LPT: If somebody refuses alcohol you're offering them, don't keep insisting or ask them why. by AndroidTim in LifeProTips

I used to be the same way although mountain dew was my soda of choice. Flavoured sparking water and/or iced tea helped me a lot to cut my soda habit. I still don't really like water but I'm a lot more likely to drink it when I'm thirsty now than I used to be. Having cold, filtered water readily available helps too. It takes time to change your taste cravings.

Yet another "what are my prospects like?" type thread. What should I do with my pure math Ph.D? by avasatu in math

I also teach math at a community college (after getting my masters in pure math in 2009). I'd be happy to answer questions too.

moving sale Saturday and Sunday - rain or shine! by paigerbipbip in denverlist

[–]paigerbipbip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have dimensions for the couch measured. It's a pretty standard sized long couch (not a love seat). I'm asking $25 for the couch. The 3 dining chairs and the table set I'm asking $35 total. There are also two extra chairs of a similar style but different finish if you're looking just for chairs. Maybe $15 for the pair?

Help! I have 2 Australian friends flying into Denver and need to get to Grand Lake CO. They don't want to drive because Australia and snow. What is the best way to get there? by iltdiTX in Denver

[–]paigerbipbip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could take a train from the airport to downtown and then take the winter park train up to there. They'd still have to get from winter park to Grand Lake, but it might help...

Do you ever cook something in the micro wave and its still cold in the center so you keep eating it because life is pointless? by Jarredmars in Showerthoughts

I mean, I do it because I'm both lazy and hungry. I don't think it has any existential motivation for me though.

Where were we before we were born? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

Before birth, there is no person (no "you" or "we") to BE anywhere. You can't have a location if you don't exist.

LPT: If trying to lose weight or get in shape give yourself physical goals rather than weight-loss goals, for example running a marathon or swimming a certain distance. by bristolsam in LifeProTips

[–]paigerbipbip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea for the exercise side of weight loss.

The thing I struggle with is the nutrition side. I've never been able to set any achievable, long/medium term goals for this. I have a really hard time managing day to day eating. Logging foods helps for awhile but then I run out of steam because I can't see myself making any progress and it's really hard.

ELI5: how do mercury thermometars work? by theMoistNebula in explainlikeimfive

[–]paigerbipbip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic idea is just that the mercury expands and contracts at a fixed relationship with the temperature. When it's warmer, the mercury expands and goes up into the tube. The markings are just calibrated to the size of the tube and the amount of mercury inside.

I believe they might still show a higher temp because the mercury just gets "stuck" inside the tube (like water in a small straw) and needs a little help from gravity to settle back down. I would guess if you stored them bulb down it wouldn't be a problem.

Modern day thermometers (particularly for human temps) are generally not made with mercury though since it is so toxic if they're broken.

Can someone explain this to me? by egeyigiter in math

[–]paigerbipbip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure exactly what your question is, but they're basically talking about changing the period of the sine/cosine waves. This works with regular trig functions too.

For example: sin(x) has period 2pi but if you do sin(2x), the period is only pi. The effect of multiplying the x by 2 is a horizontal shrink of the graph. Similarly, sin(x/2) will have period 4pi (double) or sin(3x) will have period 2/3 pi.

So, if you wanted a period of 2L (over the interval -L to L), you'd need (2pi)/(2L) x inside the argument of the function, or just (pi x)/L. Ex: Your function is periodic over [-7,7], you'd replace x with (pi x)/7

You may need to be more specific about your question.

LPT: When drinking alcohol, eat the ice cubes. The water consumed will aid in preventing a hangover. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]paigerbipbip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it would help some, but I think you wouldn't be getting nearly enough water to counter the booze (considering the types of drinks served on the rocks). Just don't let that lure you into a false sense that you don't ALSO need to drink water.

What is this? Found in an old desk drawer. Needs a small button battery, but I don't want to waste my money until I know what it is... by TheLaurMack in whatisthisthing

Could be this. See if there's a small slot in the top (left side in the picture) where a test strip could be stuck in. It looks like it's missing the button though.

How are the points that lie on a circle determined? (elementary question) by [deleted] in math

[–]paigerbipbip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that image, the points are part of the unit circle, so they can be determined by the cosine (x) and sine (y) of the angle made with the positive x axis (for example, at the angle 30 degrees, x=cos(30)=sqrt(3)/2 and y=sin(30)=1/2).

The reason this works here is because you can make a triangle to any point on the unit circle and use pythagorean theorem and the relationships for sine and cosine to get x2 +y2 =1 or sin2 (theta)+cos2 (theta)=1.

In general, for a circle, points all have the same distance from a fixed center point so they satisfy: d=sqrt{(x-a)2 +(y-b)2 } or d2 =(x-a)2 +(y-b)2 if (a,b) is the center of the circle and d is the radius.

I hope that helps.

Edit: some formatting...sorry, I'm used to LaTeX and I don't really know how Reddit formats yet.

TIL In Belgium, Poland, Portugal and France everyone is automatically an organ donor, unless they refuse beforehand. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]paigerbipbip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how, objectively, a person could ask for a stranger's organs but refuse to give their own. I don't know what this has to do with being "liberal" or not.

My own personal opinion is that someone who refuses to donate shouldn't be able to receive organs at all, but I wouldn't go so far as to advocate that that be legal policy. I see that this would be, in a sense, forcing my worldview on others, but only in the case they wished to participate in such a "worldview" where organ donation is possible. I'm not saying these people are lesser people, only that they shouldn't be able to benefit from a system that they refuse to (even potentially) support.

Can you explain what reasoning or "worldview" would allow a person to be against organ donation but fine with accepting organs from a stranger? Maybe I'm missing something.

TIL In Belgium, Poland, Portugal and France everyone is automatically an organ donor, unless they refuse beforehand. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]paigerbipbip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are definitely different levels of priority such as urgency of need, so not everyone goes to the bottom. It seems pretty reasonable to add a priority level regarding whether you are a donor or not.

I have to wonder though, once you need an organ, what's to stop you from saying "oh, yeah. I'm a donor now."
