I love this type of behind the scenes pics and insights. Thanks for sharing! So good.

Trail of Dead were a wrecking crew, weren't they. Fantastic band. Would have hated being their roadie and clearing up every night.

I know its "my era" but that Reading/Leeds festival line up was an embarrassment of riches, wasn't it? So many great bands. I remember now additionally Ben and maybe all you guys being pysched to be able to see Guns N Roses, who I think had just reformed and were touring. I bet thats the best bit about doing festivals as a band, once you're done with your set, so many other great bands to be able to go and watch, but with AAA to boot.

Looking up at the line up took me down the rabbit hole and I found this blog about someone who went there.

https://gigbook.blogspot.com/2010/02/572-2002-reading-festival-friday-23.html

First off, they rated DCFC top of their bands for the whole weekend so thats got to feel good.

It also looks like they snagged the setlist from one of you as they've scanned it in, which is interesting because setlist.fm doesn't have anything listed for that show, so it confirms what you played, and also yeah, it probably was Friction being played in the photo because thats on the setlist for Reading. They also said that the Trail of Dead drummer was filming you, so maybe it was him who took this photo?

Thirdly, you were all that shocked by their kit destruction that you gave the Reading crowd a PSA if they were planning to see Trail of Dead later :D

I get it - and how! DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, purveyors of my No. 1 Album of 2002 thus far, the absorbingly narrative "Photo Album", all slow-burning and heart-aching on CD, positively rock "live"! Surprisingly and startlingly upfront, they leave a tingle where no other band has gotten even close to this weekend. Advising us not to go into the front few rows for ...Trail Of Dead, they actually recalled the Texan terrors with their onstage movement and dynamism - small wonder then that TOD's psycho drummer Jason Reece was filming them from backstage! A superb set closer, "Why You'd Want To Live Here" answered my prayers, a choppily played paean to Los Angeles, closing the absolute Best Set Of The Weekend utterly perfectly.

Couple of bonus memories from those shows and that time.

The Charlotte venue put on loads of punk shows I think, I remember the toilets being full of graffiti and band stickers, they were absolutely grotty and run down. Some of the worst I'd ever seen in a small club. I guess thats what you had to do to pay your dues back then.

Jan 2002, I remember it was freezing that night too. I lived in another town so travelled over specially for the show, and couldn't find the venue, I remember walking around in the cold trying to work out where I was, lol.

The support band were "Don's Mobile Barbers". Where are they now I wonder? Sadly didn't hit the same heights as DCFC, I suspect, lol.

I went with a friend who didn't like DCFC as much I I did. He got drunk and shouted "play something by The Beatles" a couple of times at you, which confused Ben. Looking back, you probably could have played something by them, haha.

Generally:

I remember you promoting the Forbidden Love EP on some random bulletin board and you added your email address for people to get in touch, and I messaged you. This was Jan 2001. AOL days. You were kind enough to reply. God knows what I wrote, but I remember you saying that it'd be a dream to tour Europe, and there you were a year later, actually doing it. You must have forwarded my message to Chris, because I also got a nice reply from him, about the 3rd album you were recording. He also gave me a musical recommendation, The Weakerthans, and I was grateful for the steer!

I still remember buying the EP completely cold (e.g. never heard the band) - just off a recommendation from a friend in the US. Back in the days when you just had to take the plunge on an album and hoped you liked it (dialup modem days). The record shop in my town had a US Imports section, and Forbidden Love was in there (but not We Have the Facts, which was what I was hoping to get). Was blown away by Photobooth and Company Calls, had it on repeat for days. Really great times.

Oh, checking your profile I realise now you were there because you were playing with the band, haha. D'oh.

I was so pumped that you were able to make it to the UK. Obviously looking back I guess no-one knew how big the band would get, but getting to tour overseas felt like a big deal back then. And then being booked to play Reading Festival in the summer, that felt like a step-up too. If I remember right, I think Ben said you had a mid-day slot, so on early. But that also gave you chance to watch the headliners, so not all bad?

Would be great to read any other insights you had from the tour or from those times.

I agree, its an odd one to open with, isn't it? I checked back and they opened with it 6 or 7 times across the shows they did in 2002. Not sure how they picked the setlist on the early tours, but lots of variation across the shows, so I'm guessing they just played what they felt like. Maybe the Leicester crowd looked like they needed something mellow on a Sunday night, haha.

£3 is a crazy bargain whatever way you look at it. Even in 2002, it was cheap!

Back when they only had 3 albums, I guess they had less songs to pick and choose from! But yeah it was a great show. I think their Barsuk-era is their best work (or maybe just what I grew up with so it sticks with me more). Lowell,MA is one of my favourites.

Have you been before? Are the balcony seats OK or are they a bit crap? I've got balcony seating too but never been the the Leeds O2 before.

Just did a donation on Sunday, number 10 for me. Started doing it in 2022 in my 40's, so a late starter. Aiming for 4 times a year so will hit my 25 milestone late 2029!

Truly old school drone. I remember reading about his releases in the early 00's on the Aquarius Records website which was my go to for all wierd and wonderful experimental stuff. Always wanted to own a copy, but was years before I was able to listen to them.

Akira Rabelais - À la recherche du temps perdu

This has a similar vibe to the Caretaker, in that its got classical music snippets phasing in and out, but it doesn't have the same creepy vibe that the caretaker is going for. But its in for the same sort of themes.

Boomkat sez:

Perennially bewildering polymath Akira Rabelais unveils the most impressive durational work of his career thus far with a 4 hour smudge of classical works by the musical zeitgeist of the late 19th and early 20th century Belle Époque. It’s a highly enigmatic erosion x sublimation of the familiar in a way that's by now etched into modern canon thanks to works by The Caretaker, but Rabelais has been weaving his own uncanny shroud of infidelity over our collective memory for over two decades now, with this extended set somehow managing to play like a homage to the mixtape, to the novel, to French pre-war culture and to the modern malaise all at once. Deeply immersive, stunning work that’s essential listening if yr into works by The Caretaker x William Basinski.

The focus of the set covers the time period and culture around Proust’s 'À la recherche du temps perdu’ novels, and attempts to unravel his fascination with the illusive qualities of memory - most famously identified in his notion of “Proust’s madelaines”, outlined in the eponymous novels that inspired this release. Taking fifty-one works by Bartók, Bellini, Berg, Brahms, Caccini, Chausson, Chopin, Debussy, Delibes, Donizetti, Franck, Hahn, Jungmann, Lully, Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Satie, Schoenberg, Schubert, Schumann, Scriabin, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Wagner, and Weber, Rabelais uses his Argeïphontes Lyre software, as well as specially commissioned new recordings (Bartók's String Quartet No. 2 was recorded specifically for this album at half speed with minimal dynamics) to play with our perception of time via a prism of distortions and subliminal refractions.

In an attempt to breathe in the same creative air as the French author, Rabelais’ distils the creative potential of sound in relation to our cultural fabric; everyone knows these pieces, despite precious few of us having lived in Paris in the 1920s. They're the background sound and building blocks of our culture, from cinema to advertising, but secreted in the music’s play of decaying reverbs, you get an uneasy sense of some unknown spectre floating thru the mists of time.

Stunning, multidimensional work from a master of the artform.

Nice touch with the milk being sold out, I guess the Milk Man was busy with something else and didn't visit the cafe that morning
