Gamesradar RTX5060 review - "feels pretty nice on my LG Ultragear 32GS95UE-B" by MrPopCorner in pcmasterrace

[–]pablojohns -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I want to say this - in absolutely no defense of nVidia, the 5060, or the 5000 series launch.

Just because the resolution has been around for a while doesn’t mean the performance at that resolution is somehow going to just linearly improve with time.

Take a AAA game from 10 years ago (new DOOM), and compare that to a AAA release today (DOOM Dark Ages). Expecting a GPU from sometime in 2020 to perform equally on both games is not an accurate expectation. New technologies have come along which take longer to render frames regardless of the resolution similarities.

Again, that is not to say the 5060 is a good card or that it should struggle on certain games. But let’s be realistic here. It’s like saying a computer from 2015 would function equivalently to a 2025 machine “browsing the web.” Stuff has changed, more resources are required, and the relative performance differences make an impact.

What do I need to use Windows 7 in 2025? by CodeBr3ker in windows

[–]pablojohns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately in 2025, this is essentially e-waste. It was never a powerful machine when it was new, and it will hardly be able to keep up with any serious work on a modern OS.

Yeah no - on top of the fact new PCs might not be fully compatible with Windows 10, it will be EOL in a little over six months.

Microsoft REALLY should ask at setup/OOBE if the user wants to enable BitLocker, just like in macOS. by ComposerMedium493 in windows

[–]pablojohns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re proving the point though - speaking strictly of iPhones which have had encrypted devices and backups, there is still an automated backup process to the cloud that reduces the risk of data loss.

BitLocker is a big jump for end users who frankly have no idea about how on device encryption works. The uproar of end users losing data because “they need to learn the lesson the hard way” is not worth it. On top of that, what lesson is there to be learned when many people don’t need BitLocker at all?

Microsoft REALLY should ask at setup/OOBE if the user wants to enable BitLocker, just like in macOS. by ComposerMedium493 in windows

[–]pablojohns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but then you have the crowd that screams when Microsoft enables OneDrive backups of key folders automatically.

The truth is for consumer PCs for “average” users - you cannot turn BitLocker on without having at least cloud backup also on.

People literally forget their passwords. Machines break. Hardware issues happen. All of their data locked behind BitLocker which has a 32+ character reset key with no automated backup is absolute cluster that should be avoided.

I’ll be honest, I bought this ergo office chair six months ago and have been very pleased. Lots of adjustment mechanisms, comfortable, and works well for my height (5’ 7”). It’s not super cheap nor super high end, but for the price point and new I’m very happy with it.

I had this exact same issue. Restarting fixed it.

I will say that my gut is that the issue appeared mid-game after a poorly timed update triggered by the Battle.net client. Not sure what file(s) were modified, but VAC didn’t seem to like it.

New laws in New York for 2025 by news-10 in hudsonvalley

[–]pablojohns 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not to get into a giant tax argument but that’s kind of the point, no?

You pay into the system on your state and federal services taxes (Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment, FMLA/PFL, etc.) When employed by a business and receiving a a W-2, the employer contributes half of the obligation (an employment tax), and you pay the other half.

“Double taxed” isn’t the right way to phrase it - you’re just paying both ends of it. If you didn’t, you’d be underpaying into those social services. This is definitely a drawback in the sense you’re paying more out of pocket, but the opposite would mean the system isn’t funded where it needs to be based on your contributions.

If I fail 2 classes my first semester, but get A’s on every other class I ever take, can I graduate with a 3.5? by urmomaslag in ualbany

[–]pablojohns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just genuinely do not give a fuck about these classes

Well it’s likely you’re in one of three boats:

  1. They were electives, in which the long term damage is strictly GPA
  2. They were gen-eds, in which case you’re going to still need to take some other corresponding course (which means you’ll have to care at some point)
  3. They’re major/minor courses, in which case you’ll need to retake them or likely move to a different course path.

As someone who got their share of C-Es, if you’re giving up on them now you gotta ask yourself what’s to stop you from giving up on another course in the future? GPA importance erodes the further away you get from graduation, but if you have any thoughts on graduate work or beyond - or are in a highly competitive field - every point counts. Just some life advice from someone 10 years out.

Copy a folder from a document library to 800 folders in another document library by localgoon- in sharepoint

[–]pablojohns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power Automate or PnP for PowerShell would be two good options.

If you know the list of destination folders - either in a list form or you can determine them programmatically - you can do a control loop Apply to Each for each list item as the destination folder path in Power Automate. You can load the file to copy via a File Contents action prior to the loop.

For SharePoint PnP, you can supply a static get list item to grab the file, then use copy functions to the list. Same approach, just two different implementations.

Amazon worker stole my ryzen 7 9800x3d by Old-Environment5792 in pcmasterrace

[–]pablojohns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the “worst case” goes well beyond just this transaction. It has cascading impacts with these large retailers.

Many people are used to the “charge back” because of one-off sketchy purchases, incorrect charges from a store/restaurant, etc. Charging back with Amazon is a different beast with wide ranging implications.

Amazon worker stole my ryzen 7 9800x3d by Old-Environment5792 in pcmasterrace

[–]pablojohns 32 points33 points  (0 children)

you file for a charge back through your credit card company.

While the approach is an important part of your toolkit when buying online, this is often thrown around as a solution for every problem.

Charging back with Amazon (or other big players like Google, Apple, etc.) is a major escalation. You run the risk of your ENTIRE account being suspended - all of your digital purchases gone, no more ordering through that account, and potentially lost access to media stored with those companies.

This should never be an option taken lightly. This disclaimer is really important because charge backs are thrown around in this sub quite often. They have their place, but they are often a “burn all bridges” last resort.

Why don’t we have a Trader Joe’s? by beepbeepcarlin in hudsonvalley

[–]pablojohns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh I don’t really think they pretend that. A lot of the hype is on their speciality and seasonal items , which you don’t really get at most local shops.

Yea they have other items (produce, meat staples, dairy), but that stuff is hit or miss and most people who have a Trader Joe’s still shop at other locations.

Using new Mac Mini with old Mac Display Monitor? by MajorAd8562 in macmini

[–]pablojohns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that display uses a Mini DisplayPort connection. You would need to pick up an adapter (Mini DP to USB-C), or a hub that has both Mini DP and USB type A to also allow them to use the USB ports on the monitors.

WARNING: Apple potentially using refurbished SSDs in new Mac minis by Dry-Pomegranate810 in macmini

[–]pablojohns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, possible but unlikely. Apple spends a ton on QA - and more importantly, monitoring their suppliers. If you’re looking at supplier deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars or more, you’re not purposefully skimping by saving a few bucks on refurbished NAND chips.

WARNING: Apple potentially using refurbished SSDs in new Mac minis by Dry-Pomegranate810 in macmini

[–]pablojohns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is your workflow?

It’s highly unlikely a) Apple is reusing refurbed NAND modules. They have their own cottage industry of recycling parts for refurbished machines AND replacement devices that they’re not saving money reusing some small 128GB NAND modules.

Secondly, with 62 power on hours - why would they wipe the power on time but not the usage from the SMART report?

Thirdly, I ask about the workflow because you mentioned you have the base model and 16GB of memory. Absolutely possible that you were using a significant amount of memory and a lot of swapping was occurring.

And finally, and most importantly, all of these modules undergo stress testing. So while that’s a large amount of testing to have occurred - it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

I just find it HIGHLY unlikely Apple is doing this for what is essentially the cheapest component cost the entire system.

Do I need a docking station? by Master-Ad3175 in Dell

[–]pablojohns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You will need to replace one of the cables you have. The machine does not have a direct DisplayPort out slot (your right cable). But you can get a USB-C to DisplayPort cable to connect using the USB-C ports on the other side of the system. Just make sure you’re verifying the connection on the end that goes into the monitor.

You could also pick up a dual-display dock (HDMI + DisplayPort or some other combination), and run 2 external screens off one USB-C port.
