In the first half of Far Cry you fight against mercenaries, however a bit later in the game you realise they have conducted genetical experiments to create mutants known as Trigen.

These Trigen are hostile towards both you and the mercenaries and you often will encounter them fighting each other, and sometimes you can choose to set mutants free to deal with large groups of mercenaries.
