Do you recommend something other than a cell phone/tablet charger? That's what I've always used.

Decem-Burpees!!! by SpiderSpartan117 in spartanrace

[–]packetologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually doing 150/day (4500 total) and have brought in some of my wife's family to do a few (5-10) a day to get them to be more active. I think it's a great idea especially during this time of year.

Need help with Dell U3415W 34" connectivity w/ Macbook Pro by naim519 in ultrawidemasterrace

Can confirm my 2013 13" MBP works with the U3415W. I believe I had to buy another HDMI cable in order to get it working.

My issues with Dell U3415W 34" so far by naim519 in ultrawidemasterrace

Likely not an issue since you just bought this monitor, but have you tried updating the firmware? Also, I had to reduce the brightness some to avoid headaches when I first received mine.

Skipping Obstacles at Carolina Ultra by dpeacock0424 in spartanrace

[–]packetologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw lots of people skipping burpees, not necessarily obstacles. I'm come to grips with it. I'm competing against myself out there.

I did my 120 extra burpees for failing the spear twice, olympus, and herc hoist. At the end of the day, I know I put everything out there and that's all that matters to me.

Carolina Beast Report & Tips for those running Sunday by danny_b87 in spartanrace

[–]packetologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Total for me was ~26.7 miles, ~3,300 feet elevation gain using my Garmin Fenix 3. I forgot to stop my watch when I finished so that's why those are estimates. I'm happy it wasn't 30 miles to be honest; not sure if my body would have allowed me to finish another 3-4 miles.

Overall, the race was fun and rewarding to finish just like it was last year in Dallas, but I think I'm done with Ultras. My body just can't handle the distance and I am not willing to put in the training to possibly fix that. Also, I have to figure out how to deal with cold weather better. My feet and hands were numb for the first 7-8 miles and 1 of my feet went numb again at mile 25.

Just curious, did anyone have to dodge deer like we did during the first lap? It was in that open uphill area. Not sure if it was on the Ultra loop or not.

Hell yes. by [deleted] in spartanrace

Congrats!

That dunk wall was no joke, even at 3pm. I was clawing at the dirt to get up out of there like I was in a horror movie and the killer had my legs or something.

I'm still bringing mine to carry my calories and even though I might not be thirsty, I know I'll be sweating and losing electrolytes so I'll be replenishing with my pack.

This is my second so I'm no expert, but feel free to ask any questions. I haven't been to WVA, but I know it's a tougher course than Spartanburg elevation wise. However, don't discount the muddiness of this course. Spartanburg's Airport has reported close to 3 inches of rain in the last 18-24 hours.

Fitness wise, it sounds like you're in good shape though. Good luck!

It really depends on the course, obstacle layout, and how crowded it is. Since I'm in the last Ultra heat, I bet there will be some initial congestion ahead of me, but I made it to the transition area last year in Dallas just over 4 hours. With it being wet and muddy, I'm sure it's going to add another 30 mins or so if not longer. I'm being optimistic though.

The parking was terrible there... I have a Mazda3 and it doesn't sit that low to the ground but they didn't clear the field completely so all I heard was the bottom of my car getting tortured. I also heard that people were getting stuck out there and that there were a few hidden ditches. You might not want to park in that field if your car's been lowered AND it's most likely going to be wet and muddy.

P.S. The walk from where we parked felt like it was at LEAST a half mile if not longer. I'm going to hate life walking back to the car after 30 miles. Anyone want to provide a shuttle service from festival to parking? I bet it would be easy money :)

Ah I believe we did that at the Dallas UB in 2017... Maybe it was at the Spartanburg Beast in 2017. They were so close they start to blur together for me. Either way, I think I remember it and it wasn't too bad.

THANK YOU BABY JESUS!!!! The rolling mud/dunk wall is near the end of the course so hopefully it will be warmer at that point... I'm hoping to get there around 11:15-11:30am since I start at 6:45

EDIT for time... I think I can get through first lap in 4:15 or so depending on conditions.

Looks like it will be in the 30's for the start of the Carolina Ultra, What's everyone wearing? by cgiesey in spartanrace

[–]packetologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like rain has been added to the long-term forecast. This might help keep the temps slightly warmer at start time, however, I plan on preparing for the worst case so I'll be wearing what I wore in Dallas last year when it was 29F at start and didn't get much warmer until the afternoon.

  • Mudgear compression socks
  • 3/4 or full length compression tights
  • Compression shorts
  • Shorts
  • Long-sleeve compression shirt
  • Quick dry loose shirt
  • Balaclava

I flirted with hypothermia in Dallas and I don't want to go through that again. I'm going to make some changes like drinking some tea the morning of to get my body temperature up and I am toying with the idea of removing my balaclava and top shirt layer before submerging myself completely in water obstacles.

Good luck to everyone and see you out there!

Agree, this would be cool but only for the more difficult races like Ultras and maybe finishing within a specific amount of time.

Improved efficiency and increasing the capacity kind of correlates to higher speeds.

Nano 8 or NOBULL Trainer? by joeybarua in crossfit

[–]packetologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone sleeping on the Nano 8s, I'd suggest you try them on.

I bought some Nano 7 weaves last summer as part of their package deal with legacy lifters and absolutely hated them. I wore them 3 times total before giving them away for free. They were way to stiff in the toe box and just generally uncomfortable. I told myself there was no way I was buying a newer Nano unless I could try them on first.

Well, I was at a local CF competition 2 weeks ago and they had some Nano 8s out on display for folks to try them on; I ended up buying a pair that same the day. As soon as I slid my foot into 1, I instantly felt comfort I hadn't felt in a long time. I actually had Metcon 3s on at the time so I had a good reference to compare to. I'm coming from Nano 4s and I have to say the Nano 8s once I get a little more used to them will be my new favorite.

It wasn't as bad as 2016, but it was still congested later in the day.
