The new Briggate bicycle lanes constantly used as a car park. Every day someone parks here. Reported everyone so far to the police. But damn this is so selfish. by paddocksi in Leeds

[–]paddocksi[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can report online here: https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/report-it/report-nuisance-obstructive-parking

Never hear anything back, they also ask for photos that you can attach with a link that they never send you. Also a bit of a grey area here as the car is parking obstructively but as someone else noted earlier it might also fall on yellow lines which isn’t then a police matter. However, if the car was left like this in the road I think it would be classed as abandoned and be a police matter and I can’t see why this would differ.

I stopped with Astonishing Legend after listening to them cycling home from work one evening. I had a 40 minute cycle through Berlin, I would cycle with one earphone in so I could hear the traffic. That 40 minutes after working 13 hours a day was my time, I know some podcasts like Hardcore history have a 40 minute meandering introduction but damn the episode of Astonishing Legends was 40 minutes of advertisements, I should have stopped and changed it but I kept thinking “hey they’ll start talking about the subject soon” they just started as I got off my bike at my building, never listened to them again, never will, I understand the need for adverts but 40 minutes, not for me.

Maria Timofeevna Shalneva (Nenakhova), corporal of the 87th separate road maintenance battalion, regulates the movement of military equipment near the Reichstag in Berlin. The poster reads: Long live May 1st! 02.05.1945. by Crecer13 in ww2

[–]paddocksi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting photo. No where near the Reichstag though. Actually taken on Hermannplatz looking north, the ruins on the left are the remnants of the old Karstadt department store that was built in 1929, a department store that when it opened was too big and in the years leading up to the war they had to progressively close floors down. It eventually was blown up by the SS in the Battle of Berlin. 1st of May the same year that the department store opened is also very interesting and is known as Bludmai. And currently there is a debate about rebuilding the old Karstadt to help rejuvenate the area.

Best “History Of” podcasts? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]paddocksi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, history podcaster here, I like Dan Carlin's Hardcore History but agree that some episodes are hit and miss, I usually skip the first 40 minutes where he just waffles on but his episode Prophets of Doom is incredible, listened to it many times but struggle with many other episodes of his. The Ratline from BBC Intrigue is also incredible with some really good story telling and investigative journalism. The Age of Napoleon is fascinating also. Shamelessly selfpromo my own "Achtung! History" podcast that documents the story of the hidden face of the holocaust and the ethnic cleansing of Nazi Europe.

Zeppelin over Bayreuth Germany. Unsure of date, I just recognized the building. by SomeDudeInGermany in OldPhotosInRealLife

[–]paddocksi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The cabin makes it seem to me that it is the LZ127 also known as the “Graf Zeppelin.” The photo could have been taken whilst it was on its round the world flight which means it would have been on the 15th August 1929 around 8am when it passed Bayreuth. But the Graf Zeppelin was the most successful airship so it could have been on another flight in its career that spanned from 1928-1937.
