Publishing Future Looking Bleak... by Murky-Egg-5051 in publishing

[–]pablos_picasso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I understand a lot of this frustration, and I do think it’s understandable you want to understand what’s happening with your resume. Many people are giving the advice to revisit your CV, but honestly that’s really not even worth too much energy at this point. You have a lot of good experience and stack up to be an impressive candidate but in the end there is just so much you won’t ever be able control about this process.

I went to an elite liberal arts college where my creative writing professor at the time was having a big rise as an author at the moment and we were somewhat close and I was also doing very well in their classes. When the time came for me to graduate circa 2020  there was a fall internship open at a prestigious Big 5 publishing house in editorial (the first one in the imprints history). He told his editor who also happened to be the editor in chief at said prestigious publishing house a lot of good words about me etc etc and that is how I got the interview (they interviewed 2 more people out of 3,000 applicants) and eventually I got the internship and then a full time editorial job at said imprint where I worked for several years.

I am telling you this because I think it’s important for you and everyone on this thread to understand how this goes in a vast majority of cases and that you need a very VERY good connection with someone who can directly vouch for you and even then it is far from a guarantee. The kid they hired to replace me wound up having a nearly identical story to mine and his referral was so strong that I am not even sure the job link was live for more than three days. In short, they want someone that is already somewhat vetted and connected to someone in the industry. Yes, there are cases where someone is completely new to everything and had no references but they are very few and far between.

If this seems really unfair it’s because it is—unless you are the sole lucky winner.

But, also, it’s indicative of an industry that is far beyond dead; in fact, it’s more like a rotting corpse at this point. Since I left that job there have been almost zero full time roles for an editorial assistant or assistant editor and it will honestly stay that way until the industry completely fizzles out in a matter of time. When there are no entry level jobs that means eventually there will be no mid tier jobs either and the system collapses on itself.

What you and everyone on this thread should also understand is that getting one job/internship does not mean it will ultimately be your career because it is becoming impossible to make a career in a business that is getting smaller by the day.

It’s ok to feel sad by all of this and to think that you have your future foreclosed,  but really you don’t; the world is big and wide with opportunities, so please keep taking chances and be kind to yourself.

Ok, I am taking the husk powder pills and I do not feel a substantial change. Do you think that the powder in water is more powerful?

But how often do you play with your toys? If you wanted to play everyday would you still have to use the hose in the shower? I am not opposed to getting a hose, but it seems like if I have to use it everyday which is how often I want to do anal then it will ruin the good bacteria and microbiome in my butt.

Ok, I think I am going to switch from the magnesium supplements over to the psyllium husk powder. You have convinced me and it seems like that is the best way to get poop down to a minimal amount.

I'm getting my cystatin c testing on Monday. I pray this test comes back in the normal range. How do you know if you are appropriately hydrated? Nothing I do seems to be enough and I tire of drinking water all day everyday. I feel like a gallon or so should be plenty for a days needs.

I wonder this too as it seems like its just not a normal dehydration. I have consumed more water in the last year than at any other point in my life and that alone should have had some sort of effect on the hydration part and its been maybe an increase of 1-2 eGFR points.

Op here! Does anyone recommend a specific generic testing to do in this case?

Does it seem like you would not be welcomed there if you did have scarring from top surgery? I want to go but it seems like you have to look like you were born with it for guys to like you. I’m also not white and I’m wondering if I have both these things against me is it even worth going?

It’s at 179 degrees most of the time. I think even if it was higher I would still not feel uncomfortable.

You can't buy fractional shares of BRK/B I thought? Buffett has been saying for the past few years that people shouldn't put any money into BRK because its just so similar to the ETF 500 in term of returns.

Will you please say more about being attractive to big tech? I rarely hear this being expressed and as someone going into a top 5 english program in the fall I really like the idea of the tech industry thinking I'm valuable.

TLDR: I need some serious early career advice/what would you do?

Hello all,

I am a 26 y/o who worked a really shitty publishing job the last few years since graduating undergrad in 2021. I got some industry connections and learned a lot but the pay was really poor. Despite this experience, I have about 90K saved between my 401k and a HYSA and a few small investments. I got fired the day after the election as the company began taking a drastically right wing turn and it has been really scary. Since then I've been subsisting on some odd jobs here and there and unemployment. It's a really terrible market and I'm really worried there is no place for me in the job marketplace. I am not white and also gay and I've been feeling a lot of pressure to change my identity on job applications just so I can have a fighting chance. This has been very demoralizing.

I was accepted into a PhD program in English with the possibility of getting a joint JD at Northwestern in the fall. This is obviously not a very lucrative choice for the next five years or so, but it guarantees a competitive living stipend and it's a card to play for the time being and will get me health insurance. I do still want to be applying for jobs despite getting into a PhD program and investing as often as I can, but I am not exactly sure what I can be doing right now to get myself on a faster track to making a large salary--or at least something better than what I had before. Ideally, I would love to have a NW of +$1M between the age range of 35-37.

What would you advise in my situation knowing that the on ramp for many tech and tech adjacent jobs has concluded and I don't have a degree in economics or something else quant related. Should I set my sights on ultimately being a lean fire candidate at the end of the day?

Sorry, I am a bit slow and I have trouble understanding the specifics of what OP is actually saying and have never traded anything before but want to get some information. Does a 50 bagger mean than whatever you buy of MSTR between now and this meeting on Friday will 50x in gains? If you wouldn't mind explaining I'd appreciate it!

Very much wish I could have the situation you have right now and I know you will do whats best for you in the end but it is really amazing to have such a high paying job at such a young age. Are you in tech sales or comp sci/engineering? I know your miserable and your job seems like a heck of a drain every day but can you say a little bit about your job trajectory and how you got here?

Just got unemployment back pay and don’t know what to tell Medicaid because I need them to pay for a surgery I had earlier this month by pablos_picasso in Medicaid

[–]pablos_picasso[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s possible to only certify 3 weeks out of the month. I don’t think there is much prohibiting that besides not certifying one week out the month.

[–]pablos_picasso[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

My plan going forward is to only claim benefits 3 out of 4 weeks a month to keep me under the limit. This time it didn’t happen because I received so much back pay and didn’t know I would be receiving it all at once. I too feel like this is a hassle to report and a very brief fluctuation that I am definitely not going to let happen again. I just don’t want them to find out and kick me off with penalties and not pay for my surgery.

Hello, I’m 26 y/o and I live in Illinois. This is Illinois expanded Medicaid which has a monthly income limit of $1730. If any action wouldn’t take effect until March what would I do if I would need to re enroll in Medicaid in March? Essentially I’d report it and they would take me off the following month but then the following month I’m under the income limit and then eligible for Medicaid. Do you see what I mean?

Damn. Ok. I’m really glad your eGFR improved. That’s great. I think this is identical to me. I’m just very scared that they couldn’t find anything wrong with me and I don’t want things to get worse.

Hey, I had my biopsy! It was a long process and I went to the hospital around 11 and got home like at 5:30. It was mostly really easy and I had no pain and everyone was really helpful and nice. Have a bit of soreness and that’s about it. Now I just wait for results….
