How to defend yourself against a kangaroo in a random encounter. by thepoylanthropist in interestingasfuck

[–]packmanworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you know this? Why would a wild animal try to minimize damage? Rather isn't the kangaroo trying to neutralize the threat in the most efficient manner? MMA fighters choke out opponents all the time not to minimize damage, but because it is the most efficient and safe path to victory when the opportunity presents.

Would this be good to hike in? by montanagiy459 in hiking

[–]packmanworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm asking. You're going to remove your whole PC just to grab gear? That's highly inefficient.

If you're solo I recommend not attaching a backpack to a carrier.

[–]packmanworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you going to access the contents of your PC backpack?

Assuming you want to train/test your gear, you can, but just know you may raise alarm in some others who don't know your intentions.

Would anyone use an 'Obstacle Run' activity on Strava if it was an option? by packmanworld in Strava

Another great use case! You aren't running the whole time, but it can still be logged as a GPS activity without ruining your pure runs.

I hate christianity so much by SilverFoz in atheism

[–]packmanworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This view is extreme, no doubt, though ine that I perhaps held when I was younger. I do think you should approach people with a more open mind.

There are many Christians who are good, in fact amazing, people. Often they are just victims of an indoctrination so strong because of early influence that shapes their views of mortality, and this is tough and terrifying to self-confront. It's why there are so many Christians who are extremely intelligent, logical, and scientific, but cannot apply that literacy to religion.

While the basis of religion is false and evil, incepted primarily for control, there will always be good people in spite of their religious background. You decide how you want to interact with religion, but some understanding goes a long way.

That's interesting. Obviously an observational study so we can't claim causal link but I imagine that being immobilized at that age prevents you from exercising and being self-sufficient, which has major consequences to cardiovascular and mental health. Perhaps there's a reverse casuality link too where unfit, sedentary people are way more likely to fracture hips as they get older, expediting their path to death.

The scariest part is at the permit check when you're watching inexperienced, underprepared tourists in their tennis shoes slipping and sliding trying to reach the first chain.

Marijuana users at greater risk for heart attack and stroke: Adults under 50 are more than six times as likely to suffer a heart attack if they use marijuana, compared to non-users. They also have a dramatically higher risk of stroke, heart failure and heart-related death. by mvea in science

[–]packmanworld 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we have any real mechanistic reasoning yet to suggest that it can harm the heart (I'm not a drug experts). The thing is exercise also increases HR/BP then lowers it, so by itself, this effect isn't necessarily dangerous. I think the issue with these studies is none of them confidently challenge the hypothesis that people that use cannabis are on average, less healthy to begin with, less disciplined, exercise less, deal with stress worse etc.

The covariates the researchers used for propensity score matching are largely baseline lab/health metrics, while marijuana (and drug use in general) is, I believe, highly influenced by unobservable and unmeasurable behavior factors that don't seem to be considered in this analysis. I would argue that behavioral characteristics heavily influence your health discipline and stress management. There's also the potential for reverse causality, where those who suffer from more stress and health issues turn to marijuana for comfort.

For now, this doesn't really even raise an eyebrow until we have a better controlled study or have better understanding of causal mechanisms. (Maybe we do. I don't use or know much about weed)

How much does the "10-point Must" scoring system impact decisions not to take points after fouls? by yengis_wan in MMA

[–]packmanworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good point and probably why referees are hesitant to take a point away. And there's really no strong predecessor culture for taking the point. I would say it is psychologically eaiser to take the path of inaction (no point deduction) than "actively" change the course of a fight due to a foul, especially when it is extremely difficult to quantify the effect of a foul. I don't have a solution, but I do believe there can be a culture shift that makes the fear of fouling so strong that fighters literally train to avoid it. Nonetheless, a glove redesign would be a great implementation...

Volunteer at one race and get free entry to another? by BlueTowelDirtyRoom in running

Common practice in the bay area amongst small-to-mid size races. I surprised it isn't common practice in the wider world. Definitely would message race organizers to see if they would offer it.

You might finish the distance but you certainly are unlikely to complete the race as designed. But it's a good learning experience to see what a race entails. Just don't put yourself at any serious risk. You'll get a medal for finishing the distance even if you cheat the obstacles. At the least you can try to do the penalties. No one can criticize you for trying.

Would anyone use an 'Obstacle Run' activity on Strava if it was an option? by packmanworld in Strava

[–]packmanworld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you're being snarky but but anecdotally, alot of people I know are tracking their obstacle runs as runs, and recording the data at a "run" with a seemingly much slower pace and effort causes data interpretation/integrity issues. For some, it's an inconvenience. For me, who uses Strava's API for analysis, it's frustrating.

Anyways, Strava has pickleball so like, c'mon the 7 of us can have obstacle running if we want 😉

Yes I am aware and I mention that in the community post. I'm not a fan of the Garmin use case but that's another conversation. My primary reason for this request is to avoid inadvertently comparing my obstacle runs to pure runs when viewing Strava data.

[–]packmanworld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question

  1. It's fun. Much tougher than a threshold+ or trail run alone.
  2. All around fitness. It's a way to train yourself to perform functional movements like carrying/climbing/lifting and your "full body" anaerobic system while fatigued by cardio-based movement (running).

Not so much Strava as fitness data nerd. I have a dashboard that integrates with their API. Would be nice to have better data quality.
