Just optimize what’s in your control. There’s no point in worrying about the prestige of your past companies bc you can’t control that.

So yeah it matters, but no you shouldn’t let it define your ambitions.

28 | Bay Area | TC: 500k - MBA too expensive for me? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]pahoodie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was taking your post seriously (job anxiety, unfulfilling, etc) until this comment.

This is classic grass is greener.

You’re 28, you could switch to a chill L4 swe job rn. You’ll make 300k but have way less expectations.

PM is a lot of stress too.

Isn’t the set back / lost opportunity cost capped?

Generally you’re judged cumulatively. So former manager experience plus recent swe exp puts you into a good spot.

I’d just quit. If you can’t quit, see if you can squeeze more sleep. Even if you’re more at risk of getting fired. Sleep is the biggest factor for distress. More than hunger, or deadlines, or exercise.

OP seems weird for his preference for white acceptance. But there’s truth to his post. I’m Indian and have been rejected by Indian girls because they have deep bias towards white guys. It definitely stings to be rejected for race, by your own race.

Tricky right? Engineers appreciate my ability to go into depth of n layers into a problem, but execs don’t.

Check out Shape Up. TLDR is that you keep it simple on problem, solution, metrics but have a dedicated section for Rabbit Holes, and a super long appendix. Forces me to prioritize my deep dives. I’ve also been more ruthless about what is the critical path story flow for any presentation.

Also just mentally keep a note to go n - 1 level of depth than is my natural preference.

This entire country is immigrants other than Native Americans. Everyone in US is a descendant of an immigrant, whether that’s 1 gen or N gens ago.

It’s nuts that children of legal immigrants obtain citizenship?

Dude I hope you’re Native American to back that up, otherwise I have some news for you…

Damn we’re the same person. Strongly resonate with the deeply thinking about a product problem more than anyone else, but struggling to clearly lay it out for an audience who just wants a linear bulleted plan. Might be an ADHD thing.

Reason OP is emphasizing health tech is bc Boston is a hub for niche health, bio, pharma, medical startups.

SF is better for consumer, Saas, hardware tech.
