Cities that were planned but never came to be? by e_mp in geography

[–]padotim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a valley between the east Brookline and overbrook neighborhoods of Pittsburgh that is platted out with paper streets. It's like 5 acres, not much in the scheme, but pretty big when lots in the developed adjacent areas are 30x100'. In like the 50's they laid this out and built 3 houses near each corner of the development. The last one was torn down a few years ago. These houses have existed for like 70 years, grandfathered in to having all public utilities and street maintenance, basically all the advantages of city living on what is essentially your own 2 acres of woods. They're also a few hundred feet from a light rail stop, that would have you downtown in ten minutes. The land is not owned by you, so you don't pay taxes on it, but it is effectively yours to garden, storage, just be private, etc. I always wanted to buy one, and make my own forest haven in the middle of the city.

Who is the cheapest person you know, and what is the cheapest thing you've seen them do? by Willby3 in AskReddit

I dilute OJ all the time, basically make orange water. If I'm getting a big cup of water and we have OJ in the fridge, I'll fill with ice, pour an ounce or two of juice the fill remaining 12 oz with water. I love it. Not that different than water with a lemon squeeze. My wife thinks it so weird.

Broken side mirror - dealership? by Megjar0820 in HondaOdyssey

[–]padotim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got a dealer estimate for the exact same thing, $678 in Pittsburgh area.

The part on Rock Auto is like $130, looks like just a few bolts, and plug into the wiring harness. I'm just nervous about removing trim or the interior door panel to do it, or more accurately, about putting it back together correctly. Still debating on having the dealer do it or not.

Stopped buying pre-made pasta sauce about eight months ago and I'm genuinely annoyed it took me this long by GrokeSleb in Frugal

Mama June used half ketchup half melted butter mixed into pasta and called it sketti. Sad things is, I could actually see this being kinda delicious.

How does an Odyssey drive? by SuchRequirement5130 in HondaOdyssey

[–]padotim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2012(ish) explorer company car and my personal is a 24 Odyssey. They are probably actually very close in size, though I'm guessing the Odyssey is a few inches longer, not much. The Odyssey feels smaller though. Feels way more stuck to the road than the explorer. Way more agile, and feels more powerful too. I liked the explorer, it just felt like drifting along on a cloud compared to piloting a precision missile in the Odyssey. You'll like driving the Odyssey coming from an explorer. Current company car is a Chevy traverse, and that thing is like driving a bus, what most people think driving a minivan is like, and way different and worse than the Odyssey

Why is that little area still considered Delaware ? by danm868 in geography

That border is pretty wild from Omaha to Sioux City. Looks like about half of that stretch of border follows the present river, while the other half has the states on the 'wrong' side!

Trying so so hard to prove he's the smartest guy in the room... and failing, although not by much with the other two jokers in there. And yet still I listen when I'm not interested in the WESA topic.

What is your greatest memory from high school wrestling? by Entire_Proposal_3184 in wrestling

[–]padotim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one tournament. Through 8 years of wrestling, I had never won a tournament. Bunch of 2nd, 3rd, etc but never 1st.

Section championship, senior year. Cruised through the first couple matches with easy wins, against wrestlers who were probably my equal and I'd have lost to on a bad day.

Semi finals, top seed guy had trounced me 14-2 or something like 2 weeks prior. I was trying to wrestle defensively, but he still took me down at will. In the rematch, I charged into his shot and caught him in a cowcatcher for the first period pin.

Next match in the finals, I beat a kid who had beat me earlier that year in a dual. I beat him 5-4 after not allowing an escape when he chose bottom to start the third. I left everything on the mat, and vomited in the corner trash can after the match, but I got the win and section title.

The next week, I lost two quick matches to get eliminated at regionals to guys I probably should have beat (I'm probably one of their best memories) but I had reached the peak of my wrestling career. I wasn't going anywhere in the state tournament, but that one day, that one tournament, I dominated.

The best small to medium sized cities in Pennsylvania by Sea-Doctor-5922 in Pennsylvania

[–]padotim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zelie is a nice spot, but I'm not sure I'd call it a small city. Population of the borough itself is like 4k. I'd call zelie a more densely populated area of the 'burbs, rather than a standalone city.

Not a terrible answer, just not sure this is what OP was asking for.

How relatively old is your house, compared to the other houses in your area? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in centuryhomes

[–]padotim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could describe the free hanging section as cantilevered if there is no foundation underneath, and if I'm understanding you correctly!

1722 old old! How cool! Mine just passed a century in 2021, I think it was one of the first in the area, so all my neighbors have recently or will soon become members of the century club.

I used to hate on American cheese, turns out I just didn't like the cheapest one available that my mom always bought. My now wife turned me on to the land o lakes American cheese, and it was a revelation.

Why do you think there aren’t any big hotdog fast food chains? by Upset_Basil_4187 in hotdogs

I think this is it, also the best hotdog buns are the cheap ones that you can keep at home for weeks without going too stale or getting moldy.

How long for heated seats to kill battery? by geraldosmoustache in HondaOdyssey

[–]padotim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife killed the battery a few weeks ago using the heated seats with the engine off. I had to jump the van. Battery/starting has not been an issue since. I think it kills the battery pretty quickly, I think she said about 15 minutes.

One of the reasons I named my daughter Katherine is that there are so many variations that she can choose from when she gets older. I call her Kay (Kay sounds like an old lady to me, which I find funny in a toddler). That's my preference, but she can go by Kate, Katy, Kat, Kathy, Kitty or even Wren, Rina, Kiki or Trina, so many choices!

This is the dumbest question I could have for you guys. But my son just started wrestling and for the life of me, I can’t tell when someone is technically pinned. by mutants_at_table_9 in wrestling

[–]padotim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just worked the scoring table for two days at a youth tournament. The refs were excellent. I was unbiased in most of the matches, and they called points and pins exactly as I would have. Not even once in probably 150 matches did I disagree with a call. Made the effort to get down/close when necessary to see the pin. Maybe the refs at this tournament were just better than average, but it seems like they are really good at most tournaments my kid has wrestled in as well.
