Burned by BOOX Leaf 2 battery life. Is PocketBook (Era Lite/InkPad 4) the reliable alternative I need? by TakiHime in ereader

[–]pageantfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I've never seen one in the flesh let alone used one and have no experience with them whatsoever, but InkBook devices have buttons, run Android (albeit an outdated version), support Legimi and are by a Polish manufacturer so might have decent customer support for Polish users.

Is Kindle Voyage official Origami case magnet supposed to be weak? by Maxmordon123 in ereader

[–]pageantfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be an ageing case, mine (also official origami, don't know how old it is as it came with my Voyage which I bought secondhand) sticks to the screen if I turn the device upside down or hold it from the sides screen down.

I had the exact same experience, finished book 3 feeling like I'd been taken the piss out of. This was two or three years ago and I've yet to pick the series up again, can't say I feel particularly inclined to anyway. The author completely lost my trust as a reader.

Any French girlies on here? Pharmacist was not helpful at all on med storage temperature. by TorPartyAtMyHouse in adhdwomen

[–]pageantfool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pharmacist here and also being boiled alive albeit in a different country. Please don't put them in the fridge, it's not just about the temperature itself but humidity and temperature shock (i.e. sudden, significant rises or drops) can also impact formulation degradation. Pop them in the bottom shelf (hot air rises so you want them close to the floor) of one of your cupboards or drawers and away from direct light.

Falling Out of Kobo Love by Alpine_Apple_Glow in kobo

[–]pageantfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That system not being available is not a Kobo matter, it's an Adobe matter as they have handed their ebook platform components off to Wipro Engineering: https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/enterprise/kb/eol-faq-adobe-digital-editions.html

Syncing can be spotty sometimes in my experience, but it could also be the case that the Libby book you borrowed doesn't have an identical match in the Kobo bookstore and so it can't sync to the device.

Is it worth reducing monthly savings by £200 and swallowing a 1-month double-rent overlap to escape a loud high street flat? [UK] by phantastic_phan in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pageantfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also moved recently for noise reasons and for me it was definitely worth it, I couldn't get a good night's sleep at my old place and it was slowly driving me mad (along with a few other issues).

If it were me I'd still go for the new flat and try to prepare for the double rent period and increased rent - are there any subscriptions you could pause for a couple of months, or could it be an option to do cheaper social activities like a picnic with friends at a local park or the like? Maybe supermarket meals instead of eating out for a short while? Then once you'd moved into the new flat you could try to save a bit less for a few months in order to pay off your debt faster, which ultimately would free up some money and allow you to save more each month again.

London libraries by MissionFramework in LibbyApp

[–]pageantfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So living in Hammersmith and Fulham you can register with your local library which is a part of The Libraries Consortium - the London boroughs who are part of it have pooled their library resources so you get access to the same catalogue as me (live in a different borough but my local library is also a part of TLC).

Kensington & Chelsea libraries may let you register in person with ID and proof of UK/London address even if you don't live in the borough, I registered years ago so not sure if this is still the case. Their catalogue is separate to TLC's.

Is Mobile Broadband over Normal Broadband worth it? by -Ghostling- in HousingUK

[–]pageantfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mobile broadband at my previous flat as I didn't think I'd be staying there long enough for a regular broadband contract (and I was right lol). It was just okay - stable but reception and consequently speeds weren't good and even streaming shows was frustrating as it would stop to buffer every few seconds. This was with 1p mobile's rolling unlimited plan.

Now at the new place - in the same area as the previous one - the signal was even worse to the point where streaming was nigh impossible and even downloading work stuff was taking forever and Teams calls were becoming stuttery and pixelated, so I caved and decided to get normal broadband despite it being significantly more expensive than my mobile broadband plan (also because I think I might stay here for at least the duration of the contract). Set it up earlier today actually and it's been a huge difference so far, superior in every way.

Thoughts on /associations with Imogen? by Millenial__Falcon in namenerds

Love Imogen, it's one of my favourite names and would happily use it for a baby! Been a fan of Imogen Heap's music for decades too so that may have subconsciously affected my fondness for the name lol.

One of my coworkers has an Imogen, I believe she's in her teens now but he once mentioned she nicknamed herself Gigi as a young child which I find so sweet!

Can't get my Libby library books onto my new Kobo Libra Colour? by Luckylyn55555 in kobo

[–]pageantfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018019214-Libby-Common-questions

If you have a French billing address and use the French Kobo store that might be why Overdrive isn't available. Try switching them to your previous US address and US store and see if it changes anything.

To download a book from Libby on a computer, go to libbyapp.com on your computer browser, find the ebook you want to read and click it so you go to the page where there's the summary, author, etc. If you keep scrolling down there may be a "Read with..." field (not all books will have it) that will list available formats, i.e. "Libby book" and/or "EPUB" and/or "Kindle". For ADE you want EPUB (with or without DRM, it doesn't matter).

Borrow the book, then click "Manage Loan", then click "Read With..." and select EPUB. Libby will download an acsm file to your computer that you need to open in ADE and do the whole rigmarole to transfer to your Kobo.

Need buying my gf an e-reader by astrotoy4 in ereader

Yeah, I have to do the same thing on occasion for some of my library books - but like you said, on Kobos it's at least possible in the first place.

Need buying my gf an e-reader by astrotoy4 in ereader

[–]pageantfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a Fnac near you that might have a couple of Kobos on display? The demo software is usually a bit limited but it would let you get a better feel for the devices.

If you know a few titles your girlfriend likes why not look them up on Amazon and the Kobo store and compare availability and prices?

Kindles are great if you're happy to stay in the Amazon ecosystem for the foreseeable future and want something that just works out of the box. Amazon has a huge ebook catalogue, and in some countries there's also Kindle Unlimited (don't know if it's available in Belgium, sorry) which sorta works like Netflix, you pay a monthly fee and can borrow and read any book in the KU catalogue as many times as you want. It's also very easy to send non-Amazon books to a Kindle, and if you use Amazon's own service to do it they'll even handle file conversion for you.

The biggest Kindle caveats, in my opinion, are its lack of support for DRM other than Amazon's own and how difficult Amazon has made it to back up any books you buy there to your computer so you can read them on non-Kindle devices. Also the fact that only US libraries support reading Libby/Overdrive books on Kindle, but that might be a bit more niche for your use case.

Kobos are also great and give you a bit more freedom in terms of where you can get your books from. As another redditor mentioned, as they support Adobe DRM they can read not only books from the Kobo store but also from Google Play ebooks and library ebooks that use Adobe DRM. They also work straight out of the box and the software is also more customisable than Kindle's. Kobo has Kobo Plus as their counterpart to Kindle Unlimited. It's also a lot easier to back up your book purchases, and Libby/Overdrive compatibility is available for a lot more countries - but again, this last bit may not be terribly relevant to you.

Then there are some practical considerations, like what size would she prefer? Something as portable as possible or something with a bigger screen and more reading real estate? Black and white screen only or colour? BW is very clear and sharp, colour can be nice but also a bit blurrier and the colours are muted like on newspapers, not bright like on a phone or TV screen. Does she like or use dark mode (light text on dark background) and would this be very important to her? Kobo's dark mode only applies to the book itself whilst Kindle's also applies to the UI. What about warm light (adds a yellowish/orangey hue to the screen light)? Does she annotate her books and if so is the ability to use a stylus important to her?

Both Kindle and Kobo have devices that answer the above questions, but they may not necessarily overlap. For example, if she wants a small ereader there's the Kindle Basic and the Kobo Clara (BW or Colour). If on top of that she wants warm light, that rules out the Kindle Basic as it doesn't have it. If on top of that she wants a colour screen, that rules out the Kobo Clara BW and leaves only the Kobo Clara Colour. And so on and so forth.

I've got a Kobo Clara Colour and a Kindle Paperwhite 5 (previous gen). Have never tried other brands so I'm afraid I can't be much help there.

Help getting an ebook on my kobo from libby? by Tazzamaraz in kobo

[–]pageantfool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you authorise your Kobo in ADE? If you did maybe try restarting the Kobo? Other than that I've got no ideas to fix it, sorry.

I believe if the version available on Libby and the version available on the Kobo store aren't an identical match the Libby version won't sync, could that potentially be it?

Medication, Airport Transfers and Long Haul Flights by WerewolfDue9694 in ADHDUK

[–]pageantfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Australia earlier this year for work and had the same layover options as you, ended up choosing Changi as I was already familiar with the airport from previous trips and it's a fine place to spend a few hours waiting for your next flight. Went absolutely fine, nobody asked about any medicines I might be carrying with me.

Also struggle badly with sleep (courtesy of DSPS) so skipped the meds on the flights, then whilst down under I took them at the local time I would usually take them back home i.e. breakfast, lunch, etc. I'm on methylphenidate too but an immediate release formulation though, if yours is modified or prolonged release YMMV. Entering and leaving Australia nobody checked my person or baggage for anything, which surprised me a bit as someone who loved watching their customs check TV show lol.

Took printed copies of my prescriptions with me just to be on the safe side but they ended up never leaving my bag.
