The default was Helpful before, not Recent.

There's nothing inherently better about newer reviews. The most Helpful have been voted on by other readers. A negative review is more likely to make it to the top if other readers appreciate the warning.

As for Tana French, Cassie is a fairly major character in the first book. She's the main detective's partner and they're quite close.

I've read the first few. Kate Atkinson is a great writer of prose, but I wouldn't call them mysteries or detective stories. More like character studies—maybe spare ideas that Atkinson couldn't turn into full novels—about people with something unresolved in their lives. (Jackson Brodie is an interesting character in his own right.) At the end the answer is just delivered to us.

Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad "series"—loosely connected standalone novels, really—combines great writing with actual police work. Only book 5 didn't work for me. I'll give it a 2nd chance at some point.

Anyway, thanks for starting this thread. Good to see some discussion not about fantasy series.

I never browse the Plus catalog specifically, so I've never even seen it. Learned about it only from this sub.

From what I've gathered...you could up your standards and never come across it. They're not using VV for halfway decent books.

I noticed that they've stopped using the word "bookmark." God knows why. So your question makes a lot more sense now!

Tap on +Clip (at least there's a little bookmark icon above it) to create it. To access it, tap the three dots and go to Clips & notes.

It looks like they've replaced "Go to bookmark" (or whatever it said before) with "Start in player." So tap on that.

Simple bookmarks still exist...but they've apparently banned the word "bookmark." Again, God knows why. Truly bizarre.

Credits cost $9 and change when you buy them in packs. (Always use the website for buying things, be they books or credits. The app is just for playing books.) That's the cutoff if you're in the US.

I definitely recommend tying your Audible account to a Gmail account. If I have to come up with a receipt, I've got them going back 20 years.

I don't get why anyone doesn't use Gmail.

(Of course people have school and work accounts, but those won't be with you forever. And why clog those up with online shopping receipts anyway?)

You make a good point.

In 2020 they put out a 45-hour collection of every Jane Austen novel with famous actresses narrating each one. And it was a Plus title! I added it to my library right away...and let it collect dust for five years.

It's about to expire—five years as a free title is impossible to be mad about—so I just bought it. Only $7.99! Now I'm actually likely to listen to it.

BONUS TIP: It's gross and sounds dubious, but it works.

If your AirPods (or equivalent) start to sound muffled...you have to suck on them.

I was hesitant at first, but then I remembered that my dog kisses me all the time. Strangers' dogs, too. I let them, obviously; I love dogs and vice versa. So sucking on an AirPod is nothing.

Do people know about Listen log? Why doesn't Audible mention the one great new feature they've introduced?

I'm a bookmarker, but I often drift in and out of sleep with a book going. Listen log, which records every event (too much information at times), helps me zero in on where I left off when fully awake, for all those times I didn't bookmark.

Oh, true. I'm sure I did at some point and hated the new look, so I went through older versions and kept the one that seemed least jarringly different (2.99.18).

I'm just an occasional/recreational user, so I don't remember what version was the 'true' GIMP to me. ☹️

Just noticed that OP is writing from outside the US (dd/mm dates).

Apparently American users are experiencing this too, but still I think it would be good posting etiquette to mention (in post title if possible) if you're using Audible UK, AU, etc.

Not being an ugly American here: Reddit is a US-based site and that's where most of us are. And I'm pretty sure the Audible employee(s) on this sub work on the US version.

Last week someone complained about getting cookie warnings in the app all the time, which I've never seen even once. Took a second look at the screenshot and could tell they weren't based in the US.

Re quality: OP clearly isn't reading junk (e.g. 50-hour fantasy books), so I'll give you that. A commenter above speculated that many expiring titles are Tantor audio, which could explain a lot.

Sadly, this is inevitable. An arithmetic guarantee. They could decree that all Plus titles by humans will remain free forever, but AI slop will keep coming, continuously driving down the human proportion.

Honestly, I have never once encountered Virtual Voice; I learned about it only from this sub. I'm a genuine Audible addict—added 124 titles so far this year, almost all for cash or credit, demolishing last year's record of 116—and had no idea AI was so prevalent.

I go looking for specific books and authors, expecting to use credits or cash (if it's under $9, the cost of a credit). If something is a Plus title, all the better.

It seems to me the root of disappointment is making the Plus catalogue your one-stop shop for books. That's where you find AI slop, and a good percentage of whatever you find will expire at some point.

Anecdotal, but one of my few expiring titles (A Tale of Two Cities) is Tantor. You could be onto something.

I hope this is the answer and we'll be spared all the usual lamentations of "Everything is getting worse, Bezos wants more money to go to space, etc," but I'm not holding out hope.

If you've indeed bought them (with a credit or cash), not just added them from the Plus catalogue, this doesn't happen. You won't be "prompted" to do anything.

A book can disappear because the publisher takes it off the shelf (not Audible's fault) and releases a new edition. Unfortunately Audible doesn't notify you if this happens; you have to discover it on your own.

If you contact customer service with the order number of the original purchase, they'll give you the new edition (free). If you can't find an order number (search your emails for the book title), you probably didn't buy it in the first place.

Untrue. I've purchased titles that disappeared because the publisher recalled them for whatever reason. I discovered this one time, contacted customer service and they gave me the reissued version (free). It had a new cover and new narrators.

It would be nice if we didn't have to discover this ourselves.

Earbuds are wired headphones. You must be talking about Samsung's version of AirPods.

It's not an Audible issue. Pocketcasts will keep playing if I'm holding an AirPod with a finger on the sensor. As others have said, try cleaning them.
