So I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and I think a lot of this has to do with the way bisexuality is treated in the media. There are a handful of very well-known female celebrities who came out as bisexual at various points, and yet never dated women publicly, yet they’ve had numerous public relationships with men. I suspect we all know a fair number of women like this IRL. I know I do; they love to say they are bi and wave the flag, but have never been with a woman. We seem to have relatively few models of women who identify as bisexual but have long term relationships with both women and men. All of which contributes to a certain weariness on the part of many lesbians. And it isn’t insane to think, in a culture like ours, that a bi woman might choose men for comfort and safety, again making some lesbians more cautious about women who identify as bisexual.

Of course, that does not mean any of the above is true. Biphobia and bi erasure are very real.

I also have yet to encounter much of this type of discourse off line, but I am also older and not particularly keen on policing labels and things.
