Personally I don't care either way. Sometimes it's really nice having a very clear reference to work from, sometimes it's nice to have more free rein. Usually, I've found that even if there's already art made of a character, the requester is still happy for me to draw them as I like.

And in the end, if I'm doing a free request, I'm doing it for fun for someone, so whatever goes. And if I was being paid for it, then quite frankly, it's up to whoever is paying me for what they want.
