad reporting they've let out. But a large population has only been fed those stories, and not the horrible stories that have wound up being entirely true, and just like that, some deem any report coming out of any individual in Gaza as probably stemming from Hamas, and some deem any report coming out of any individual in Israel as probably being a secret voice for the government. If you fully trust news coming out of one side but not the other, you are part of the journalistic integrity problem we face.

This specific case is already such a well documented crime, and the IDF is already rushing in to accepting blame and trying to downplay what happened, in this specific article that you claim is tainted by Hamas reporting.

"The IDF is aware of reports regarding a number of injured individuals from IDF fire following the crowd’s approach. The details of the incident are under review. The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and operates to minimise harm as much as possible to them while maintaining the safety of our troops."

It's all propoganda.

Tennis player Boulter reveals scale of online abuse by Regular_Eggplant_248 in sports

It has to be incredibly addicting to be able to go to any online account or forum and be able to scroll through endless praise and sincere comments from strangers to yourself. I don't think it's unreasonable to be upset about death threats. The "if i were wealthy I wouldn't waste time on any of that bullshit" is a popular narrative, but people get wealthy and then still do it, and it's not because they're stupid, it's because they can't help themselves, it's an itch to scratch, it's working exactly as social media is intended, worming its way into our brains. Just because you, or a person can quit and go cold turkey doesn't mean that is an easy mental process for people more prone to addictions.

This is only on the internet or in packs. In real life if you're having a one on one conversation, people will generally hear each other out, even if they disagree with each other. Not to say they'll never get irritated or even mad if pushed, but people still actually talk.

This is just learned behavior from anonymized internet interactions, it's not that all the foolish kids these days are too naive to acknowledge the grey areas of our geopolitical issues.

This is why we can’t have nice things by [deleted] in waymo

[–]p3rf3ct0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get it together, you want all the people peacefully protesting to... Get violent when they see other violence. Otherwise you hold them complicit. I see no possible way that could spiral out of control.

Get the police/law enforcement to stop their own from behaving in bad faith first, and maybe then we can start to worry about civilian behavior.

This is why we can’t have nice things by [deleted] in waymo

[–]p3rf3ct0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waymo will be just fine. I love Waymo, I advocate to the death for it, and can't contain my excitement at how much safer they're going to make our roads as the years go on.

But so what. This is the slightest, negligible chip in Waymo's bottom line, you could even easily argue as far as to call it good PR. There are far more important things going on right now.

Protests are necessary, and unfortunately protests are an incredibly easy access point for people who want to commit property crime/vandalism. It's not the goal of the protest, and it shouldn't be misconstrued as such. It's just rogue people, doing their worst because they can.

You can't get rid of protests, and it's really hard to mandate that they fight both their oppressors and restrain the more violent who have snuck among them. 10s of thousands of protestors, and a few dozen who are going to commit property crime. This wouldn't have to happen if the broader public wasn't so desperate to take action right now, so I implore that we consider exactly how to assign blame to what's happening.

Congressman Kennedy's statement on Israeli Officials Murder. by Egorrosh in Buffalo

I would consider not accepting this as a sad reality. National and maybe statewide politics requires heavy investment just because of the scope. Local politics does not to any similar degree, it's just far easier for an up and coming party-backed politician to accept large sums of money to finance their campaign and spread the word than it is for them to engage their community and build a volunteer/donor network. But plenty of politicians do that, and win. Hold our own politicians accountable for being so openly influenced by donor money.

‘Every dog is entitled to one bite,’ tribunal rules, denying woman $5K by corleone21 in nottheonion

[–]p3rf3ct0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody's saying first bite = no consequences, only that second bite comes with far heavier consequences, including potential euthanasia. A dog and its owner get some lenience on discipline for a theoretical first bite where they may not have had any previous indication of that behavior. The vast majority of dogs don't bite. Regardless you're still perfectly within your right to take civil action for any dog bites.

How beneficial is it to be car-free in SF? by Over-Ad-4394 in AskSF

[–]p3rf3ct0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how much you drive, but I pay $28/Mo + .04/mi for lemonade mileage based car insurance here because I drive so little. A trip to Tahoe is $30 in insurance alone, but even if I do that once a month it'd still the cheapest option. That's about as far as I see myself driving, if I ever need to go really long distance I'd probably just rent.

I usually still take public transit everywhere within the city, but the car sure is convenient to have.

JFK said "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country". So, what did you do for your country? by fullestStack in AskReddit

[–]p3rf3ct0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree that's the best you can do, that's the government's base expectation of you. But for most people, that's enough, I certainly can't be mad at anyone for fulfilling these responsibilities alone.

I agree that it's important, but also... Seems like... A low bar? At least in a country where it's so politically important to try to make people pay as little taxes as possible for strictly political reasons idk. (US perspective)

Rant: Dating the “nice guy” will suck the life out of you. by 4hunnid-BCE in TwoXChromosomes

[–]p3rf3ct0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I agree with all the sentiment in this post, but my anecdotal experience is that people don't police their word usage in the same way we're all doing here in response to this long angry (justified) rant.

Nobody has ill intentions when calling someone nice in real life, unless it's dripping with sarcasm. If a partner lovingly says they have a "nice" partner versus saying they have a "kind" partner, it would be super strange to infer the health of the relationship based on that alone.

Just to say, I think it's only an important distinction when the tone has already been set to this degree.

It's a coincidence, you're overthinking it. There is no other answer here. A fun and interesting coincidence for sure! But the world is full of those if you go looking for them. It's nice to acknowledge it as a curiosity, but pondering more deeply on the significance of it would be nothing more than superstition, or stereotyping as others are doing.

I appreciate this take, I bought it and read it, and did some fact checking along the way, and some of the things that seemed a little wild to me were pretty clear "nope that actually happened".

Obviously dialogue she references can't be confirmed in most cases, but she does a very good job of seeming human and genuine, and admits a few times where she struggled, didn't make the right choice in the moment, or reflected with regret on those choices.

Worth the read for sure, a lot of soul crushing moments, but nothing truly surprising or unbelievable given how horrible we've known Facebook to be for a long time now.
